Trying to plan a wedding in a new city, not to mention a new country, is tough, but the fact that we can get legally married here more than makes up for it! The wedding will be an opportunity for most of our family and friends to see our new city for the first time so it will be both a wedding and a reunion. Besides my future wife, I am also madly in love with a good bargain, Swedish pastries, Tivo, and my two dogs and calico cat (in no particular order).

About Mrs. Gingerbread

My heart skips a beat when I find pictures of “outside of the box” couples on their wedding day. It can be difficult in my own wedding planning to try to superimpose ourselves into the “traditional” wedding, so I enjoy seeing how other people challenge the status quo in a way that celebrates their love, individuality, and style. I was thrilled to come across the wedding of Aly and Elroi, who were featured last year on Offbeat Bride. Apparently, their friends not only made their cake and invitations, but also Aly’s dress and Elroi’s suit! That’s amazing!

I was even more thrilled when I found out that they were recently featured as a story on Logo’s series “Be Real.” According to the website, the episode is called “Commitment” and it “showcases two couples (gay boys Josh & Brian, and queer gender rebels Aly & Elroi) who just wanna love each other and be recognized as such”. I never cry when I watch weddings, but I was seriously tearing up watching Aly and Elroi’s ceremony. *Sniff sniff* If you can’t watch videos at work, then you can get a sneak peak by looking at their amazing photos.

To watch the video, go here, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, and click on the Be Real: Season 1 - Commitment link.

Now that I’ve shared one of my favourite weddings, I invite you to share one of yours :)

That blue is just mesmerizing… No video at work but photos are awesome. Just looks like they’re really enjoying the whole thing.

That was beautiful! When Aly was walking down the isle and crying and laughing, it made me cry and laugh, because I know when I see my soon-to-be hubby, I will be doing the same thing!
Thank you for sharing that!

the pictures of this wedding on offbeat bride (i think) are what led me to hire thos photographers — i think that is one of the most beautiful weddings i’ve ever seen — so creativ and clearly authentic to who this couple is.

amazing — when i get home i’m watching the video!

I LOVE their wedding!

Here’s one of my favourites: http://weddings.theknot.com/ODB/themes/realweddings/view.aspx?id=21708&type=1&style=Outdoor%2fGarden&pageIndex=4&MsdVisit=1

Not only are they both two of THE most gorgeous brides ever, but I love the soft, vintage feel of their wedding. It reminds me of some small Shakespearean affair!

so… i’m allowed to watch videos at work, but i’m not supposed to start sobbing in front of my computer. aly’s vows were so beautiful.

ok now i am crying too! I remember going to city hall to get our marriage lic and I too cried like a baby. It made it so real. I loved the mom’s honesty and I think it rang somewhat true to the journey S and my mom’s have been and still are on.
I loved the way the stories highlighted how even though the ceremonies may look different the most important thing is the love which is so obvious in both those stories.
As for my fav wedding I have to say it is mine. I cry every time I look at the pictures

@Ley: Ooh, I hadn’t seen this one! Thanks for the link. I especially love how the proposal took place while baking gingerbread cookies :) I love the photo of them riding off on a bicycle for the get away. And I also appreciate that they had 7 flower people, since I have 5 nieces and a nephew. Maybe 6 flower people is a reasonable number afterall.

@sam: Wow, your wedding gave me chills throughout the whole slideshow! Beautiful. I love the diversity of queer couples :) Who was the adorable older woman with the glasses? Is she one of your mothers?

@Miss Gingerbread: That woman would be my crazy mom! The woman dancing twirling her wrap around is my mother in law. As you can see they both know how to have a good time. Oh and I am the short bride.

The one that still gets me choked up every time I think about it is the marriage of Del and Phyllis…
http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/04/03/the-long-engagement/

The thought of them waiting 51 YEARS to be be able to marry each other. The sheer joy of all the people in the photo. The fact that they don’t care about the fancy dresses, or the candy buffet, or the wish tree … they only have eyes for each other …. sob!

I think of those two every time I start to worry about the stupid stuff of wedding planning.

Aly + Elroi = My favorite wedding ever. So far! :)

Sam, your wedding was just GORGEOUS! You and your partner look so, so happy. I love the first (I think B&W) picture of you two kissing. .. and the one where you’re both sitting at a table, it looks like listening to toasts.
Congratulations to you both!!

Wow, I pop in her for a quick study break and here I am an hour later with tears streaming down my face. Thank you all for sharing.

GB, thank you for sharing your frustrations in that earlier post with the immigration system. I printed it out and brought it into my immigration law class for discussion. It really helped make my classmates see how the law we will all practice soon actually affects real people.
