Monograms & Magnets

April 23rd, 2008 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Pineapple

I am a fan of the trend to send magnets as your save the date. I like that people can just throw them up on the fridge and they won’t get lost in the pile of junk mail. On the other hand, I can’t help but think they can look kind of cheap, I love love love paper.

So, I decided to combine the two. I am making paper save the dates and little magnets to send along with them. The magnets were the first actual project that I completed. I was anxious to get something checked off the list!

I made about 40 extra - just in case. (Really, just in case? What did I think was going to happen to a third of them?) Here is how:

Materials:
Card Stock Paper
Magnet Sheets
Double Sided Adhesive
1″ Hole Punch (used for scrap booking)

1. Draw the monogram using a program such as adobe illustrator. (You can use any program you are comfortable with photoshop, corel draw, microsoft paint - anything. A vector program such as illustrator will, however, give you the smoothest results.)

2. Print out sheets of monograms on card stock (about 40 per sheet for me)

3. Apply double sided adhesive to the card stock (or use a Xyron “sticker maker,” I want one so badly :) )

4. Peel and stick the card stock to sheets of 5 mil magnet. The brand I bought was about $2 a sheet at Jo-Ann Fabrics. If you don’t have adhesive you can buy sheets with adhesive already on them. Such as this one. If you want stronger magnets, you can do that too, but your costs will go up.

5. Using a 1″ round paper punch, punch out the individual circles. Here is the one I have.

How are you doing your save the dates?

Cute idea.

We did magnet STDs using our engagement pictures and a calendar with our date circled.

Ppl loved them.

I don’t think they look cheap ;) But to each his/her own ;)

Pictures of them are in my blog.

You used the punch to go through the paper and the magnet? I’m not sure mine is that strong? Did it totally dull your punch?

VERY CUTE IDEA - I like that because after the wedding the guest can save the small magnet and think of you guys - but not have the entire save the date on their fridge.

I seriously still have like 4 save the dates on my fridge from years ago cause they have cute pics of the couples :) They’ll have to go one day though!

Magnets may look cheap if you don’t go with the right vendor. We got ours from Magnet Queen - and our magnets look stronger than any other magnets I have ever seen - clean edges with clear coat that looks like clear nail polish!!

@jilian: The punch did make it though, but near the end, not as cleanly as I had hoped. You can see the edges are not perfect in some of them in the photo.

Also, I’m not saying that save the date magnets are tacky or cheesy, that came out wrong. I love the concept, but it was conflicting with my love of paper, so this was a way I could do both.

I’m confused–do the magnets have your date on them, or are they just the monogram?

@Jay: They are just 1″ monograms that will be sent with paper save the dates. Post about those coming soon!

I also went with the magnet and paper save the dates. I printed the paper save the dates on my home printer (surprisingly, they didn’t turn out too bad) and had the magnets made from my own design at vistaprint.com. I got 200 business card-sized magnets for about $40. The magnets are a bit flimsy, but they do stick to a refrigerator (I know, I have a zillion on mine, because I over-ordered!). I love the circular magnets, though! Great idea! :o)

Ooh, cute, I like the round magnets. We did paper post-card sized save the dates with smaller business card sized magnets (both Vistaprint) stuck on the back so people could either keep just the magnet or the full paper. We thought it was working really well until we noticed that some friends had a postcard stuck to their fridge with other magnets. Sure enough, our magnet was still glue-dotted on the back of the postcard because they didn’t realize it existed.
