About Mrs. Shortcake

I was elated (inflated?) when I saw this totally tubular post at one of my favorite wedding blogs, Toast and Tables:

Pearls and Pedals and Petticoats, Oh My! : wedding themes vancouver Toastan
(from
Toast & Tables)

…BICYCLES!

Quirky, yes, charming, definitely - bicycles would make an exceptionally adorable entrance or exit for a casual, outdoorsy wedding, and as a motif are delightfully unexpected. I spent my university career pedalling around campus (often in heels for sorority meetings :) ) so bicycles definitely pull at my heart-strings, if not at my gear chain!

Not just for transportation, bicycles could adorn seating cards, programs, and invitations if you had a cute stamp such as this one:

(Salt Spring Stamp)

More pretty pedalling:

Even though I won’t be theming my wedding after the “tour de coeur,” I must say that this motif has definitely pedalled its way into my heart!

*insert collective groan over gratuitous puns here* :D

What do you think of bicycles? Bi-pedalled bliss, or a nuptial no-go?

We are using bicycles in our decor! My honey is a bicycle building/riding fanatic… He rides to work year round and we live in Chicago!

So, we are carrying a very cute shadow image of an old-fashioned-looking boy and girl on a road bike; the girl is on pegs. It appears on the invite, on custom postage stamps, the favor tags, and it will also probably appear on the escort cards.

If we can find a tandem for some photographs in time, we are definitely doing that as well.

Thanks for the bicycle post, Miss Gingerbread!

Super cute! “Bicycle built for two” could be a delightful song for the recessional, to tie into the theme. I’m loving it!

okay, my fiance’s family actually owns a red vintage tandem bike, yet i’m having the hardest time EVER convincing him to make it our getaway vehicle. i’m kinda known for my spastic tendencies, so he’s sure the idea would end in wedding day bruises, but i keep telling him i could change into a short dress and we could practice a lot beforehand. i still have 2.5 more months to convince him!

Stampin Up has an adorable stamp set of all bicycles. I used a stamp of a Tandem Bicycle that says “Everything’s better with Two” to make engagement cards for some friends. Would be such an adorable wedding theme!

We aren’t having a bicycle theme but we are using one for transportation! Actually we are using a bike taxi– or pedicab, as they are called in Charleston. It’s a common sight to see pedicabs downtown and we thought it would be a fun way to leave the reception. It will add some local flavor, it’s supercheap compared to renting a car, much more photo-worthy than mom’s Grand Prix, and eco-friendly!

How very Sartorialist of you. :-) He has a thing for photographing people on bicycles for his blog. It would be an utterly charming addition for an outdoor/casual wedding, for sure.

Rain City bikes in Vancouver sells European city bikes such as Batavus and Pashley that are as cool if not cooler than Jorg and Olif - in the same style. They are great for brides to ride b/c they have their chains totally enclosed and skirt guards on the back tires, so no catching your dress in the spokes or getting it greasy from the chain. I ride my batavus in a skirt and heels everyday and it rules.

My fiance’s mother gave us a vintage tandem bike for Christmas last year. We want to take pictures of us riding it with our two dogs running behind for our save the date cards at least, but I’m a little worried about the logistics of making it our getaway vehicle. We would have to travel across a very busy highway to get from the ceremony to the reception and at the reception…. well… let’s just say we will be serving alcohol and I’m already a clutz when I’m sober. Maybe we can just ride it for a block or two around the residential neighborhood where the ceremony will be and have someone pick us up before we get to the highway. Anyway, It will be part of the reception decorations at least and I think it’s quite possibly the cutest wedding theme ever!
