Color Palette

April 21st, 2008 @ 11:19 am by Miss Pineapple

As you saw during my invitation process, I was all over the place as far as which colors I would like to use in the wedding. The venue ended up influencing the color palette quite a bit. I didn’t think it would be wise to take a space with tealish pinkish curtains and red carpet and add purple and yellow to the mix.

Mr. Pineapple and I also love the unique color of my engagement ring (rose gold) and wanted to somehow incorporate it into the wedding. Mr. P and I both have some Irish in our blood and since rose gold is Celtic, it holds special meaning. My primary concern was that I would not be able to find enough rose gold accents that were the same tone. So, I decided to use champagne as a base color and copper as an accent. They have a similar feel as rose gold, but are much more common. Also, rose gold is made by mixing copper with 18k gold.

Here are a couple of the details I have so far in the copper color family:

Copper has turned out to be a pretty tough color as well. Some coppers are really dark, almost a burnt umber. Other coppers like the flashing (thin sheet of copper often used for termite protection, but also great for crafting) in the photo above are really bright.

I have not exactly decided what I am going to do with the above items yet. Some of my ideas are to use the flashing to make the place cards and cover the guest book, the ribbon to cover the metal cups the tea light candles sit in and the crazy sparkly leaves inside the candles holders. (fire hazard?)

Any ideas of how I can incorporate copper on a budget? Yes, pennies are cheap - like approximately 1 cent each ;) - but also cheesy maybe?

You could probably do some neat things with copper wire - like wrapping votive holders with some copper wire and beads (yeah - hard to picture I know) or something like that?

Just an idea!

I am using copper colored metal containers for all my floral items and centerpieces. I even got small matching ones for flowers in the bathrooms, etc. I purchased them at Michaels and they were even on sale!

Search under “brass & metal containers”

Hooray for copper! I used dark teal and copper for our wedding last year and it held up really well to the other jeweltones and fall tones that we used as accents.

One thing we did for decor at the ceremony was to find affordable tin pails and spraypaint them with a dark copper paint. We filled them with fall leaves and put them at the ends of each seat row at the aisle. The idea was for the guests to throw leaves instead of rice.

Another cool thing to search for at the craft stores is the copper colored skeleton leaves (you can also order them in bulk online). I used them with my invitations and then again on the programs - the first set came from the invitation company and the extras came from Michael’s.

Michael’s also had some great card stock that was a metallic copper - not the bright and flashy tone. I ended up using some of it for thank you notes.

I can’t wait to see how your plan turns out =)

Oh! You might also want to check out tulle or chiffon in copper metallics:

I also found a rental company that had copper satin chair sashes fairly reasonably. If you’d like the contact info, let me know (I think you could do a google search on Fabulous Events to find them). We did copper and teal ones and it dressed up some fairly plain chairs…

I think copper wire would be a great thing to incorporate in your wedding. You can make little spirals or curls (kind of like the monkey-tail fiddlehead ferns florists use) and stick them in your bouquet/centerpieces. You could get copper plant stands or other similar touches for additional decor. You could make a wish tree out of copper wire.

Also, in fall and winter there are a lot of copper touches around for the holidays. Leaves, especially. You could intersperse those with rose petals to avoid looking too autumn-y…

If you don’t want your copper flashing so bright, you can order metal “aging” solutions - mostly from companies that specialize in historic house restoration. Application of the solution (with a rag or brush) darkens the metal. Very useful if you are installing a new pair of reproduction hinges, or doorknob, and don’t want to spend weeks and several cans of BarKeep’s friend shining up every other thing in the house - you can make your shiny, new metal a little or a lot darker, to match the stuff in place.

oooooh idea….you can use pennies, and glue them to your place card and do a theme kinda like “the one” or like we always say “my one and only” that would justify the pennies!

Check out plumbing and electrical supplies. The copper tubes and wire may be useful.

I found these shoes and they look rose-gold to me so I thought of you. I love them but alas…the price. Maybe your pockets are deeper? :)

Thanks for the great ideas everyone! I love the idea of the copper wire and copper containers. I am also definitely going to do some experimenting with copper spraypaint. I should have been on the ball more last fall and winter when things went on sale. Maybe there will be some pre-season sales at the end of the summer.

That copper and teal wedding is beautiful. Also, the rose gold shoes would be perfect, but like you, I have shallow pockets.

Thanks so much for the response! $1 is a steal! It is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Off to Michael’s this weekend! :)
