About Mrs. Cupcake

One thing that most brides hope for on their wedding day is good weather. I am no exception — I want a beautiful, sunny, lightly breezy day that will allow us to take pictures outside and allow our guests to not get soaked as they journey from our ceremony to our reception.

Of course, I can’t predict what the weather will be like on our wedding day, especially 5 months in advance, so I’m preparing myself for rain in the event that our day isn’t dry after all. I guess I can handle a rainy wedding day, as long as it means some cute photo ops:

As much as I don’t want rain on our wedding day, I do love the moodiness of rainy wedding day photos. (Rain gods, this is still not a request for a damp wedding day, okay?) I want to prepare myself with a cute umbrella in the event that some precipitation does dampen our day, but not our spirits. There’s always good old white:

62″ Giant White (that’s actually what it’s called)

Or classic black:

Stanley Blacker Regal

Or…. Elvis??

Elvis in Concert Tupelo
(No thanks, I’ve always been more of a Beatles fan myself)

Then there is this cute little number, if you want to spend over $200 Canadian (yikes!):

Chantal Thomass Tulle Fronce Umbrella

Or looky at this fun polka dot number for only $35 Canadian (and it comes in teal!)

Christian Aujard Polka Dot Umbrella

And the more frilly version of polka dots (I’d steer clear of the pink and go for the classic ivory with black)

Frilly Polka Dot Umbrella

I looooooooooooooooooooooove this one for $65:

Sonnet Black

And this stripey little number with a black edge:

Mani Green (also comes in pink)

Are you preparing for possible rain on your wedding day with a cute umbrella?

I was really hoping that our engagement pics would work out in the rain, but they didn’t. I love all the cool umbrellas and think they make for awesome pics. Like you, I’m hoping for sun, but the rain wouldn’t ruin my day either!

I like the umbrellas that are black on the outside and blue with white clouds on the inside. That way, you get your blue skies no matter what happens.

You can find them at the MoMa store for under $50.

I brought an umbrella in a bright color, just in case. We had torrential rain the night before, rain the morning of, and blue skies just in time for the (outdoor) ceremony! We did have an extremely brief, passing sprinkle in the middle of the ceremony, but it was no problem.

I concur with the black-with-white accent umbrella love–that would be so striking in both color and B&W photos. Very elegant!

And now for something completely different, here’s a “color wheel” umbrella that has the entire spectrum and could look a little off-the-wall in a fun, quirky way:

But here’s hoping for no rain!

I am almost starting to hope it will rain on my wedding day after admiring this beautiful collection of photos! I am going to book mark it and come back and look at it if rain is forecast in the days before our wedding!

And I’m certainly going to treat myself to a big umbrella just in case. I *love* huge umbrellas. The polka dot ones are so cute!

I was married in London, so we had to be prepared! My mom bought 7 large white umbrellas just in case. Of course that meant the sun shone all day, perfect!

As far as pictures go - you don’t want too much sun!! I was kinda bummed my wedding day was overcast - BUT - it made for SOME AMAZING pictures. Seriously what my photographer did in ps with the clouds is unreal. Everyone oooohhs and ahhhs at the photos.

Moral - clouds are good = great photo light :)

It POURED on our wedding day. I think I was the only bride who prayed for rain though. I just didn’t want it to be ridiculously hot. :) It was beautiful in the morning, then in the middle of the ceremony (at a key point I might add) there was a GIANT clap of thunder and a downpour. It started to let up by the time we were ready to go outside for pictures, but I LOVED out pictures with the unbrellas. And, post rain lighting is fantastic from a photography perspective. The picks are on our website. I love them. Andrew had a simple black umbrella and I had my pink one. I think they turned out super cute.

Seattle brides ALWAYS have to be prepared for rain. I will be renting from Bella Umbrella (and I secretly hope it does rain!)

Hey, I’ve got that last one (the Mani), and love it!

As for our wedding day, my bridesmaids and I had red parasols. Don’t know how much they would have done in a serious downpour, but it eased my worries about drizzle. And though the day was sunny, parasols look great in photos either way.

I do love the umbrella idea and I will probably buy one before the big day. I know you can rent them pretty easily so the cost can be minimal.
My biggest worry right now…CICADAS! They are coming back this year and of course invading the area we will be getting married in. How do you prepare for that one?! Ha!

We bought big golf umbrellas with alternating black and white panels at Target, just in case - ended up needing them part of the time, which was fine by me because it meant that we got some cute umbrella pictures and some non - best of both worlds! The people who say that overcast is the best light for pictures are right, though - no squinting in your photos!

Thanks for this post - I just picked up a case of 24 60 inch umbrellas from overstock.com on the cheap just in case!
