Invitation Mockups and Revisions

April 29th, 2008 @ 9:33 am by Miss Cherry Pie

I’ve got oodles of design experience, but when it came to making our wedding invitations, I had NO idea where to begin. I asked my friend Kristin, who is making our invites on her very own letterpress, if she had any suggestions. Well, she had more than suggestions… she sent me a series of awesome design mock-ups to use as inspiration!

(She also has her own etsy shop Twin Ravens Press , if you want to see some of her cute card designs!)

We had her do some small revisions to the designs we liked best to help us decide on our favorites. For example, the original batch of mock-ups had a yellow color palette, but we changed to burgundy with chocolate brown and khaki accents to match our wedding colors.

I told Kristin that we liked botanicals that suggested late summer and fall, but we also wanted to keep our design simple and bold. She definitely got what we were looking for. Here are some of our favorites!

[ FYI, you can click on any of the mock-ups below to see them large. ]

Design #1, “Wheat”
We loved the simplicity of this design. Coupled with the length, it makes a very elegant invitation. She sent us a variety of color schemes to test different looks– the gray monogram and gray wheat are a mock up of embossing, not gray ink.

Design #2, “Waving Flowers”
I thought these delicate flowers were cute and romantic. Mr. Cherry Pie seemed to think they looked kind of like tentacle-hands. Haha.

Design #3, “Dandelions”
This mock-up features an embossed dandelion design that I purchased from iStockphoto. I love the summertime nostalgia of dandelions. Make a wish, blow, and watch your wish take flight!

Design #4, “Summer Bouquet”
I wasn’t super-fond of this design in yellow tones, but I started to like it more and more with bold, red colors. The wheat really makes the bouquet rustic and wild, which is just what we want to echo in our wedding florals.

Designs #5 - #7
Here are a few more great designs that didn’t make the cut into the second round of revisions.

We’re getting down to crunch time on our invitations and we really have to make a decision. Which design do you think is right for us?

I like #4 best, in either the all red or red and white. I do like the idea of having wheat, but I think in #1 the shapes of the stalks are too perfect. #3 is my second favorite.

I love #4!

What a great assortment to choose from! I really love the wheat invitation with the embossing. Whichever you choose, it’s going to be beautiful!

I don’t know which is you, but 4 is amazing!

I second the #4 design in all red. From your description of the beautiful outdoor location, it seems to fit perfectly. I also kinda like #2- even if they are “tentacle hands,” they are cute :)

design #4 in the last color palette!

Allow me to preface this by saying that all of them look very impressive!

I really like 1 and 2–both have nice, strong graphic elements and add just a touch of color that make them very eye-catching. While I like 3 on principle (the dandelion motif is a cute one)…I’m just not feeling it as much. And 4 is very bold, but the more I look at it (especially in red), the more I like that one, too. Top four, in order: 2, 4, 1, 3.

I love number four too! I prefer the one in the middle with the white flower. Very pretty options!

Anne says:

I like #1 and #4. I agree that #2 looks like tenticles!!! I prefer them both in the dark red. They’ll look great letterpressed!

10.
Beth Z. says:

#4 in all red! Lovely and perfect for the feel of your wedding.

I’m torn between #4, with the darker red colors, and #1 (the middle one, with the embossed monogram). I think the choice depends on how formal you want the invitations to feel. Your friend did a great job with these.

(Though I agree with Mr. Cherry Pie on the tentacles… complete with fingers… )

AMK says:

I love the gold wheat with monogram (feels very fall and very rustic), but I also really love the dandelions.

aefarr says:

I like number #3–simple and classic. Plus it has dandelions!

my hands down fave is #4!

Ooh, how exciting to be able to pick and choose your own designs!

Don’t forget that you can always mix and match your favourite bits of the designs. For instance - I agree with Mr CP about the tentacles of no.2 … but you could always have the same layout but using the wheat from no.2.

Personally, I love no.4, in red. I think the appearance of the wheat looks a lot more natural and ‘organic’ (i.e. rather than just three pieces popping up on their own - they look a bit random), and I think the layout of the text is very elegant. The flowers will look gorgeous in letterpress as well (don’t forget that letterpress always has a more muted look than print).

You might want to think about if you want a recurring design element/motif in the rest of your wedding. But then again, there’s no reason why this has to be the same as the invitations.

Your friend is very talented - hold onto her!

I like #4 too - in all red :)

… you might also want to think about how you’re going to assemble the invitations. I think no. 4 would look gorgeous on its own, but 1 and 2 would be lovely on a deep red backing card.

yes i agree, #4 summer bouquet

I agree with most of the hive, #4 in the red pallette is my fave. All are gorgeous though!

Marisa says:

When looking at all of these most of them I felt blended together. Only one to me really popped out on the page and it was #4 in red. The colors and design just really stood out amongst some of the smaller patterns and lighter colors. Any will look fantastic but #4 stands outs!

I love, love, love the dandelion invites. There’s something so dreamy about them. And it invokes memories of a happy childhood and carefree summers. When you still believed that making a wish on a dandelion was magical. *sigh* LOVE it. :D

BeesKnees says:

I vote Dandelions!
I love it-
its very different then the typical wedding invite. its sweet, original and whimsical.

27.
limesnall says:

I’m a fan of the dandelions, too! When I think about each design being letterpressed, I think the dandelions will come out even more amazing than the graphic! And I agree: there’s something whimsical and wishful with dandelions - carefree and fun!!

Good luck choosing; you’ve got a winner with any of them!

Definitely 1 or 2

#4 middle or #1 middle - I’m a sucker for brown. I totally feel like #4 seems more rustic to me.

I like the #4 in the red best. The wheat is evocative of Montana (at least the eastern part) and the flower has a nice fall feel to it.

I like the wheat best, I think, followed by the dandelions. They’re both gorgeous! (the others are nice too–you have a generous & creative designer friend!)

I just think both of those themes fit your unique location so nicely, especially with how I imagine it’ll look in late summer…

I love #1 and #4… the colors on them are really nice and the floral print on each stand out well. I like the boldness of 4 and the simplicity of 1.

Ok, I guess I am the oddball because I like #3 (the 2nd and 3rd design with the dots.).
