Hair Accessories On The Brain

April 16th, 2008 @ 3:26 pm by Mrs. Hummingbird

(Or more correctly, the head).

For a while now, I’ve been thinking about what the heck I want to do head accessory wise for the wedding. I’ve totally reached that point in planning where I do not relish having to make any more wedding decisions, so even though it is not a difficult thing, I am having a little bit of a hard time deciding what I want.

I know there is the traditional veil and I’ve seen many a beautiful one on this site (including two of my favourites Mrs. Snowpea’s and Mrs. Petunia’s - love them!), but I don’t think I could go that route. My dress has a lace overlay already and having to personally deal with all that tulle I think would kind of make me feel like, well . . .

What I’ve been thinking lately is some sort of colourful silk hair accessory like a flower to spice up my short locks but I’m still uncertain about the whats and where froms so I wanted to ask the hive for help.

(A picture that really got me thinking about doing the floral hair accessory.
I’m not a huge fan of the colour, but I love how fresh and summery it looks.)

Some details:

1. I don’t know what colour to go for. My dress is set to be a little bit off white and the MOH/BL dresses are such an unusual shade of blue-green, that trying to work off that colour scheme would be hard.

(A picture from when we bought all of the dress fabric.
You can kind of see the MOH/BL dress fabric on the table there,
but it seriously looks different in every light.)

2. I don’t want anything too big. A lot of sites offer flowers that are like 5 or 6 inches across and I worry that something that big would look a little weird and out of place (and also remind me too much of the brain slugs on Futurama).

3. I don’t have a lot of time and I have to be able to have it ship to me here in Canada in the next month so I can hopefully use it for my hair trial.

The clock is ticking on this one, so I turn to our lovely Weddingbee readers for help. Do any of you have recommendations for hair accessories like this? What colour, what style and what make should I buy? Suggest away!

Have you given any thought to a cage veil?
My dress is all lace and that is the route that I am going.

As far as a flower in your hair (which I think can be so pretty and chic), why not pick a color from you bouquet? Also, a dirty little secret is that the silk flower pins and combs are extremely easy and inexpensive to make. Run over to your nearest supplier of silk flowers (most craft stores will have them - Michaels is a good place if there is one near you; there are also many online) and pick up something you like. You can attach it to a comb or pin in many ways (hot glue, stitches, wire, etc). It may it easier for you to play around with size and color.

I agree that silk flowers would be a good option. Even small rhinestone hair pins could be really pretty. This website has some great options - http://www.haircomesthebride.com

Good luck!

Few things:

1.) I kind of love you for that Futurama reference. Seriously. :-)

2.) If it would look good against your skin tone, what about a contrasting color to the one you picked for your BM’s? Or a complementary color, like a charteruse (sp) or violet?

3.) Go to the library or to the bargain section at a big bookstore, and grab a gardener’s encyclopedia–a great source of inspiration for all kinds of flowers and colors…

4.) Google “real silk flowers” and see what comes up near you, and try to find a supplier with the largest selection possible. You may be able to find what you want already wired–you may just have to arrange it the way you want it with some creative bending and clipping you can attach the flower(s) to a clip, pin or barrette.

Good luck!

I just tracked a bunch down at Claire’s Accesories [if that's anywhere near you].

Otherwise, I would make a silk flower clip if I were you.

I know you said you wanted colorful, but I really think white flowers would be a beautiful contrast with your dark brown hair. I have dark hair also and was inspired by this image

There are three gardenias in her hair, so maybe just one for you

I thought at first that I wanted to have fresh orchids in my hair, but am going for a crystal flower pin instead: http://www.princessbridetiaras.com/newsite/pbt_products/N5000R.shtml

The quality is really amazing, and it might be something different that you might be looking for? The pin is like a broach pin, but you could fasten it to your hair with bobby pins.

an Excited bride.

I’m a huge proponent of the hair flower, and surprisingly they are all very expensive, but here are 2 affordable options:

Hair comes the Bride - has a beautiful magnolia for $25.

Also, my florist said that cymbidium orchids (which come in variety of colors) hold up really well and have an amazing smell.

Great thread! I am searching for hair accessories as well - and I love how these sites show the jewelry in the hair so you can get a sense for how big they are….

Here is one more - I ordered one or two small things to see what the quality was like:

I had copied the original link to the “seasonal collection”, but they also have a “bridal collection”…so pretty! I may rethink my fresh gardenia choice!

Oooh…I’m intrigued by the brain slug. I’m such a futurama fan - why didn’t I think of it? Is there anywhere in Toronto that we can find such a fab accessory? ;)

It IS super easy to make something yourself with good quality silk flowers. Allison and I made bonnets for her graduation fashion show and I made the veil and slippers for my own wedding (wedding #1). It really wouldn’t be very hard or time consuming and, if done with the right atmosphere, it could be fun. (I know hard to believe that anything to do with this could be).

I’ve found fabulous hair ornaments at http://www.andreasbeau.com, which has an awesome collection of headbands, clips and more made from beautiful trims and flowers I’ve never seen anywhere else. Great for flower girls and bridesmaids too.
