Up or Down?

April 28th, 2008 @ 11:23 am by Mrs. Hydrangea

Sunday equaled T-minus five months until our big day. In two weeks, I’ll be taking my bridal portraits and my biggest dilemma, for now, is my hair. You might remember that I had two trials, one not so hot, and the other was a big win. While I know that I want to wear my hair up for our wedding, I’m thinking of doing something different for my bridal portraits.

Up or Down? : wedding hair Dsc0149
My whole life I’ve really had short to medium length hair. Since Mr. H and I got serious, I’ve been growing it out. Maybe it was because in the back of my mind I thought that we were going to get married and I wanted to have long hair to do whatever I would want with it on my big day. Right now, while summer is quickly approaching and the humidity in Texas is getting stronger and stronger, all I really want to do is chop it off.

Yesterday, while getting my hair trimmed and colored, I was so tempted to just cut it off. When you are getting ready for work in the morning and end up sweating off your makeup while you blow-dry your hair, you start to wonder if the length is worth it. I told my awesome stylist (Patty at Richard Hayler, for those of you locals) that she had to wait five months before she could do anything fun with my hair, and I started to wonder if maybe I should do something different in my portraits then what I’ll do on the Big Day.

I have always loved this local wedding in the Dallas area, for many reasons, but particularly for the way the bride wore her hair.

Up or Down? : wedding hair Intro I
Should I wear my hair down for the portraits and up for the big day? This is the longest my hair has ever been, which is quite an accomplishment for me. I think it would be a great way to try out two hairstyles, but I know some people like to keep it all the same. What did you do for your portraits?

I say go ahead and wear it down for the bridal portraits and do something different! You’re going to have hundreds of photos on your wedding day with your hair up already, why not have 2 different looks?

I think weather to wear it up or down depends somewhat on the dress. And if you will be wearing a veil.
Also, I am wearing mine mostly down, with just the sides up to keep it off of my shoulders. My reasoning? I always wear my hair down (or in an icky pony tail!!) so I want to wear it down to look more like myself. Also my dress is a halter with lots of detail in front so i don’t want it coming over my shoulders. I will be wearing a veil but only a single layer so you could still see my hair.

Can’t comment on the bridal portaits. Didn’t have to think about that since i didn’t get them.

Does that mean you are going to be wearing your dress - 5 months before the wedding?

@Janna19: Bridal portraits are photos of a bride in her dress without anyone else. They are usually taken a month or so before the wedding and many brides place a portrait from their bridal session somewhere at the reception.

@enmoore66: Yup…I am only doing it so early because 1-2 months out from our wedding happens to be the hottest time of the year in Texas and I think it would be extremely uncomfortable, not to mention my makeup would probably sweat off.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a Texas thing, but it might be a Southern thing. I’m noticing that there are a lot of traditions in the south that aren’t practiced everywhere else when it comes to weddings.

I think you should wear your hair down for the bridal portraits, and even consider wearing it that way for the wedding. From the candid shots that you sent of you and Mr. H, you seem to wear your hair down mostly, and it looks great on you. You may find that you like the down hair better because it reminds yourself of your everyday look and looks more familiar.

Last advice: don’t give into the temptation to cut your hair!!!! You have a gorgeous head of hair…it’s shiny, thick and healthy looking and leaving it longer will give you so many more options for wedding hair, whatever you decide. I live in Houston, which is even steamier than Dallas, and I feel your pain - having long hair during the summer here feels like you are wearing a fur scarf 24 hrs a day :)

I’m with you — dying to cut off the hair I’ve been growing out for the wedding b/c the weather and the blow drying are a major pain! I’m even contemplating cutting it all off the day after the wedding so it’s gone and all for our honeymoon in Hawaii! I say, since it’s going to be much cooler for the bridal portraits and you’ll get some variety, change it up for each.

yes, bridal portraits are a southern thing.
i’m curious as to what other traditions you’ve found, ms. hydrangea, that seem to be strictly southern.

which ever you’re most comfortable with. My fiance loves my hair down, plus I feel most like myself when i have it down too, so I’ll have my hair down for the wedding.

I have to say i’m a fan of wearing it one way for the portraits and another for your wedding. This way you show off, you , and your dress in options!

Wow - never knew the bridal portraits were a southern thing. Granted, I’m from the panhandle of florida so my view is skewed to southern, but i thought they were just a traditional thing.

I like it up. Sometimes I like having long hair like right now but I usually wear it really short. But whenever I have the need for long hair I just go out and buy 16 inches of long hair. :)

I’m a vote for wearing it down, too. Have you considered half-up/half down? That might get you the look of the length, with the volume and height of an updo.

Bridal portraits are new to me too (reading from UK here) and seem so weird… I can’t imagine wearing my wedding dress with full hair, makeup and accessories before my wedding day. But you do get lots of photos without missing lots of your big day, so I can see the advantages.

On hair, I’d go for something different, so you end up with more different photos.
