Mrs. Cupcake's Picture
Mrs. Cupcake, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 27, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Construction Project Manager Engagement Date: February 10, 2007 Wedding Date: September, 2008 Blogging Since: December 7, 2007 Venue: The Desmond Hotel in Malvern, PA About Me: Mr. Cupcake and I hit it off at a Halloween party and immediately began a long-distance relationship. After two years, he moved to my neck of the woods, and a year and a half after that, he proposed at the “place we fell in love.” I am a true perfectionist who enjoys designing and creating more work for myself, so wedding planning is my perfect outlet. Mr. Cupcake and I are both old souls, and we hope to weave that aspect of our personalities into our wedding day.

Creating A Photo Display

April 28th, 2008 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Cupcake

My Weddingbee bio states that Mr. Cupcake and I are both “old souls” — we are both extremely sentimental people who constantly talk about how things used to be “back in the day.” I love hearing stories about his childhood and seeing pictures of him growing up. So, naturally, I want to find a way to display pictures of both of us through the years, as kids through to adulthood, and then once we met each other.

Come on now — just look at how cute he was:

Mr. Cupcake still loves to fish, but now he wears sunglasses so he doesn’t squint like that

He’s not QUITE this messy anymore when he eats….

Not that I’m not going to try to give him a run for his money in the cuteness department….

Going for the wedding cake even at the age of three. Notice how quickly my left hand is moving away, as if I was ready to swipe some icing or something…..

Probably (no, definitely!) the only time you’ll see a shot of me in a bikini.

At Mr. Cupcake’s cousin’s wedding last fall, a great slideshow was included but the photos of Mr. Cupcake’s grandfather (whom he was very close to) got him very upset when put to some emotional music; he told me at that moment “no slideshow at our wedding!” He doesn’t speak up much about wedding details, so this was one request that I had to honor. We still wanted to include some old photos in our day, but thought it best to put the photos somewhere where guests can look at them throughout the night if they so choose. But how to do this?

Several weeks ago Mrs. Bird of Paradise featured the Knottie bio of bkbistro (as well as her planning bio) and I fell in love with her amazing idea of displaying old family wedding photos:

In the process, from her planning bio

And the finished product, from her wedding bio

As you can see, she found these old windows on Craigslist, which have a wonderful vintage look to them. While she included one large wedding photo in each of the panes (leaving a few with the glass exposed, which I love), I think it would also look cool to include collages of us through the years in many of the panes, and leave others with the glass exposed. On the panes where the glass is exposed, I think it might look cool to have some words or phrases printed out on vellum or some other kind of translucent paper (words and phrases to be determined!).

I am so excited about this idea, and I’ve started scanning all of our old photos that we want to include. I think it would look great displayed in the area that will be used for our cocktail hour, and where the bar will be located throughout the night. The only problem, though, is that I still haven’t found the perfect windows or doors to use! I found a great set of old French doors on Craigslist a few weeks ago for only $50, but someone else beat me to the punch and they were gone. So, I’ll continue to search for the next five months and hopefully find something that will work. Craigslist and flea markets are my friend.

(We have a beautiful set of French doors in our apartment that Mr. Cupcake is convinced that we could use, and they are perfect, but I don’t want to take the chance that something would happen to them, since we rent our apartment!)

Check out another one of bkbistro’s cute ideas, also using an old window:

And I love the simple way they decorated the aisle at their ceremony with fabric:

Have you found a lot of inspiration from Mrs. BOP’s Knottie bios of the week? How are you planning to display old photos at your wedding?

I am not sure if there is one close enough near where you live, but Habitat for Humanity has “Re-Stores” where you can buy gently used products for your home. I am sure you might be able to find something perfect/vintage there. As a bonus, the proceeds go back to HFH! Here is a link to stores in PA

Good luck!!

What a wonderful idea!
I recently went to a wedding where they Bride and Groom displayed old family wedding photos in frames on a fire place at the reception site.

I’m a big supporter of Habitat for Humanity, so I second that suggestion. The other thing that came to mind was architectural salvage yards - do a google search or check the yellow pages for ones close to you, and definitely call around. Some salvage stores are like expensive antique stores, with doors going for the thousands of dollars, others are more like recycling centers, just trying to keep stuff out of landfills.

Miss Shortcake: Aww, thanks Shortie :-) What won you over — the pink bikini? Hehe.

ErinMarieMack: thank you so much, what a great resource! I have never heard about that and I will definitely look into it.

AliCherri1: Funny, I’m doing that, too!!! There is a fireplace in the ballroom where we’ll be having dinner and dancing, so I’m going to put our grandparents, parents, and sibling’s wedding photos on there.

This post is such perfect timing! My FI and I were just talking about what we want to do. I saw Mrs. Eggplant’s slideshow and was totally inspired by it but I’m really sure if I have the time or if it will really work with our reception to do a whole presentation like that.

I don’t know that we would be doing your door frame idea, but it got the wheels turning in my head.

One of the MCs that we met with showed us a photo tree. They offer a package that includes a photographer to take pictures throughout the event, retouch them on location and print them out to hang around the location in these photo trees (they have studied with Scott Robert, so the quality is up there)… you may be able to incorporate something like the photo tree for your pictures =) Here’s a picture from their website:

We are framing the pictures of our parents and grandparents’ wedding days and putting them on the cake table. We are also making paper photo cubes of us growing up and our engagement photos and putting them on the tables.

I had a table reserved for pictures and guestbook stuff.

I found nice brushed silver frames at Aaron Brothers and put wedding pictures of the parents, grandparents, and some great grandparents in them. I also printed out labels for them on cardstock and put them in front of each picture.

I made color copies or print outs (you could also use originals) of photos of my husband and I from birth until now and scattered them under a sheet of plexiglass.

Both were simple and were big hits!

We are using vintage postcards of our hometown as our save-the-dates, so I’m planning to continue the theme with using vintage wedding-related postcards in combination with old family pictures that I’m printing onto postcard-sized cardstock for to decorate tables. But wow, I love the window idea.. so cool!

John and I are putting them on our table numbers! For example, table 11 will have a picture of each of us when we were 11. I’m really excited about that!

i really wanted to focus our wedding on ‘family trees’ and so incorporating photos was a must. i printed about 50 photos in a 3×3 size (kinda small) and matted them on brown cardstock. then my family/friends helped me add rhinestones to the cardstock to add a lil bling to it- then we punched a hole at the top to pull ribbon through it. my florist is going to provide willow branches in vases for me - 5 of them, sitting on a table. (1 vase/tree for my parents, #2 for his parents, #3 for my childhood pics, #4 for his childhood pics, and tree #5 for us together)

my wedding is this wkd so hopefully the family trees will turn out ok!

I’ve got a better idea for you than translucent paper…go to your local sign shops and ask them about gerber lettering (vinyl letters). They are basically stickers that you can stick to you window in whatever font and color you choose. It’s the same thing that businesses use to put lettering on windows or vehicles. This even allows you to get the look of etched glass!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!! and so easy. Try looking at http://www.fastsigns.com or google gerber lettering
