About Mrs. Shortcake

Mr. Shortcake was not naturally gifted with the dancing gene. Going out to nightclubs almost guaranteed an appearance of ‘The Crab’ (envision the grumpy crustaceans from the end of Finding Nemo) and some stellar shuffling.

On the other hand, I and my sisters were born to dance. We live to dance. I’ve taken dance lessons off and on throughout my life (ballet, jazz, modern, jive, ballroom), so I feel completely at home on any dance floor, and am often the first (or only) one on it (Exhibit A: My cousin’s wedding last summer, and me and my aunt bopping to the Shirelles, starting a retro-dance revolution!)

Putting Mr Shortcake and me together on the same dance floor? That usually resulted in:

A) The Crab
B) Mortified looks from me
C) Some awkward bumping into each other
D) A hasty retreat back to our table

It came as no shock to Mr. Shortcake then, when I suggested that we take dancing lessons together before the wedding. It was a huge shock to me, however, when Mr. Shortcake willing agreed. Without a fuss.

Woot! Woot!

Are you or your significant other a good dancer?

My fiance does not dance at ALL! and i mean not even a little. So bad that for his sister’s wedding, he left her on the dancefloor by herself for the father/daughter dance. ( Their dad is not around so he was taking his place) He is so embarrased at the tought of everyone watching him dance! I too was surprised when i suggested we take lessons together and he agreed!

By the way, he used to “break-dance” when he was in high school so i totally dont understand why he hates it now.

Neither of us were spectacular dancers, but we’ve been taking ballroom lessons since September and they are a lot of fun! Fortunately, my fiance has an excellent sense of rhythm and a fair amount of coordination, so he makes a good lead. I try to be a good follow, but it’s difficult to break habits you learned back in highschool to back-lead the poor confused males who had no idea what they were doing.
Good luck with your lessons! Are you taking any particular type of dance?

Funny that this should come up! FI and I are BOTH very untalented at dancing….

FMIL and FFIL gifted us with a portion of the amount we needed for dance lessons, and we’re off to our second lesson tonight.

We chose “Crazy little thing called love,” by Queen, and are learning a swing dance. FI picked up a LOT quicker than I thought he would, and is actually better than I am!

He really dreaded the lessons, but after the first one said that it was (gasp!) FUN!

Hopefully we will WOW our guests… OR, at least be able to dance for the first time as man and wife without being too clumsy!

Good luck.

I think we are going to try to do the same thing. He always wants us to dance together but I feel kind of uncomfortable just doing the 9th grade hug and sway. I don’t mind making a spectacle of myself so I hope that we can do something spectacular at our wedding.

I can’t quite picture The Crab. Can anyone enlighten me? My FI does The Wiggle, which I find equally mortifying.

My fiance is also a terrible dancer. I’m pretty decent since I play instruments and have a sense of rhythm… my poor guy dances (sorry if this offends anyone) like a white guy (which he is). We’re just going to do the “high-school-at-arms-length” slow dancing for our first dance.

My fiance is an awesome ballroom dancer. Come to think of it, a lot of my friends and several of my family members are too. It’s sorta funny to see any of us out at a place where dancing might occur. :-)

In keeping with the crab theme, that Robbie Williams cover of “Beyond the Sea” (it plays over the credits of Finding Nemo) could be a great first dance song. Slow enough for some close dancing, but swingy enough that you’re not just turning in circles.

My fiance and I saw “Take the Lead” last year and all I heard for the next two weeks was “I wanna dance like THAT!” Of course, his enthusiasm has waned since then… I’m currently trying to convince him that since we’re not having any other dancing at our wedding, it would be super nifty to do a goofy dance. Not going so well. :)

I’ve always taken a lot of dance classes too, but it’s made me rely on specific steps and a routine to follow in order to feel confident. Left to my own devices as is the case in most social dancing and I’m so self conscious and uncomfortable. FI isn’t a particularly good dance but he loves it and gets his feelings hurt when I hurry off the floor after one song. We’ve been taking ballroom classes together which has been really fun and we can identify the “right step” to do to a song rather than just sorta shuffling and wiggling.

oh heavens no!

i have a bit more rhythm than he does, but when we are dancing together it just seems awkward…….

he is open to dance classes but since we currently are sooo far apart, it wont be possible.

i have no idea what we will do for our first dance. though i definitely plan to have one…..

i pray it wont be as embarrassing as i think it might be….

I have a couple of left feet, but my husband is a very good dancer and a strong partner. He has this ability to make me look much better than I actually am. Reason #2,673 why I love him. ;)

nooo!!! and I have still yet to take dance lessons, and my wedding is less than two months away! I can’t dance. It started in the 6th grade. I was happily boogie-ing away carefree with friends at a school dance, when THE boy…the boy who starred in most of my dreams at that age, the boy who caused the entire male gender to become un-yuck, the boy who opened the door to candy hearts and kleenex…stood behind me to mimic and mock my previously-unknown horrid dancing ability to his friends. Since then, I have yet to break it down on a dance floor at any formal or prom I’ve ever been to from junior high through college. Call me Harry Potter at the Yule Ball! Shame!

My fiance, however, born to be the center of the dance floor. I have a lot of work to do.

I’m an ok dancer, but my fiancee is .. not. I’ll leave it at that. He’s so wonderful though - he’s taking dance lessons with me when he gets home, so we both don’t look dorky. :)

I guess my fiance and I are lucky — we are big-time swing dancers. Actually it is how we met. But now everyone we know is expecting something spectacular at the wedding, and it’s making me a little nervous because I have picked out a very large and poufy wedding dress. I adore my dress, but how am I going to move gracefully when I’ve got 10 pounds of silk and petticoats floating around me?

My fiance and I also met through dance - argentine tango. On the plus side, fewer worries about the first dance. That said, I’m going to have to get another dress for that dance. The wedding dress must way 10-15 pounds, so that’s not an option. The good news is that by making a dress change, more people will get to see my fabulous hot pink shoes!

Miss Shortcake - don’t stress too much. Take lessons, have some fun and get into the groove!
