About Mrs. Peacock

I’m A Sucker

April 17th, 2008 @ 8:31 am by Mrs. Peacock

I bought my rehearsal dinner dress yesterday. Until hitting “add to cart,” I hadn’t really thought about what I would wear to that particular event. After we booked the location a year ago, I kinda stopped thinking about the rehearsal dinner altogether.

Then I saw a cute white dress on one of the one million wedding blogs that I read and I started thinking that it might be fun to wear white for the RD. I headed over the Anthropologie, which is my go-to place for… almost anything, and the first white dress that I saw was this one.

The fabric looks so nice and light. I love all the little details, it’s white and they had it in my size. What really inspired me to hit “add to cart,” however, was the name of the dress- La Jolla. La Jolla, California is where Mr. Peacock proposed. I have been known to impulse buy things based on their name and it has usually served me well. I have purchased shoes (awesome vintage black and white polka dot peep toes), lipstick and a handbag all because we shared a first name. I had been pretty good about laying off the impulse buys thus far for wedding purchases, but I’m a sucker for a good name.

Anyone else been guilty of the wedding impulse buy?

oh yeah! mine was a vintage 50’s party in silver for the RD….i wasn’t going to buy it, i wasn’t sure how much i liked it, then i bought fantastic peeptoed slingbacks and they cried out “buy the dress!!” so back to ebay i went and outbid someone else for it.

and then there were the tags from etsy that i had to have, with only the vaguest idea of what to do with them….

I do this too! There was a way overpriced but very beautiful dress in the J Crew catalog that I just had to have because it was named Erin like me! I resisted the urge, but was really attracted to some wedding jewelry named Erin as well. I think companies know what they’re doing when they name stuff, but like a wine label, if the name appeals to you, it’s likely that the product will too since they try to pick something that matches.

It’s not an impulse buy if it demonstrates something significant to you. :-P

Anthropologie is evil with their ridiculously cute but expensive things! I just bought a skirt from there for the honeymoon that was more than I normally spend, but it perfectly evokes the mid-20th-century American expat look that I’m planning on rocking when in Italy (and honestly, it’s been something I’ve been searching for for years).

Ha ha…..so if you bought this dress does that mean i get to buy the two dresses from there that are in my basket already for two weeks now….they just went on sale yesterday…..

one will be for rehearsal dinner and the other will make a great shower/brunch dress.

for some reason i feel much better that you bought this and it seems right that i get to know….especially since they are on sale.

Thanks!

Oh yeah. I bought a dress that I intended to wear for the rehearsal dinner, then realized it was too dressy. I despaired of ever wearing it (when does one wear a vintage-y ivory embroidered chiffon dress?), but got to wear it at a post-wedding reception party that my husband’s mom threw for us in her hometown, since not everyone there was able to travel to our wedding!

I think the wedding industry is based on the impulse buy. I have a whole gathering of items to prove it, including an ivory silk clutch I will likely never use again and 200 water bottle labels that tied the water into our theme “perfectly”.Sigh. I will be excited when the wedding is over and I can redirect my impulse spending elsewhere:)

I have bought *so* many things because of the name! Not just if they have the same name as me, but any link I find! But then, any excuse to spend will do me :)

Our first wedding purchase was an impulse buy. We were at Hallmark and saw a white figurine of an intertwined couple. It seemed so wedding that I had to have it. I thought for sure we’d use it….but we didn’t. I still haven’t figured out what to do with the thing.

Our rehearsal is pretty casual, but mysteriously I have a whole box of dresses from Nordstrom to try on with the idea of wearing one to the RD. What am I thinking? No idea. But they’re so pretty…

I’m not going to be wearing a white dress at my wedding (that’s the plan, anyway), so it might be really fun to wear one for the RD!! Thanks!

Oh poop. I work within walking distance of Anthropologie (actually, it’s the ORIGINAL Anthropologie store!) and now I’m going to HAVE to go try this little pretty on. I want to wear white for my RD, too!

cute dress! funnily enough, I seem to hate everything that has my name and am usually insulted that they put my name on it. hehe. Well, unless of course it’s from Tiffany & Co. (which I was actually named after) then that’s ok. ;)

I’ve actually just purchased 5 dresses that I think I will wear for engagement pictures, rehearsal dinner, bachelorette, etc… I’m sure I will be purchasing more so I feel ya!

I am so glad that I am not alone in this :) Fortunately, the dress just arrived and I really like it!
