Speaking Of Boys…

April 29th, 2008 @ 1:33 pm by Mrs. Donut

They’re so lucky. We girls spend hours upon hours in the search for our wedding gown. We wrestle with the seemingly endless choices of cut and fabric and length and shade of white and on and on and on. And then once we find The Perfect Dress, we have to fork over an obscene amount of money for a garment we will wear once. For about 6 hours. Yup. Boys are way lucky. Rented, off the rack, or bespoke, a good suit is a thing of beauty that will last for, well, a while. It can be worn again and again on any number of occasions.

Now,
Mongolia was hard on good suits. I mean really hard. All that dirt and ice and coal dust just reduced all Mr. Donut’s suits to mere threadbare shadows of their former selves that no amount of dry cleaning was going to cure. He needed serious wardrobe reconstruction, stat! One of the advantages of living in Singapore was that there were a plethora of good tailors, so getting a really nice handmade suit at a great price was pretty easy. Jack Custom Tailors in Far East Plaza came highly recommended, and so way back in September we stopped by and ordered what was to be the first of many bespoke suits for Mr. Donut. He’s absolutely besotted with them.

Jack’s is an absolute must for local and visiting masters of the universe both business and political. He’s made suits for everyone from princes to presidential candidates. The best part? Jack does amazing work and his prices start totally reasonably.

{The Man himself making sure that Mr. Donut’s
handmade shirt is to his liking.}

All in all Mr. Donut went home with 12 handmade shirts and 6 suits - 5 suits for work and 1 very special super nice suit for special occasions like getting married. ;-)

Is your groom having a suit custom made?

Hi Miss Donut! Thanks for sharing. I posted a while back about Mr. Onion’s experience having his custom suit made for the wedding. See it here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/07/17/custom-suit/

We are so pleased we made this choice and we’d love to save up enough to have a second suit made — maybe a simple black suit as an alternate for his brown-ish wedding suit.

Mr. Cherry Pie is having a suit made here in Seattle! I’ll write more about it once I have details from him. :)

Miss Donut, are there any women’s tailors that you’d recommend in Singapore?

He wishes he could have a custom suit made! He was in Thailand for a couple of months a few years ago and came back with a closet full of suits and shirts that look amazing on him. I only wish we could get that all of the time!

I am trying to help my fiance pick out a decent suit, and accessories! I have had a hard time finding good sources for ways to dress up a suit. What accessories will Mr Donut wear with his suit? Long tie or bow tie? Belt or suspenders? Any kind of vest? Oh the questions go on and on!

Also, anyone have groomsmen who had to rent suits? Not all of my guys guys won black suits. We are having quite a time figuring all this out.

It’s actually been harder for him (a real shock!) than it was for me! I bought the first dress I tried on and he’s looked at dozens of suits.

My husband loves his tailor in Hong Kong and no longer buys anything off the rack. And why would he since everything the tailor makes fits him better and is cheaper than buying some of the things off the rack?

So of course, for our (destination)wedding, we got the groom’s suit and groomsmen’s garb (shirt & pants) from our tailor in HK. The groom was fitted, but the groomsmen’s stuff was made solely on measurements that we gave the tailor. And surprisingly, despite going solely on measurements, everything turned out perfectly.

Mine did! he’s had a couple of suits made by the tailor before, and the tailor still had his previous measurements on record.
