About Miss Pineapple

When Mr. Pineapple and I were first discussing our wedding and our priorities, his number one was food and mine was photography. I started studying photography at art school when I was in 8th grade. I had a brush with majoring in photography for college before I changed my mind at the very last minute. So began the search for a Pittsburgh photographer who could capture our wedding for all time.

My guidelines: No trendy effects, detail shots and mostly color images (black and white is lovely too, but we wanted primarily color images)

First off is Melody Farrin.

She is very traditional and has the ability to capture the little moments as well as the typical family portraits. Here are some of my favorites from her site and her blog.

I just love the look on the bride and groom’s faces in this photo. Too sweet.

Her images are clean and beautiful, but overall not quite enough of the little moments I am looking for. If you are in the Pittsburgh area and like Melody’s work definitely check out her site.

What were your top priorities when looking for a photographer?

I definitely wanted to find someone that would be able to capture those little moments - maybe it’s a glance between my new husband and I, a special moment between family members, our guests having a great time, etc. - and also a photographer that could blend in. Funny, because the photographer we ended up booking is 6′4! But I spoke with 4 of his references and they all said they didn’t even notice him during the day. Apparently he has ninja skills. AND his photography is beautiful. But the ninja skills are pretty cool.

My main priorities were having someone to photograph the entire day - getting ready, ceremony and reception and preferably have two photographers so both my women and myself and the groom and his guys could have getting ready photos taken. I also wanted someone who would take really fun photos; yeah we’ll do some of the traditional posed portraits, but I also want the photographs to reflect our personality. But my number one priority was to NOT break the bank, as so many of the photographers in my area wanted to do. Luckily I found one on the cheap, who meets my desires and then some. She’s travelling halfway across the state to do our engagement photos (since the finacee and I are still living in our apartment out where we went to school, which is 2 hours away from where the photographer lives) and she sent us a bottle of wine! That’s just classy!

I’m looking forward to parts 2 and 3 of your post. I’m a Pgh girl and I know the bride in the one photo you posted. I was so excited to see my buddy in an unexpected place!

I have a photographer lined up for our at home reception (getting married in Hawaii), but I’m looking for someone to do engagement photos as well, so I appreciate the home town reviews.

When I started thinking about my wedding I also thought I would set aside a large chunk of the budget in the photography. But then I realized there’s no way I’d hang any of the pictures in my apartment, save for maybe one in the bedroom. Instead, and this may not be the classic image you have in your head of gorgeous portraits, I’m supplanting the photography budget for the videography. My dad was actually a wedding videographer when I was growing up and the videos are what people love seeing over and over– you’ll want to see how you acted, how you sounded, how the whole day unfolded. In the end a photograph may prick at some detail of the wedding, but what’s going to be the most important when you’re 60 looking back at the wedding isn’t the detail shot of your cake, but the way your husband kissed you.
Having our weddings encapsulated like a Martha Stewart Weddings layout won’t turn out to be the best memory, probably.

I agree with Colleen above that there is something to be said about having things captured on video, my only problem with wedding videography is that it still has so far to go. Wedding photography has exploded into a completely new era over the past 10 years, but I don’t think that videography is quite there yet. It’s difficult to get a really amazing video for the same price that you can get really amazing photography. I am going to go for a photographer that takes absolutely amazing photos and then pay to have a videographer film the day without editing the footage afterwards. I can do that myself, and have control over the way things look. The quality won’t be movielike, but I wouldn’t have been able to afford a movie of the day anyways.

budget. though photography was hands down my most important element (i live for pictures) and have even been known to say “the guests can not eat but as long as i have my photographer, I am happy”. i had to find one that fit within my small, small budget.

i searched high and low to find a photographer that could tell our story in photographs since i don’t have it in the budget to have a videographer.

i found a guy who was $200 more than i budgeted, but the least expensive out of many that I had researched. so I booked him……

can’t wait for my pics!

Our top priority was a la carte options. We didn’t want a full day of coverage, just formal photos and the ceremony. I also wanted the flexibility to do my own album. BIG MISTAKE!!! While I still like our photographer’s personality and style, I realize now that it would have been much more cost effective to get a package, particularly because most album companies won’t work directly with brides so I’ll have to work through a photographer anyway. If we could do it all over again, I’d go with a “wedding” photographer and get their package.

As a wedding photographer who loves to travel, I have been fortunate to connect with a lot of friends and colleagues who also love to travel. So in a way, a but unfairly easy for me to find the photographer for our SF wedding.

I looked for someone who can see us as unique from every other wedding s/he has shot. But experienced enough to be able to get the shots and handle our large chaotic family!
