To be frank, the connection between our candy table and our Monopoly theme went over some of our guests’ heads (I blame myself entirely for not coming up with a more clever sign for the table). Nevertheless, the candy itself wasn’t overlooked, and in my book, that made it a hit regardless.

We offered candy with a Boardwalk theme in homage to Atlantic City. Most of it was right on the money — other options we fudged a bit, like the Smarties, though I was told by a reader they are made in the beautiful state of New Jersey, which is close enough for me! We also offered Crunch ’n Munch, salt water taffy, caramel apples (I wish I had photos of those lovelies — you can see a little bit of one behind the sign in the picture above), lollipops and cotton candy:
The cotton candy was the first to go!

Most of it went pretty quickly actually (with only some taffy left behind at the end — not everyone’s cup of tea, I guess). We went back and forth on when to put the candy out: too soon and the kids may have ransacked the lot of it; too late and some guests leaving early would miss it altogether. But here’s the kicker! The children were as kind as could be, asking both Mr. Petunia and I if it was okay to take an apple (there were limited amounts of them), how much was too much. The older folk? They swept in like vultures and cleaned us out quick. Goes to show you never can tell…
