DIY Luggage Tags?

April 17th, 2008 @ 1:30 pm by Mrs. Gingerbread

Originally, I said “no wedding favours!” I think this was partially an attempt to manage my anxiety about the 40 billion wedding details, like “here’s one we can cut out.” However, since most of our guests will be traveling to our wedding via airplane, I thought that luggage tags could serve as a cool wedding favour/place card holder.

This one, from Beau-coup is classic, but at $7.95 a piece, it’s a little rich for my blood.

I’ve googled around trying to find cheaper options, but have not been happy with what I’ve seen. I’ve also looked at luggage stores and dollar stores. This is what I usually find.

from target.com

Target also has these at 3 for $9.99, which might work.

I decided to look into making my own using some photos of Vancouver. Shutterfly lets you make luggage tags with your own photos, but they are still almost $8 a pop.
Then I randomly stumbled upon some cruise vacation forums that talked about making luggage tags out of Shrinky Dinks. As a kid, I never saw the appeal of shrinking stuff in the oven, but as a bride-to-be, I am kind of liking this concept.

Have any of you used Shrinky Dinks? Do you think this could actually work? Any other ideas for making your own luggage tags?

I have no experience with shrinking things in my oven either, but the site I’m getting my favour containers from has some cheaper options:

I made luggage tags for all of our guests. I printed them on cardstock with their addresses on one side, and laminated them in business card sized self laminating sheets (Dollarama 10/$1). I punched a hole with a hole punch and tied on some coordinating ribbon to attach it to the luggage.
You can see pics on my blog:

We ordered leather luggage tags in bulk from ebay for around $1 each. Then we order free busines cards from Vistaprint to insert in them. We used these for our save the dates, but you could do they same thing for favors or placecards.

@Melissa: I’m kind of liking the ones with an airplane on them and I am definitely liking the price more than for the ones I’d been finding on my own. Thanks!

@knudsonwedding: Oh, those are really, really cute!

I made luggage tags for my save the dates. I found clear ones on ebay and made inserts and cards to attach them to. They were a huge hit with everyone.

Shrinky Dink luggage tags would be fun, but can you write on them after they are made???

Miss Gingerbread, you are getting me into trouble in wanting to add another project to my list :-) Now I want to make luggage tags for the OOT bags. I found a helpful tutorial here http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cr_clothing/article/0,,diy_13751_3487936,00.html
and here is a link to the template one bride used with the Oriental Trading clean luggage tags http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t13660

Sorry the 1st link was just one that was for embellishing a tag. The one I meant to post was the one featured on Style Me Pretty that just use cardstock http://www.stylemepretty.com/2007/12/diy-entries-2.html Can you tell I have too many links to luggage tags right now.

Jessica Jones of How about Orange (http://howaboutorange.blogspot.com) has done some work recently with shrinky-dinks; I think she did keychains. Her blog posts on the subject should be a good starting point.

hmm… don’t give up on shuttefly (and also check kodakgallery.com & snapfish) because they often have 25% off sales!

I did some stuff with shrinky-dinks years ago. Its pretty cool to watch them shrink. They do shrink a lot from the original size, and sometimes they don’t shrink uniformly. The colors that you put on there end up a lot darker because it gets condensed down.

Why don’t you try promotionalproducts.net? I’ve ordered from them before and they were pretty helpful.

Here’s the link I found for luggage accessories: http://63.150.179.36/product_search.cfm?sitenumber=BES033&sid=4241650&cid=4269248

I don’t think that shrinky dinks would be the way to do. Like some else said they don’t shrink uniformly and they don’t always lay flat either. The other thing is they are quite brittle so there is a good chance they would break with rough handling at the airport.

I went with the luggage tags for our save-the-date.
I also originally found the tags Miss Gingerbread had, but decided they were too expensive and possibly too heavy, postage-wise to mail.
I found these really cute luggage tags at Now and Forever (sorry the link is kinda long!): http://www.now-and-forever.com/order/CasPage1B.cfm?sEnsembleCode=CasEns05020&page=1&strcontinue=yes&strsearch=no&format=STDCasEnsNF.
I thought they fit our theme since we’re doing a destination wedding.

Wow, great suggestions everyone! You rock :)

@Claudia: What fantastic save-the-dates!

@bridalmonkey: Those a really cool! I wonder where I can find those kinds of plastic tag holders that you don’t have to laminate closed. I am on the hunt!

20.
Claudia says:

@Miss Gingerbread: The plastic came with the card, as well as they tie-thingy. My mom and I put them together in less than an hour (we only ordered 50 or so though)

One of the Hawaii brides on the knot DIY’s her luggage tags using ID holders from Office Depot. Super cost effective and super cute! Her knottie name is Married2MrWright. I believe she has instructions in her bio. Definitely worth checking out!
