The Dress!

April 29th, 2008 @ 11:04 am by Miss Pineapple

(Back away slowly and calmly Mr. Pineapple and no one will get hurt.)

As I explained earlier my bridesmaids and mother live all over the east coast. This made me the saddest when thinking about gown shopping. I am lucky to have amazing friends and family who flew all the way to frozen Pittsburgh in late February to help me find my gown. Poor Mr. Pineapple had to survive a weekend with 6 girls, my father and himself in a 2 bedroom apartment. Since everyone was only going to be here for one weekend, I wanted to make it count.

I heard some bad things about David’s Bridal, but really wanted it to work. They are such a huge business and have so many stores how could they be that bad? The woman helping me out was so patient and kind. She let everyone shoot many many photos of each dress and didn’t mind a bit that I brought so many girls along. I had a back-up appointment about an hour away just in case, but I didn’t need it!

My only requirements were 1) it fits, 2) I feel pretty and 3) my boobage is kept under control.
Here is the dress shopping adventure.

I really loved the waistline of this dress, it made me feel super skinny! However, this particular beading looked a little cheap or something. Now looking at the photos it is a bit too booby too.

This dress did not meet requirement number three, too much boobage.

I loved this dress, well the idea of this dress. Once I had it on it did this weird gap thing below the waist, very disappointing.

This was my least favorite of all the gowns. It definitely did not make me feel “pretty.” The waist was really wide. Drop waist + curves = bad news bears.

This was my favorite from pictures on the web. However, I am not built like the model in the photos and I didn’t want to get my hopes up. It was also the most expensive dress I had planned on trying on, so in the back of my head I was almost hoping I wouldn’t like it on.

Then, once I had it on I loved it! I loved the color, I loved the ruffles! This dress was a size too big which threw me off a bit, but once it was clipped tighter I loved everything about it!

As soon as I put this gown on I said “Um, what is this made of? It’s crunchy.” It was also shiny and not very pretty. Not a winner.

I also really loved this dress on. The halter top kept me in place and was flattering. Other than that there really wasn’t anything special or unique about it. It was still in the top two of the day. Also, after looking at is in the photos, I’m not impressed.

Now this dress my maids and Mom Pineapple picked out as a joke. They picked the biggest (and heaviest!) dress in the store. I was completely lost in it. Oh the poof! It even stood up on its own without anyone inside it!

Trying on all the gowns still felt somewhat surreal. Like I was trying on costumes for a play. Until, the veil and headpiece. As soon as she put them on me I turned completely red all over and had to fight back tears. The dress looked so different with the accessories. The veil is perfect, slightly girly, slightly vintagey. At first I was anti-headpiece, but this one was perfect for me- champagne and ivory pearls.

The final choice! So, the most expensive gown won, but it was on sale and ended up being about $150 more than the others and I loved it more than a $150 more.

Anyone else find THE dress on their first try (in less than and hour and fifteen minutes for that matter)?

I did! Mine is actually the halter-top one you tried on. I had been looking at it online, and once I got it on, I didn’t want to take it off. Another girl (a total stranger) looked over at me and said, “That’s your dress.” I really didn’t want a strapless gown, which significantly limited my options. You look beautiful in yours!

I had a similar experience at David’s Bridal - I think people try to go when they are super-busy, and that’s when they don’t have a good time. My sales person was also really helpful and let us take lots of pictures and stuff. And I found my dress in the first 5 I tried on!

Yay for finding “the one” so quickly and painlessly!

Kayla says:

Eeee! The third dress you tried on is my dress :D I love the poof under the belly because it hides my real belly :P
It was also the third dress I tried on and I bought it right away

That was definitly the prettiest of the bunch, I was rooting for it to win the entire time reading your post. Good choice, miss Pinapple, you will be a stunningly beautiful bride!

You look so happy and BEAUTIFUL! I really liked the first dress you tried on, but the one you picked is even prettier!

I tried on so many dresses and loved all of them…I couldn’t narrow it down. I went to several stores, but found one store where I really liked the online pictures and every dress I pulled off the rack was by the same designer (without even looking at the labels)…

My dress was the first one I tried on at that store…even though all the dresses were pretty I kept thinking about the first one and how there was nothing I would change about it…and it was the least expensive!

I also went to David’s Bridal and had an amazing experience! The woman who helped was so great! The dress I bought was the second one I tried on, I got Oleg Cassini CT221 and love love love love love it! I also got mine on sale for $150 off and it came in 3 months early! YAY for David’s Bridal!! :-) You look amazing in that dress and I’m so glad you had a good experience with them.

Oh by the way, we are wedding dress shopping twins too. Hehe. Although the dress was the first wedding gown I ever put on, I didn’t want to be impulsive, so I tried on other ones. I ended up with our dress. :)

@Candi1024: I would love to see photos of your dress, you too Joanne! You can email me at pineapple@weddingbee.com. I was googled my dress over and over again looking for real brides wearing it.

You are all making me blush, thanks for the sweet comments.
I am glad to hear others have had a good David’s experience too. I’m sure not all stores are the same, but I’m glad mine was one of the good ones!

i did too, me and my mom first appointment (marc ingrahm in NYC). Love the dress, it is perfect on you!

One store I went to wasnt’ a good experience, the second one was great! I went back to try it on to make sure it was “the one” after visiting some other stores. I loved your dress on in store BUT when I got home to look at pictures, it didn’t photograph well on me! But it really does look great on you. I think my photog may have a few of a girl in that dress.

My dress was the 2nd dress I tried on, but I knew it was the one as soon as I saw it. I’m so glad to be reading all these comments, I thought I was a little crazy for buying the 2nd dress I tried on, especially since I bought it over a year before my wedding :) but I’ve had it for over a year now and I still love it and the way I look in it :)

furelysse says:

I found my dress at the first store and it was the first dress I put on. It just felt so perfect on me that all of the ones I put on thereafter just paled in comparison. It’s an Anjolique #930, a lot more expensive than what I wanted to pay, but I just knew it was THE dress.

dellastella says:

Miss Pineapple, it makes me really happy to read your great review of David’s! I had an awesome experience there too, but I’ve experienced much snobbery about going there. Glad to know that I’m not the only one who David’s Bridal won over! :)

GJ says:

Very happy that you found your perfect dress! I just wanted to comment on one point you made about dropped waistlines–I totally understand that that one didn’t work for you, but for girls who are curvy and short-waisted, a dropped waistline can be an ideal solution! Of course, everyone should try on a variety of styles to find what works for them, but I just wanted to put in a plug for dropped waistlines–they can work for curvy girls!

I got mine from David’s Bridal, too. I had several weeks before I was able to make it to the store, so I looked online a lot and knew what I wanted to try on. I actually tried on the first dress and knew it was the one and didn’t even bother trying on any of the others I had picked out.

You look so lovely in your dress! It is perfect for you and my favorite of your pics by far:) The joy on your face just radiates; it is evident that you found “the one”. Congrats!

I also found my dress at the first place I went within an hour:
http://www.priscillaofboston.com/dress_detail.jsp?gid=105&sfid=288&f=

It was hard to make the rest of my appointments that day because I was already set on it! When you know, you just know!

p.s. One of my friends had the poof-he he! It looked divine on her, but she did make the same comment you did about the dress standing up on its own:)

Ally says:

I also went to David’s Bridal for my dress and found “the one” in under two hours. I had already picked it out on their website as my favorite (it looks just like a Lazaro gown that I loved), but made sure I tried it on last. I’m glad I tried it on last, because I instantly loved it (save the best for last)!! Congrats on finding The One! You look beautiful!! :o)

my story is just like furelysse’s. my dress is the very first one i tried on. it’s too expensive, so i haven’t bought it yet, but there’s no way i’ll be happy with anything but it. i just know im going back to buy it soon.

Ashley says:

my dress was the second one i tried on at davids bridal! I tried on 3 more after it, just in case, but none of them came close!

David’s has been so far so good, but I want to make sure not to give them too much praise at this point because I still have to go through alterations. Of course, the buying the dress part went very swimmingly. :) I will of course keep you all updated…

29.
Dana says:

I too went to David’s. Love it! :) I shopped in one day and found the dress. It actually was the dress that you tried on as a “joke” the poofy one. :) Funnily enough, my BMs made me try it on as a joke too… totally thought I would hate it, but I loved it. :) Yay for quick dress shopping!

LittleMissBride says:

I had the same experience as furelysse - first store, first dress!! Amazing, especially since my friend and I had randomly picked about 15 dresses to try on and that was the first one the clerk handed to me. Every other dress kept being compared to that one!

I did go to David’s afterward w/ my bridal party and I looooved your derss, Miss Pineapple! If I hadn’t already found The One I would have gotten it! You look beautiful in it!

seberu says:

I love it! I had that dress hanging outside my dressing room ready to try on but I never got to it when I found the dress I loved. I tried on several of the ones that you tried on as well! I think we’ve got the same veil too. You can look on my blog (scroll down a bit) for pics of the dresses I tried on and my comments.

I had actually seen my dress a year before I got enagaged when I was helping my now FSIL find her dress. It was on a mannequin in the front of the store and I couldn’t stop staring at it and daydreaming. Then a year later I went back to the same store to try on dresses for myself (w/ my mom and FSIL). I promised myself that I would try on lots of dresses and go to at least 2 stores (one of them being Davids) and not get too focused on that one dress. Of course as soon as I put it on, it was like it was meant to be.

I LOVE the photos of you in your dress. You look so happy!!! Great pick. It looks fantastic. And if you smile like that on your wedding day, you’ll look like you a million bucks :)

AMayBride says:

My dress is your least favorite. I bought it on my first shopping trip under duress from my mother and MOH. I wasn’t impressed with the dress at first, but now that it is altered and bustled (not by David’s) it looks absolutely gorgeous. When you lace up the corset, you really need two people (one to lace and the other to hold the dress to your body) to make sure it shapes you well.

Congrats on your dress. You look fab!!

Sweeney2Be says:

so FUNNY, My mom picked out the same dress as a joke! LOL we took a pic of it standing alone as well, and of me wearing it and sitting (or trying to as it would be) on the ground - I looked like a little fairy caught in a cloud! SO funny!

I am one of those who hate DB, but I am so glad you had a good experience. My BFF picked a very similar gown to the one you chose for your own dress. You can tell it’s perfect for you because you just look SOOO happy in it!

The third dress is my dress. I got it at the Brides Against Breast Cancer sale in my area - a year and a half before my wedding. It was the 4th dress I tried on and the first time I had ever gone dress shopping. I just knew immediately it was for me.

@Mrs. Bee: wow it certainly is! I went back into the archives, I love seeing other brides in my gown. Especially lovely ladies like Violet and Poppy.

missm says:

Lovely! I had crazy good luck dress shopping - the first dress at the first shop was THE dress. Ironically, I picked it up almost as a joke, figuring everyone needed to at least try on a strapless confection. It’s cleverly cut and not pouftastic like the dress above, thankfully, though it may be so constructed that the bodice would stand up on its own.

My mom is flying in from out of town tonight so we can pick up my dress tomorrow - so excited to try on my actual dress in a size that fits!!!

piperbenjamin says:

we are dress twins… i love love that dress. it took me 2 trips to db to find it, and i tried on a ton of dresses at other shops, but i just loved it & bought it the same day i tried it on. did you get it in champagne or ivory?

43.

Miss Pineapple says:

@piperbenjamin: champagne, which is one of our “colors”

44.
meelahj says:

when i went dress shopping the lady helping me said out of all the dresses choose the one that you like the most to try on since that will set the tone for the rest of the fitting…and while i was unsure about it i chose the one i eventually bought…when i tried it on me, my mom, and my aunt all got teary eyed…and after trying on a million dresses that day at various shops i eventually went back a few days later to try it on again and decided to purchased that dress…
