A Table…

April 30th, 2008 @ 4:48 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

As time passes, I seem to change my mind on what I want to do for the table numbers. At first Mr. Flamingo had suggested having vintage movie posters, but I soon realized that they could be very complicated and hard to understand. First off, if the guests don’t know the movie specifically, they will need to search to find the actual title on the poster. In those years there was type all over the place - the actors’ names were more prominent than the actual movie title - so I think it may be hard for the guests to find their table. Another important point is that the majority of the guests are French and all the movie titles are in English.

I really liked the imagery of the 1933 movie The Songs of Songs. Not only is the imagery beautiful, but it’s vintage and wedding perfect… and it’s actually a love story too.

Here is the original poster :

Then I thought why not use that poster for all the table numbers? That way the same message will be on all the posters, which means less confusion and we’ll actually use numbers. So I used my Illustrator and Photoshop skills and tried to re-create this poster to suit our wedding.

This was the criteria I needed on the poster:

  • It needed to look like a movie poster
  • It had to keep the actual feel of the original poster
  • We needed to write our names in there somewhere
  • It had to be bilingual

This is what I came up with… (click to enlarge)

I really like the outcome of the poster, I think it’s perfect. But I haven’t shown Mr. Flamingo yet, and I’m afraid he won’t like it. He really wanted to go more towards the glamour route but I think that this poster is kinda glamour - no?

What do you think?

It looks so stylish and classic! I’m a sucker for those old posters as well. We might do something similar, with movie names as our table names, but without the poster because we’re using clapper boards instead. I sort of wish I’d thought of something like this before I got the clapper boards! But then I don’t know if FH would go for it….

I think it looks amazing, and I agree that it does look glamorous! I’m so jealous of everyone’s photoshop and illustrator skills. I need to start playing around with that kind of stuff.

I think it looks fantastic!
Just one worry: will guests *know* that the number 5 means it’s table 5, nad not like 5 is the number of the movie. I’m sure they’ll get it when they see different numbers on different tables right?

It does look glamorous. Come on, it’s Marlene Deitrich! Of course it’s glamorous.

I wonder if leaving the Paramount Pictures name and logo on the bottom is problematic. I mean, I doubt Paramount Pictures is going to hunt you down over this, but as long as you are changing so much of the rest of the poster it might not be a bad idea to remove the Paramount logo at least.

I love it. I think the Mr with love it. Misspell paramount or pictures and you are good to go - no copyright issues if its not spelled right! (If you spell it Paramont Picture no one will notice.) or come up with something thats a play on words for it. LOVE the rest of it.

It’s really gorgeous. I love the fonts!

And please don’t listen to the suggestion that by spelling something incorrectly there are no copyright issues–that is completely bizarre and not true. Plus if you spell it incorrectly, people will notice (I would). I wouldn’t worry about copyright anyway–for one, Paramount has much better things to do with its time, and second, you could probably make a strong argument for “fair use.”

I agree that Paramount has better things to do than hunt you down over redesigning (quite excellently) such a fab poster for your wedding day table numbers ;). Are the posters on that site high enough res to print or are you just editing out the pixellation, etc?

Thanks everyone for the input. I showed Mr.F and he loved it. I am sooooo happy. Another thing i can cross off my list.

fadedblue - the image is pretty good resolution - just click on the actual poster image you will see how big it is. I am printing it 5 x 7 so no pixels.

Jenni - I didnt match the font, I actually traced it in illustrator. In those years all the fonts were designed by hand so its hard to find equivalences on the computer. At the same time it would of taken me hours to try to match them. Whats great is that almost all the letters I needed for my poster were on the original one, so its not like I needed to invent letters ;)
