Shhhhh… It’s A Secret

April 29th, 2008 @ 12:10 pm by Ms. Dahlia

In the process of blogging about the wedding, it turns out that quite a number of guests have started reading the blog. (Hi everyone- I can’t wait to see you in a few weeks!) As a result, there are a handful of things that I’m super excited about but can’t yet post about, as it will ruin some of the surprise. (Fear not- I will blog about everything in full detail after the wedding.)

I know I’m not the only one who has some things being kept on the down low, but assuming Weddingbee is primarily trafficked by brides to be (and not interested guests), I think it’s safe to ask the following question.

What secret surprises do you have planned for your wedding?

I kept my wedding dress a secret from everyone - not just the groom :) Of course my mom helped me pick it out, and my photographer had seen it during my bridal portraits - but other than that it was a surprise!! That was fun for me :)

We hired a band! We were planning on using an iPod for music, but found a band we love by accident. We’ve mentioned it to a handful of people, but even my parents don’t know!

What I REALLY wanted to do was to surprise our guests with a different location. We’ll be doing our ceremony and reception at the same site. When it looked like we may out-grow the space, I thought about having buses arrive and swoop our guests to and from another site for a ceremony. I thought it would be fun (to announce “We won’t be getting married… HERE!”), but my fiance wasn’t thrilled by the idea. And besides, the band took my bus money! ;)

I bought two books published in 1913. One is called, “Don’ts for Husbands” and the other “Don’ts for Wives.” The Husbands booked is getting wrapped up and presented to my guy as a gift before the wedding and I’m using both of the books to write a speech. Some of the stuff in these books are just hilarious and MUST be shared with the world. :)

Our Nicole Wong cake topper!
Our choreagraphed first dance!
Everyone loved both and that made me happy. :)
There would’ve been too much pressure to please if they weren’t surprises.

so many things! our wedding song (known by only me and my fiance); our cake design (known only by the 2 of us and my MOH); the groom’s cake design (known by only me, the MOH, and my parents); the bouquet charms/ring holder/”this way to the wedding” sign (like mrs. petunia!)/other fun details. i’m having my father keep our father/daughter dance song a secret from me, so i’m allowed to keep secrets too. :)

We are going to have a choclate fountain (already booked/paid for) and are working on an ice cream stand from Cold Stone. Also, we are having a subtle KY Derby theme (table numbers named for horses in the race and mint juleps at the cokctail hour) to reflect where we met. Finally, I am going to get a gobo for the dance floor (Anyone with good vendor suggestions please feel free to share!) and am surprising the groom with a gift certificate to go heli-skiing (his life-long wish). I can’t wait! Too bad my wedding is in 2009 :(

-My Oakland A’s garter. FI’s favorite baseball team and I have managed to keep it a secret for over a year.

-The cutesy saying on our favor boxes

-I might surprise my dad with our father/daughter dance song. He has one picked out but I am thinking of using “Michelle” as a surprise. Not sure yet.

When my my FI proposed, he videotaped our engagement with his digital camera. I had no idea he was even proposing but the video is awesome and we’re the only ones that have seen it. We’ll show our family and guests over the wedding weekend. I can’t wait. It’s totally romantic!

We had lion dancers to introduce the wedding party at the reception and then we had our band come off the stage at the end of the reception to lead everyone outside so they could light their sparklers for our exit!

During dessert we are having shot glasses of milk each topped with a homemade cookie being passed by waiters. Who can resist cookies and milk???

We used Mrs Hibiscus’ DJ’s idea for a first dance which incorporated parts of us talking about our relationship and at the night of the wedding, everyone was so touched by what was said. I will remember the looks on some of our guests’ faces…it was amazingly beautiful! Now we have the customized song on our ipod to enjoy for many years to come!

@Renee: We’re doing that too! Unfortunately I’m not very good at keeping secrets so I’ve already told a ton of people… oops :)

I can’t keep anything wedding related a secret! I get so excited and have to share

I just bought FI’s garter and it’s a total surprise for him! It’s a combination Cubs and Red Sox that I had custom made on etsy. I’m so excited! He is certain that I will just have Cubs on it and neglect his Red Sox…

Our sparkler farewell is a secret! But the best one that it’s killing me to keep is our entrance songs - which my friends are just going to *flip* when they hear!

I’ve been really bad at keeping wedding secrets. I get so excited about it all, plus we’re asking folks to travel to the middle of nowhere for the wedding, so I feel extra compelled to share the fun details so people will want to come. Lame, and not the reason why people will come to our wedding, I know. I have, however, been able to keep my dress under wraps!

i am keeping the processional and recessional songs secret… and what the favors are… and a few other things…

Our favors are a secret. They aren’t something expensive but I think they are cute. They are gifts and gifts are meant to be secrets.

katiethelady says:

favors (photobooth) and ceremony musicians (bluegrass band) are our secrets. Not even our parents know. At first we kept this a secret out of necessity (we didn’t want any naysayers), but now its just fun.

I will be giving my bouquet to the couple in the room married the longest, instead of a bouquet toss. I would love to do a surprise slideshow if the boy will let me. I want to write thank you notes to each and every guest who attends and leave them at their place setting.

Who knows if any of this will happen, but I would like it to be a surprise for most people.

We hired on Elvis Impersonator for our reception (we were married by Elvis in Vegas). He’s going to surprise guests during dessert. Not even our parents know.
