DIY Gone Wrong

April 24th, 2008 @ 12:49 pm by Ms. Dahlia

It turns out that no matter how careful you are, there are some things that just don’t turn out as you imagined. Like my headpiece.

I had been planning to cover it with silk to match my dress, and had thought that I would pleat it, so it would look like the waistband. Now, I’m not the world’s best seamstress by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m pretty good at figuring out how to do what I want. I got to work, measuring, cutting, pleating, and then came time to pin the fabric to the cap to make sure I was positioning it properly. I then tried it on, and it ended up looking like the illegitimate child of the two caps below:

banded nurse cap

round eastern covering

Whoops. Not exactly the look I was going for. After talking with my mom, I decided to scrap the headpiece altogether, and figure out something else for my head.

What DIY projects have gone wrong for you?

Maybe you could just make it narrower, so it’s more headband-like, and less cap-like.

HAHAH, that’s great. Now I really want to see a picture of someone wearing it!

Oh man… my veil went terribly wrong too. At the bridal store my frugal side escaped and I though, “I’m not going to pay $300 for a veil, I’ll make my own.” Now, making the veil wasn’t too bad, but I also decided that I was going to hand bead the edge….with seed beads. Needless to say it took FOREVER! I only got the top tier done before I gave up and just bought a veil, which I loved. My original is still sitting in the closet though…it weighs like 5 pounds… there’s a reason veils don’t have solid bead borders!

Did you consider removing the veil from the cap and using it that way?
My mom’s veil was attached to a cap like that and now I’m using it with a comb. I like the thought of wearing the actual veil that my mom wore on her wedding day.
Good luck!

Could you take it to a local seamstress? In your OP, it sounded like it was important to you that you wear it to continue the tradition.

dear oh dear, it was a such a good idea - but i have no idea how i would execute it. I agree with kayleigh, if you still want to use it maybe go to a seamstress? Or just buy one from a store ;)

Sorry, I had to laugh, as your finished project looked just like the 1960s headpiece on my mom’s veil that I’m trying to figure out what to do with! I’m with KC- can you just use the veil part attached to a comb? That’s what I’m going to try…
