About Mrs. Shortcake

Shhhhwwiiing!

April 18th, 2008 @ 2:49 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

(Dolly Lamour)

During the wedding planning, nothing has perked Mr. Shortcake’s interest so much as what I’ll be wearing under there. He’s already seen my enormous petticoat and hoop skirt (and is baffled as to just how he’s going to be able to dance cheek-to-cheek with me…hehe), but I did let it slip that I might, just might, be wearing full-on old-fashioned garters and stockings beneath the mass of tulle.

Did you say stockings?

Shhhwwwiiingg!

Stockings and garters are such a retro pinup look, and they’re SOOOOOO sexy:

I’ve found some good sources for fully-fashioned stockings so far, at:

But I’m wondering, what if the clips ‘ping’ and my stockings fall down? There’s no way I’ll be able to fix it without having somone diving beneath my sub-tulle-ean layers to fix it, and I haven’t been able to find a clutch that fits an oxygen tank for such an occasion. :)

Has anyone worn garters and stockings before? Are there any tips or hints you can give me so as to prevent deep-dress-diving at the reception?

I wear them whenever I’m dressed up. Provided you fasten them well, and make sure to clip the garter well-enough away from the edge of the stocking that it won’t slip out, you won’t have any problem.

I looooove garters and stockings! And they’re much more comfortable than pantyhose. Ugh, like wearing a diaper.

Ha ha you are a cutie! I would definitely recommend the “garterless” type of stockings & just use the garter with them. They have some elastic or something at the top and so don’t slide down. That way, nothing to worry about and you can still use the garter! (Vicky’s sells them, not sure who else)

You could get those stockings that hold up by themselves … still have the garter clips, but then if they undo, you shouldn’t end up with your stockings around your ankles!

Alternatively, you could just save them for later on in the evening … if you get what I mean ;)

Make sure you buy a real garter belt– not one of the teeny lace ones they sell for use with the fake corsets in the lingerie stores. Do a search online for vintage style lingerie, I got mine at http://www.girdlebound.com, they’ve got a decent selection. Mine has three clips per leg– more stable than just two.

The “real” ones aren’t as pretty as the modern ones, but they’ll actually hold your stockings up! Also, make sure the garters in back are set just slightly longer than the front– when you sit down, they’ll need to stretch more!

Ok, I’m not much help but I have a story. My sister was MOH in a wedding where the bride wore a one piece thingy underneath that snapped between her legs. Well, after going to the bathroom someone had to resnap it. So my sister went deep dress diving! Sometimes you just have to do it.

I wanted to get a really sexy garter with belts, fancy bra, panties, the whole nine. However, with my dress, I will not be wearing a bra, which is very uncommon for me cause I’m a little on the big side. I have open toe shoes so no nylons. Ok, that leaves me with a free hanging garter belts and panties! Not so hot.

So I’m going the opposite route. No bra, no nylons, no panties!! I think FI will be pleasantly surprised!

I love that pinup feel that the garters induce….Spoylt is having a 50% off sale on all of their gorgeous undergarments, including some garters!!

I have worn them fairly often, and the secret is to get good stockings and good clips. Good stockings will fit well enough that they could almost stay up on their own, or have enough elastic in the tops that they will. If you want to splurge, I love

for gorgeous garter belts. etc. Agent Provocateur’s stockings are some of the best, and they won’t fall out of the clips.

candi1024 - I would say that that particular task would be above and beyond what I would be willing to do as a bridesmaid!!

I would recommend “Stay-ups” and a garter belt. I wear them any time I dress up, and I agree with Miss CherryPie Re comfort level and “like wearing a diaper”

I’ve a garter belt and some plain ‘long stockings, and i agree with whoever above said if you get ‘em right, they won’t fall down. The “stay-ups” are nicest if you have thin thighs; i am definitely curvy and don’t love the indentation the elastic makes, so i prefer regular, old-school stockings and garter.

Also second the suggestion to lengthen the garters on the backs of your legs — you’d want to do a trial run before the day, to make sure you’re comfy! I’d suggest getting two or three pairs of the actual stockings, so you can get used to the feeling (it’s a little different, although WAY more freeing, than pantyhose).

I agree with nina nina, AP stockings are the best ever. Splurge on them…you won’t regret it. Make sure you have a quality garter belt and you shouldn’t have any trouble with them coming un-clipped.

I wear them whenever I dress up, and have never had them fall down- even with non-elastic tops (though they may contribute to your peace of mind, they will also probably leave indentations when you take them off.) I love them, and won’t be surprised if you never wear pantyhose again.

As usual, great timing! I just found out last night that he ranks garter belts and stockings as THE number one sexiest thing! Guess I know what I’ll be wearing underneath! Thanks for all the great links!

Candi1024-
I’ve worn stockings with open toed shoes. It’s correct for vintage style - peep-toe shoes have been popular during eras when going without stockings would have been utterly shocking! I either get stockings with no seam at the toe or tuck the seam under my toes(definitely no reinforced toes). I also go for sheerer stockings, and wear a bright polish so it will show through the nylon.

I would ask the customer service at http://www.stockingirl.com - those women know everything there is to know. And they have a great selection, too.

I am wearing fishnets and a garter belt under my dress with the frilly full bottom black panties. I’m going for a gangster era kind of feel. I have high heeled spectator shoes and my groom is wearing spectators also. The whole wedding is black and white so it goes with the theme.
The stockings and belt is also my fiance’s biggest turn on, LOL.

i wear them all the time, i just don’t use those frilly garter belts and i usually use a 6 or 8 strap garterbelt to ensure that my seams lie straight.

All great advice from above - but just make sure you have at least one spare pair handy on the big day! Even though the chances of somebody seeing it is slim to nil - i find the “feel” of runs to be absolutely annoying!

I do not recommend the self-adhesive - or if you do, use the garter too. I have had two separate instances where my thigh high (with the elastic/self-adhesive, without a garter) just fell down to my foot. It is partially because I am tall (need a medium) but have skinny legs (a small would be better). It was so incredibly embarrassing. It was at a friends wedding, and I’m walking to greet the bride and her parents, and all of the sudden my entire thigh-high was around my ankle!!

I guess I just don’t understand why brides with long dresses feel compelled to add on another layer with hosiery. Could someone please explain that to me? I seriously do not get it.

I get that they are hot and all for the after wedding wink wink, but I guess I am just curious how many brides just drop their wedding gown at the foot of the bed and dive into love land?

I wore stay up stockings. I didn’t find garters I liked, but at least I got part of the look.
