About Mrs. Shortcake

Our first latin dance lesson, taught by a stern young woman from the Old Country, was definitely an intimidating experience for Mr. Shortcake.

” No! NO! You will put your hands like dese! No! Like DESE!”

“Why are you laughing? I do not like the laughing and the joking!”

Wonderful teacher, but Mr. Shortcake The Beginner was terrified. (”No I wasn’t”)

At the same time (but on different days) we were taking lindy hop lessons from a funny young man, Suneil, who has offered to give us private lessons in east coast swing and the hustle (ballroom dance, not line) throughout the summer.

By the time our wedding rolls around, we’ll have taken over seven months of lessons. Mr. Shortcake has already improved tenfold (and has temporarily retired his signature marine moves :) ), and we can dance together, not only without stepping on each other - but really well!

By the the time our wedding rolls around, we will be at least this good, if not better. WOOT!

Anyway, long story cut short, we need help narrowing down our four first dance song choices before our private lessons start next month.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

A) Open up this youtube video, then mute it.

B) Play that video in loops while listening to the different songs. Each song has the proper tempo for east coast swing, so this video is perfect for envisioning the dance - stop and start as needed to the tempo matches.

C) Choose for us!JmxPTE

ABOUT THE CHOICES:

1) Everything - Michael Bublé: Sweet song, smooth vocal stylings, and the lyrics are so romantic!

2) You’re My Number One - S Club 7: In the summer of some year a long time ago, in two very different places, Mr. Shortcake and I both watched the S Club 7 show compulsively with our siblings, bobbing our heads along with the confectionery beat of this song. This was Mr. Shortcake’s suggestion! No joke!

CONS: Would have to listen to this song, over and over, might fall into a peppy-induced coma. Might not.

3) Ain’t That A Kick In The Head - Dean Martin:My head keeps spinning, I go to bed and keep grinning, if this is just the beginning, my life is going to be bee-ooo-tiful!” Nuff said. CONS: Violent chorus.

4) It Had To Be You - Harry Conick Jr: very sweet lyrics, loved this song ever since I was in junior high!

Come on, gumshoes, we’re counting on you!

I vote for #1 - “Everything” by Michael Buble. I think it’s such a romantic (yet fun!) song and it would be a great modern twist on the east coast swing :)

StephSept2808 says:

I second Michael Buble’s “Everything”… It’s my first dance song too, I am so excited to dance to it.
He wrote that song for his girlfriend, Emily Blunt.

Me too! Buble! That’s what we plan on using too!! I actually thought I was the only one.. :o)

JustChicEvents says:

I would say the upbeat feel of #2 fits the best with upbeat feel of the East Coast Swing…..that song immediately did get stuck in my head!!

I would say #1 or #3. The music seems to fit with the dance moves the best. Good luck.

Buble.

I love Everything, but it doesn’t seem peppy enough for the East Coast Swing. It is romantic, but I have to vote for #2 as well! Its fun and upbeat!

I love the Buble song too but i feel it is so overpopulated nowadays. I think you should find something more special and unique for your special dance that you’re working so hard for =) I would go for #2

futuremrs.taj says:

I’d go with #2, 3, or 4 - 3 works the best musically, but 2 and 4 aren’t bad either. I thought the dance was too showy for the intimate atmosphere of #1.

buble has my vote!

missbean says:

I like number 3 the best - it seems to be the most “swing-y”. It’s also quite humourous. If you wanted to do a bit more toned down swing, I’d choose number 4.

Ashley Lauran says:

I love the last two with your dance. Ain’t That a Kick in the Head is my personal favorite, because your choreography seems to go right along with it… but I think they’re all great!!!

I vote for #1. (It was my first dance song too!)

I love Everything and I also love It Had to be You. Our DJ is playing Ain’t That a Kick in the Head when we cut the cake……love that song too!

my vote is for buble! love him! btw, what a great idea for a first dance.

ErinSea says:

Oh I totally like number 2. I hadn’t even heard it before, but I like that it has history with both of you and it totally jives with the video. Also, as is evident from the other comments, the other songs have been used in many other weddings, this one would be just yours.

Marisa says:

I will do a little blurb on all of them

Everything - sweet, romantic and although a little slow, I think you could work with it

You’re My Number One - while this is a great tempo it feels too Britney Spears for a first song. Somehow I imagine you in spandex doing a choreographed pop routine.

Kick in the Head - I love this song, but ultimately it reminds me too much of an intro to some movie about New York and not so much of a wedding.

It Had to be You - There was just too much of an intro and it just didn’t appeal enough.

All that said I vote Buble!

I like #2. I think it fits best with East Coast swing. I don’t think it’s too peppy. In fact, I’d be worried that the other ones aren’t peppy enough for East Coast swing.

Great idea for helping us visualize the music with the dance style. It’s amazing how well each song fit with the tempo of the youtube video… I didn’t even have to adjust the syncing very much (with pause and play) to get the timing to be right on.

louisvillegirl says:

#1 I love the song, singer and message :)

20.
Lee says:

I vote #1. And plus, Everything is a fast song, which makes it more fun to dance, compared to, say, #4.

lauradee says:

I love #1. That will be our song as well, and I was a little at a loss as to how we’d dance to it–not exactly a waltz-friendly dance. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to get some lessons and experiment with different dance styles.

Incidentally, to any of you who also had Everything as your first song, how did you end up dancing to it?

Miss Teacup says:

I love the vintage feel of #3 & #4

everything!

Miss Lovebug says:

DEAN MARTIN! DEAN MARTIN!

25.
MsNessa says:

How come you can’t make a music medley out of them and dance to all 4? Personally, my favorite is “It Had to Be You”, but we’re dancing to “Amazed” by Lonestar at our wedding.

26.
Emilie says:

Totally #3! 1 and 4 are lovely songs, but they don’t really match with the energy of swing dancing, and 3 is too sugary.

28.
LB says:

BUBLE!

29.
Beth says:

Harry Connick!

30.
Cari says:

#3 or #4… I love those types of songs and they go great with the swing dancing!

31.
MissyJenn says:

oOOOOOOOOOO! Michael Buble-definitely, I recently downloaded that song, “Everything” on my MP3 player..LOVE IT! Harry Connick, Jr’s “It had to be you” isn’t that bad either but I would go with “Everything”

32.
Birdy says:

Finally my dance choreographer background gets to pay off on the ‘bee! :) While i LOVE the Buble song, the tempo is wonky. It sounds fast when you listen to the lyrics, but music-wise it’s just a bit too slow for East Coast swing. The S Club 7 song is a little too poppy and I think guests would be confused about why you chose it because they wouldn’t have that insight into your lives. Dino is the best fit for the choreography– especially those kicks in the middle! Perfect! I love HCJ, too– isn’t “It Had to be You” in When Harry Met Sally?

Anyway, great choices all around but #3 is my favorite. Cute, classic and a light touch I think your guests will love.

Ivana says:

i love #1 :) romantic yet fun.

34.
Melissa says:

I vote Dean Martin. I like the Michael Buble song, but I don’t think it fits the style of dance.

35.
trish says:

OMG! I’m so glad you guys are learning lindy hop! I’ve been dancing lindy hop for almost 10 years now…such a fun dance.

As someone who also does east coast swing, I would do Ain’t That a Kick in the Head (#1 pick) or Everything (#2 pick).

I wish I could see your guys’ first dance!

36.
SisterShortcake says:

Wow!!!
This voting is really going in all directions! I can’t choose, either..
I lurve Michael Buble, but I also lurve the idea of you two dancing to S Club - and then I come out for my solo,…right? RIGHT?!

37.
Michelle says:

Love the Buble, but S Club 7 and Dean Martin fit the dance moves best. Buble looks like you are nervous and going a touch too fast for a slower tempoed song. Major congrats on not just going blah middle school two step for the dance!
