Repurposed Flower Containers

April 22nd, 2008 @ 1:26 pm by Mrs. Violet

During my early days of wedding planning, I entertained the idea of nontraditional table centerpieces. Alas, I went the traditional route and decided on flowers instead. I wanted small arrangements filled with garden flowers that were very simple, green and fit our rustic chic theme. I looked high and low for the perfect vase and found nothing that fit my vision. Then I had an ephiphany.

I decided to skip the traditional glass vases and instead searched for cups! I’m a huge fan of Japanese stoneware so I knew I was on the right track. I finally found some at a Japanese store and purchased all 30 they had in stock. It was pretty affordable too - I think it was on sale 3 for $10 at the time. The latte brown cups are very earthy looking and not perfectly round, making them the perfect container for my garden flowers.

As seen at our reception:

These “vases” did not go to waste after the wedding. I immediately put the leftovers (our guests took most of the flower arrangements home) to use. These serve as my everyday cups. I use them for dinner parties and every day to satisfy my 6-8 cups of water servings. None of my guests knew that these were cups so it was quite amusing when I started drinking out of one of these at home in front of my clueless friends.

What did you use at your wedding that you have repurposed for another duty?

I’ve purchased vintage milk glass bowls/vases/candy dishes/etc. to place flowers in for the centerpieces and other tables. I’ve also bought a bunch of vintage cut glass to put tea lights in. And I’m trying to find a vintage mailbox to use as our cardbox. We’re also using up vintage (unused) stamps for the invitations. And I’m looking for a vintage cake knife/server (I’m thinking a depression glass knife). I’m trying to buy as many things as possible “used” instead of new. That way, an old item gets to be loved again, instead of collecting dust on a thrift store shelf, or contributing to a local landfill.

Once, I threw a party for my parent’s & bought some short clear drinking glasses to hold hydrangea stems…they worked great for the party & they’re still drinking out of the “vases”.

They turned out great! I love the earthy color of them. I also have various vases from our wedding and weddings of our friends. I reuse them as centerpieces for parties, around the house decor, to hold change even!
