Planning A Pre-Wedding Minimoon

Mr. Cupcake is a die-hard, lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox. He has never lived in Boston — actually, he’s never even been there — but something about the history and the spirit of the team has always appealed to him.
Last Christmas I decided to get Mr. Cupcake tickets to see a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Tickets weren’t actually on sale yet, so I made him a replica that told him I’d be taking him to Boston for the Red Sox home game of his choice. With the help of Adobe InDesign, an image I found with a Google image search, and the Copperplate Gothic font, I put together a pretty convincing “ticket,” complete with a bar code for the sake of authenticity 
As you can tell, Mr. Cupcake wasn’t at all excited by this gift:
When tickets went on sale, we couldn’t believe how difficult it was to get two seats together for a weekend home game…. obviously, we were a little ignorant to the fact that Red Sox tickets aren’t all that easy to come by. After a few days of major frustration, we lucked out and were able to get ourselves two tickets to a Friday night game in June on StubHub.com. Then we had to actually start planning the rest of our trip!
We found a great deal on Orbitz for a round trip flight direct from Philly to Boston and three nights in a five-star hotel for a little over $500 a person. We’ll be staying at the Intercontinental Boston, right on the Waterfront, from Friday until Monday.

I don’t know how on earth this hotel package was less expensive than 3- or 4-star hotels in less desirable locations, but hey, I’m not going to put up a fight!
And here’s where Mr. Cupcake will cry when he’s overcome by the Red Sox spirit (he has already forewarned me that he will most definitely cry):

Although we’re not swimming in cash these days, we both agreed that planning this pre-wedding trip would be a nice break from what is sure to be a chaotic summer, and it is worth the money for the experience. Travel is something that I always want to make room for in our lives, even if we need to pinch pennies for a little while to save up. Seeing the rest of the country (and, hopefully, world) is too important to let pass us by, especially at this point in our lives when we don’t have too much responsibility just yet and we’re still young and agile enough to do as we please. Plus, taking Mr. Cupcake to see the Red Sox is something I really wanted to do for him, and we are so excited for our trip. (I, of course, will also make sure that we make a stop at Johnny Cupcakes, since, ya know, he’s family and all 
)

My fiance’ and I are die-hard Red Sox fans! Maybe me a little more than him! For Christmas, he gave me a membership to Red Sox Nation, that included 2 tickets to any home game! This gift made me think that I had nothing bigger coming for Christmas…boy was I wrong, when he proposed Christmas morning!!! We’re going to a game in June too! We don’t live in Boston, but we love the city, and you guys will, too!

We are most definitely taking a pre-wedding minimoon to Vegas for Memorial Day weekend. We’re both big poker players and so for us, it’s relaxing, but probably not for most people. ha!

You’re going to love Boston! I think the reason the Intercontinental is a little bit cheaper is because it’s really in the financial district and it’s dead on the weekends. It’s a few miles from Fenway but you’ll be close to Government Center and Fanueil Hall. Plus you’ll be by the water which will be very nice.
Boston in the summer is just gorgeous - enjoy Newbury and the Red Sox!
We are trying hard to make some of the actual wedding chores into little get-aways. Since we have to drive to get to Nordstrom, we are having an overnight getaway with a nice hotel and dinner (next weekend, hooray) to buy FI’s suit. We will just day-trip to pick it up after tailoring, but we actually enjoy trips in the car together. We have an afternoon of winery hopping and another nice dinner planned, to pick the wines for the reception. And we have another weekend away planned a month before the wedding to do some shopping for presents for our families, the BM and MOH, and our wedding presents for each other. It really is nice to have a little island of fun to look forward to in all the daily craziness.
I lived right around the corner from Fenway in grad school — give a nod in the direction of 580 Commonwealth Avenue, my old apartment building!
We have been tossing around the idea of nixing a honeymoon to save even more “downpayment” money, but I’m secretly planning a trip to see his favorite team, the Redskins, play an out of town game. It might be before the wedding if I could get tickets to Dallas! Thanks for your tips.. I’m going to try those sites!!

What a fun trip! I love how we have so many baseball fans among the bees and readers. We’re die-hard Cubs fans and just had engagement pictures taken on a tour of Wrigley Field - they turned out so cool despite yucky weather!

Yeah - I live in Bean town and work right by the Intercontinental - it is a beautiful hotel and there is a champagne bar there I believe - I haven’t checked it out yet! But want to!

We are taking a pre-wedding mini-moon to Mexico City in June. Same deal, even though we aren’t flush with cash, the deal was too good to pass up. I have been given strick orders that we will have no wedding talk or planning during our 4 day trip! I can’t wait!
The Intercontinental is lovely! The FI and I stayed there for a night and I believe we stayed in bed and watched DVDs because the bed was so comfy. You’ll have a wonderful stay!

I totally understand the FH’s concern about crying… not gonna lie, I cry a lil everytime I go to Fenway. I have no idea why. It’s just really moving. Plus, I am a huge geek.
Make sure you take the Fenway tour over the weekend. You cannot reserve them: you just have to show up but its totally worth it! All the information is on redsox.com: also your only a stones throw away from the North End! Yummy!
