Seasonal Wedding Envy Disorder

April 15th, 2008 @ 4:54 pm by Mrs. Gingerbread

There are lots of perks to being a July bride, like the decreased chance of precipitation on the big day. But I would be lying if I didn’t say I don’t have moments of wishing I was getting married in a colder month. I blame this woman and her fabulous fur wrap.

kvetch.indiebride.com

I can’t imagine that this July bride could get away with wearing a faux fur wrap without looking like a ridiculously clueless Californian. So sad! But since our guests will almost all be coming from California, maybe they’ll appreciate my need desire to ward off any hint of chill that might possibly be in the air. Yeah, I’m reaching. Now that we are on the subject of seasonal envy, I also envy you Spring brides for your abundance of blossoming branches. Too pretty!

Does anyone else suffer from Seasonal Wedding Envy Disorder? What do you covet that is out of season for your big day?

peonies :( Out of season in the fall, they’re only available in early november - for $1000 for a case of questionable quality blooms. :(

Ashley says:

I would love to have an outdoor wedding period. But living in Arkansas where the seasons and weather is almost totally unpredictable in September, I will stick to the church wedding, plus it makes FMIL happy.

I would have loved, loved, loved a fall wedding as it’s my favorite season. But Mr. Jasmine said that it would be wrong to have a wedding during football season!

Sometimes I wish we were doing it in the winter! While outdoor June weddings are great, there is always still the possibility of rain, or sweltering hot weather, or a number of icky factors…I could never imagine having a late spring wedding indoors, but sometimes I wish we would have picked an indoor venue in winter, just so everything is more easily controlled!

JustJen says:

I would have loved to have my wedding when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom! But alas, our wedding is in the winter.

Miss Dahlia says:

Call me crazy, but I covet either changing leaves or snow. I’m a cold weather person, so we settled for the coolest of the months in my summer break from school- May.

7.
BRS says:

We had our wedding in August in Vermont, and, while it was pretty perfect, I sometimes have dreams of a snowy winter wedding with evergreen everywhere. My godfather even had a horse drawn sleigh. Oh well.

Winter was my secret crush.

quickbrownfox says:

winter/spring would be a perfect time of the year for us. i love the tulip and by summer it’s our of season :( we have to get married in the summer because it’s holiday for our brothers out of the country.

Linzerella says:

My wedding is in October … and I’m jealous of:

Peonies, warmer weather, the absense of a threatening winter storm, green mums, and an overally lovely fresh spring palette!

mlindsey says:

I would have loved a winter wedding, and originally it was in December, but we had to change it. I never told anyone, but I have always loved the idea of wearing a fur wrap w/ a wedding gown.

I am loving your answers! We picked the summer since we figured we’d have a better turn out for our “destination wedding” that way. I have four nieces and nephews from my sister and couldn’t see asking them to travel all this way and spend thousands in airfare when the kids have to get back to school on Monday.

@Miss Jasmine: Haha! That’s great!

@Miss Dahlia: I hear you on the cold weather. I think it’s much more romantic. I have fond memories of walking around in the cold with my hand in Miss GB 2.0’s coat pocket.

@BRS: Ooh, a horse drawn sleigh. I am adding that to my fantasy winter wedding!

@Miss Shortcake: I wanted peonies too!

endb says:

I covet fall weddings! September, especially. Thought I have grown to love some of the perks of a June wedding — namely, peonies and not having to contend with college football season — I still feel like a fall bride at heart.

Natalie says:

My wedding was in October and I was jealous of winter (snow) brides, spring brides for all the flowers in season and summer brides for the heat, bright colors and long amount of daylight.

mhb says:

We both love cold weather, but because of various peoples’ schedules we had a wedding on one of the hottest days of the year in mid-July (it was 99 degrees on our wedding day - NO outside pictures). If schedules hadn’t mattered, I would have gone for a February wedding and prayed for pretty snow.

Fun post!

16.
jmb says:

Snow. Even though we’re getting married in December, it’s in Florida and unless there’s some strange enviromental glitch, we aren’t having a white wedding.

17.
Jasmine says:

Definitely did not covet the rain on the morning of my early March wedding (also in Vancouver, BC!). But the sun came out around noon and it was the perfect early spring day.

18.
Miss Albany says:

I’m so glad someone put a name to my problem! I have so much season envy! I’m getting married in October and I’m very happy with that decision but I dream of wedding in the other seasons. I wish I could have a spring wedding with pink and green and tulips, a summer wedding outside that’s green and white, and a winter wedding where the favors are Christmas tree ornaments (which is meaninful because I collect them). Even if it doesn’t sound it, I really am happy to be an autumn bride. :)

tara says:

i most definitely have envy for spring… the flowering branches, tulips, peonies, rananculus- big sigh. spring is so unpredictable in Chicago though…

Miss Gingerbread says:

@tara: i love all those flowers that you just mentioned. if i had to plan my wedding based only on flower availability, i would definitely go with spring!

Miss Tiramisu says:

What a fun question. I really want to do a hot chocolate bar… peppermint stirrers, bailey’s, fresh whipped cream… yumm :)

22.
Brown says:

Miss Gingerbread, if you have your heart set on a fur wrap, please do not rule it out for an outdoor July wedding in the Pacific Northwest. It would certainly give your wedding that sort of Hudson’s Bay aura. ;)

Based on the summer weather we had last year, a fur wrap would be perfect. In fact, last summer I ran into a bride at an estate sale in Tacoma who was snapping up a luscious mink stole (for $35!) and she swore she would be wearing it to her wedding in August.

I’m sure she did, too.

Miss Gingerbread says:

@Brown: Thank you! Maybe I’ll do it after all. I just needed a little nudge in the direction of the faux fur :)

@Miss Tiramisu: Ooh, great idea and Miss GB 2.0 loves hot chocolate! Mmm. Hey, maybe I’ll have my winter wedding after all since I seem to be considering sporting a faux fur wrap in July. Might as well add hot chocolate. All the Californians at our wedding will be freezing if the temp drops below 75 degrees anyway :p

24.
Stephanie says:

That picture of Spring you posted is the exact reason I am so sad to also be marrying in July! It is hard to get the timing right with those blooms though…

25.
Jessica Lynn says:

yes!! i want peonies in the WORST way and they aren’t in season. :( and mrs. anayisnin’s bio (on the knot) makes me want to get married in the winter and have a fur wrap :)

26.
Amy H. says:

With you on that fur wrap! What a gorgeous wedding that was … right down to every detail. I also loved the “ice princess” look of a winter wedding dress and long coat Claire Danes had on in a fashion mag a year or so ago — I can’t even remember what magazine! Vogue or Glamour I think. . . . I tore out the picture and promptly chucked the magazine.

We picked September for the better chance of good weather in the Bay Area weather (FI) and heirloom tomatoes and white corn (me)! Food trumps fashion for me, sadly, every time . . . .

27.
MrsJones says:

Oh how I long for peonies, but August is not peony season and the spring is not outdoor wedding season here in Vancouver. :(
To be honest, I think I envy all of the seasons, there is something I love about each and every one.

28.
chibride says:

Great post. Originally I wanted a fall wedding mainly because I’d actually be married before another birthday could roll around, but also for the foliage & smell of leaves burning. I’m really getting into the idea of spring, but it seems soooo far away (I’m talking spring of ‘09).

29.
kaymarie says:

ha. i have seasonal wedding envy disorder and area envy wedding disorder. i can’t get married in:
-spring: the weather in michigan is ultra-unpredictable this time of year. one day it’s 35 (F) and the next its 76 (F). i’m not going to try and plan a wedding around that!
-summer: we’re just too cheap to pay premium rates and fight for our date at venues, honestly.
-fall: in my boyfriend’s words: “the only way you’re getting married during fall is if you do it on a bye week, and say goodbye to any sort of honeymoon that doesn’t include going to the game that next saturday.”

so, i’ll have to make my peace with the possiblity of freezing rain and/or multiple inches of snow and below freezing temps. for a winter wedding. in michigan.

oh, i feel your pain :)

30.
Thea T. says:

N, I *am* wearing a fur wrap for our Dec wedding, but I would have loved to have a summer wedding! Alas, my crunched school/work schedule, and the fear of a sweltering New Orleans summer, just made that an impossibility. I have some serious flower envy for spring and summer brides… oh, peonies. sigh.

31.
Liana says:

I’m getting married in August in Big Sur, California, and planning to wear a faux-fur wrap if I can find one! It will definitely be cold at night, plus I’m one of those Californians that whines when it gets below 75 degrees.

32.
ladyjane says:

Oh for a beautiful fall wedding *sighs dreamily*. The beautiful leaves are an instant inspiration for everything, and I could wear a dress with sleeves without sweltering. Plus think of all the nummy food! Pumpkin pie… mmm…

Unfortunately Mr. LJ works during the school year and I will be needing to look for a new job along with him… And I’m too impatient to wait for fall :)

33.
NearlyMsSubrosa says:

I am so excited about my winter wedding in November, but if the weather’s crap (which it just might be here in England) I’ll be wishing I went for a summer date… ah well!

34.
Nattie4 says:

Peonies–basically not available in August and by far my favorite flower!

35.
kleverkira says:

I’m jealous of fall brides. With my country/rustic theme, it seems a lot of the things that would fit are autumn-themed, and I’m getting married in June!

Miss Peacock says:

Like quite a few others, I am very sad that I won’t be able to have peonies. I am back to being happy that I chose September, but our long engagement has caused me to fantasize about EVERY other day/month/season before September. I might have liked a wedding in the fall, but like Mr. Jasmine, Mr. Peacock thinks its rude to invite people to a wedding when football is on. We took our engagement pics in the leaves to make up for it :)

37.
GetMarried4Less says:

my wedding day coincides with a major local college game….

SCREW football!

(insert manical laughter)

seriously, i chose November bc our anniversary will forever kickoff the holiday season which for me is the perfect time of the year. family, the holidays, my b-day and now my wedding anniversary will kick it all off.

i’m sooo thrilled with it!

i don’t like being hot, and we both have terrible allergies so Fall worked best for us.

I do envy the flower power of the spring and summer. I know my selection will be more limited especially since I am only considering seasonal flowers but there has to be a tradeoff somewhere, no?

38.
Liesal says:

I’m choosing to get married in September. The month works well because I’ll have just graduated and then we can get settled into an “adult” routine (yes we’re doing it slightly backwards, but that’s just how we are :D). But, I really with we were going to have a spring wedding. I too LOVE peonies, tulips, and lilacs and wish they could play apart in my wedding, but alas, I will have to settle for carnations.

39.
Rachel says:

We’re getting married in November, which I’m really really happy with.
There’s NO WAY we were going to get married in the summer here in Texas - no way. Too hot, even indoors.
Spring would have been too short of an engagement for us - we needed to save the money!
Winter would have been okay, but really I didn’t want to wait!! December would have been fun, but we chose November because the weather should be beautiful.

I didn’t really want peonies, so there’s not much envy there, but in general I think Spring and Summer weddings have more floral and decorating options.

40.
jnicholea says:

I’m with Miss Shortcake. I would almost change my wedding date to have peonies.

41.
Mrs Popcorn says:

oh, gosh, yes. We just wanted to get married as soon as we could, with reasonable breathing room for family between our wedding and my cousins. she was engaged first, so obviously, I felt she ought to choose first. I wasn’t that attached to precisely when it happened, but it was slightly realising that all the flowers I like are really spring-y, and I had no idea what flowers to pick for an August wedding.
