Hair-do or Hair-don’t?

April 15th, 2008 @ 12:19 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

After trying on a drop-veil in person, my debate between having my hair up or down was quickly solved. On me at least, a down-do just looked smushed and busy under the veil, whereas having my hair up gave my bridal look that “je ne se quois.”

In researching vintage options for an up-do, I came across the much maligned style from the 1950s and 60s known as a “beehive.” With modifications, of course (no Marge or Wino-do for me, thank you very much), I think a beehive-ish up-do could look very elegant.

What do you think? It’s basically an up-do with mega-volume and sass. I think I like it!

yeah… i love up-dos. big, messy up-dos. and definitely beehives, although i know that not everyone else does. they just remind me of 60s bombshells, which i think is super fabulous. p.s. thanks for the great video how-to. looks like i’ll be buying myself a “rat”:)

Definitely go for it. I’m doing a small one for my wedding hair do. Haven’t decided whether or not I’m going to pair a veil with it. If I do it’ll be a birdcage veil, but I also like the idea of rocking out a tulle headband with long “tails” hanging down the back to kind of simmulate a veil effect.

I love the look of a modern beehive. The fullness up top looks so much prettier to me than some of the slicked-back dos. The pony tail or bang “poof” as you have in your profile picture has really brought it back in I think. In dance we used to use a pair of panty hose or tights that got a run that you cut the toe off and roll down your arm or leg so that it forms a donut. That can be slipped around a pony tail or added into an updo as a rat in place of the synthetic hair. You wouldn’t see it once your own hair has been pinned in place.

I love the look of the beehive and I think you could definitely pull it off. Here’s another cute version: http://www.modelbride.com/content/005480.shtml

I love it! Just be careful to make sure that there is a bit of separation between the front/top and the back. I went to a wedding last summer where the bride tried for a beehive but ended up looking more like the bride of frankenstein…
