Honeymoon Help

April 30th, 2008 @ 6:22 pm by Ms. Dahlia

I’ve talked quite a bit about our honeymoon, and now that it’s coming close, I realized there are some things that I need to figure out.

Like what to pack. As we are traveling with carry-ons only (since spending a month backpacking in Europe, I have a hard time packing more than just a carry-on), space is pretty limited. I thought I’d share my packing list for other people traveling to warm climates who hope to pack light, as well as open it up to any suggestions for items that I have forgotten.

Clothes (including what I will wear on the plane):
2 knit dresses
1 pair shorts
1 pair pants
2 short sleeved shirts
1 cardigan or long sleeved shirt
birkenstocks
sneakers
socks
underwear
3 swimsuits
1 pashmina
rain jacket
(I plan on buying some nicer sandals once we’re in Bali.)

Toiletries/makeup:
sunscreen*
bug repellent*
after sun lotion*
toothpaste*
facewash*
toothbrush
razor
deodorant
mascara*
lip gloss*
contacts
contact solution*
glasses

First aid kit:
neosporin*
band-aids
rifaxamin (for traveler’s diarrhea)
malarone (for malaria prevention)
personal medications
pepto-bismol chewable tablets
imodium AD
advil
purell*

Important documents:
passport
plane ticket confirmations
doctor’s note about prescription meds
1 bank card
2 credit cards
$100 bills (number TBD; supposedly you get the best exchange rate in Bali if you have 100s)

Misc.
money belt
2-3 paperback books
2 travel guides
Ipod
sunglasses

*means that it is a liquid, and therefore must go in a 1 qt bag. I’ve figured out how much contact solution I’ll need (2 small bottles), and Mr. Dahlia and I will split the load as far as the remaining liquids go.

Anyone have any recommendations for things to add to the list?

Be sure to get CRISP NEW $100 bills. They’ll hand back the old tattered ones at times.

Please take a picture of your quart bags! I *hate* checking luggage, but I have not yet figured out how to get all my liquids into tiny containers.

A tip:
I haven’t been to Bali, BUT…you might not want to count on getting sandals in Bali. Often shoes in Asia are much wider than in N. America–I had a hard time buying shoes in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore.

woah! that’s a GREAT list!! what about other electronics - camera, camcorder (optional), chargers, backup battery, extra memory card?

If you want to go out to a nice dinner you may want heels, make-up, perfume. For make-up I have a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, and you can get a blush/bronzer stick so you don’t need to bring separate brushes. You can bring a tiny perfume sample. Cover-up? Lingerie?-this is your honeymoon. How many days are you going to be gone? Are you bringing only a carry-on because you are back packing, or because of convenience? Have fun :)

toilet paper role - random places might be out and its always handy for napkins etc, also maybe a little hand sanitizer if you have space in the liquid bag.

ME!? will I fit in your carry-on bag?? Sounds like a wonderful trip you have planned!

We went to Costa Rica - which was HOT! I wanted no part of make-up (even mascara) or lingerie! I slept in the coolest silk slip lingerie I had brought - nothing fancy. (And I had packed a different ’surprise’ for every night of the trip - oh well!)

Hmmm - maybe tweezers and nail clippers in your first aid kit - could always come in handy - not sure what the carry-on restrictions are for those.

This may be silly - but a nail file :) You’re sure to be rough on your hands - and I don’t need my nails to be beautiful - but I can’t stand rough edges that snag!

Also a hat - don’t see that on the list. Something fun with a wide brim - I have a lightweight SPF something or other O.R. hat that I always wear at the beach, boating, and hiking etc - anytime I’m in the sun really.

As for the liquids, my suggestion is to try drugstores (or my favorite http://www.flight001.com) to find a better bag. You don’t have to use a ziploc. At Flight001, I found a more structured clear harder plastic zippered bag that is slightly larger than a ziploc (and holds way more just because of the design). It was inexpensive, and most importanly, TSA APPROVED! I have used mine 15+ times (I travel a lot for work) and have not had one problem.

Maybe a little box of laundry detergent? Travel size diaper wipes. And have your glasses checked out right before you leave, making sure the screws are tight. I also couldn’t go without Q-tips and kleenex. A tiny amount of paper and pens. A few extra garbage bags for dirty/wet clothes….

Wow you pack light!
Maybe tampons, birth control, eye drops(my eyes get so dry when I fly), shampoo?

Definately baby wipes, or some disinfectant wipes so you have more room in your liquid bag. Alcohol wipes too?

I second the suggestion of baby wipes, tampons, tinted moisturizer, and a basic bronzing powder.

I don’t see bras on your list, but I guess that’s assumed. :) As far as clothes, your list looks pretty good, with the exception of a pair of comfortable jeans and a cargo or denim skirt.

Oh, you are definitely bringing a camera, right? What about your cell phone? Don’t forget the charger and the volltage converter. If not, how about a pre-paid phone card?

FI and I have both done a lot of traveling abroad and have learned to pack light.

I love shirts made out of modal-it packs easily, can be easily handwashed and looks nicer when going out for dinner. Maybe a skirt? Doubles for day and evening. Swimsuit coverup?

I would also add making 3 copies of all credit cards and passport info to leave at home, leave with a trusted person and to take with you. I think FI also emailed everything to himself as a backup last trip.

If not taking cell phone, phone numbers of a couple emergency contacts.

Lastly, I don’t know about the converters for Bali, but a lot of the ones they sell in stores actually don’t work bc the outlet is recessed. Might double check Rick Steves website.

Have fun!

Band aid makes this a product called Blister Block, https://www.bandaid.com/couponBlisterBlock.jsp
I’ve found it really helpful when traveling and walking a lot, especially if you dont’ have many pairs of shoes to switch to.

a silk handkerchief to wipe the beads of sweat from the humidity. when you get there, purchase a cute sarong from the market and wear and bright colors. it will look great in the pictures on the beach. if you get a chance, look at peoples pictures on flickr for ideas…i lived in asia, lol. good luck

contact solution doesn’t count towards your maximum for liquids since it’s technically part of a medication.

oh, also if anyone gets motion sickness from rocking boats you might want to bring some dramamine. :)

Yes, as summer said a little bit ago, contact solution and liquid medication don’t count as part of the 1quart bag requirements. You can bring as much as you want (and will fit in your suitcase). Inspectors will complain if you don’t declare it, so the best thing to do is put it in a separate ziploc bag and keep it handy for check-in.

Bali is so much fun! When you visit the Monkey temples, make sure you don’t carry any Yellow key chains or anything yellow, the monkeys will eat it!!

This is a great list! I didn’t know about the contact solution thing either, thanks summer and Amy.

Olay makes disposable face wash cloths (Daily Facials Lathering Cleansing Cloths) that also work as a great washcloth for the rest of your body. The cleanser is dry on the cloth, so they don’t count against your liquids. I love them for traveling.

-MINI-FEBREEZE SPRAY! seriously: with all that backpacking and light load, prob will have to wait in between washes. Also, Ivory bar soap, is good for washing clothes.
-BALI is incredible, you will love it! I wouldn’t count on snagging great shoes though…try Italy for that ;)

Quick dry whatever you can get, shirts, shorts, underwear. I’m used to a super dry climate where everything dries out overnight so when I was backpacking in Chile it surprised me when my underwear wasn’t dry by morning. That wasn’t the most pleasant learning experience. Oh well. You learn faster that way. :-)
Good wool socks and a (light) wool sweater will also be handy.

the contact solution might have to still be sealed…. check into that. You can buy sun screen all over, no need to pack your own unless you have very sensitive skin.

REI sells a little box in their travel section with ketchup-like packets of woolite and a rubber sink stopper. Try and buy everything microfiber or quick-drying or cool-max that you can so that it can dry overnight. I dunno how much sink laundry you did on your last backpacking trip, but cotton doesn’t dry overnight most of the time and linen turns into a wrinkly mess without an iron. Oh, and a microfiber towel, sounds stupid, but some hotels won’t provide beach or pool towels unless you bug them a lot, easier just to bring your own.

PS- You NEED A HAT. And you might have trouble finding shoes that don’t suck. Maybe stick in a pair of black flipflops that don’t look too beat-up in the bag too.

Miss Dahlia- Your packing list looks great! We’re going to Iceland for our honeymoon and I’m planning on packing similarly light- although for colder weather! It’s a challenge when the weather can change so quickly and you need winter hat/gloves and warm clothes/rain jackets, but also sunscreen, short sleeved shirts, etc. I’m determined we can do it though!

I have sensitive skin and am prone to rashes with strange laundry detergent and/or water. I never travel without hydrocortizone cream for itching - rashes, bug bites, whatever.

SKIP the anti-malarial if you are going to bali. even malarone is a serious drug with potentially serious side effects and should not be taken unless you are going out into the jungle. check the CDC website, there is no malaria risk in bali.

sunscreen, bug repellent, band aids, pepto, immodium, advil (brand name Nurofen) you can easily find there.

also, don’t bother with the $100 bills, there are plenty of ATMs on Bali, and that’s where you’ll really get the best rate. carrying around big bills is more of risk than a benefit. there is a gigantic mall in kuta beach with probably 25 ATM machines (and a drug store where you can pick up the stuff you need) and a bunch in ubud, too.

one thing i always pack (and i’m a carry on person, too) is conditioner. i can never find one i like.

another thing to consider packing is a pair of board shorts, those shorts surfers wear. they dry really quickly and are great to throw on over a wet bathing suit, since they don’t get all soggy.

also, you will feel REALLY under dressed and awkward if you show up in singapore in island clothes or sneakers or birkenstocks, esp. if you are going out at night. it’s a very urban, sophisticated place. but there’s tons of shopping!

I second everything suzybrown said… as CDC puts it, there’s no malaria risk in urban areas or resort areas of Bali (and none in Singapore). (http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationIndonesia.aspx#vaccines)
I’d skip packing some of your toiletries (nearly all of which you can get in Bali easily and inexpensively) and add a couple of nice outfits for Singapore, which, as suzy noted, is very cosmopolitan.

I would suggest bringing a small spray bottle filled with peroxide. It came in really handy.

I would bring some cute sundresses. They are light, easy to pack, and you can dress them up or down.
I am a really really light packer too (carry on only), and so usually bringing one or two skirts and then a bunch of little tops is great, since you will go through them, and you can always double up and wear them during the day.
Unless you are doing wilderness/camping adventure honeymoon, you are going to want some cuter little outfits for the evening.

did you guys get travel insurance? it covers flight cancellation, baggage loss or delay, and any medical emergencies and emergency evacuation. As a travel agent, I never leave home without it!

Hmm…. that seems like a pretty thorough list!

I would maybe bring some dramamine just in case you or Mr. Dahlia get a little motion sick.

And maybe some of those little ponchos that are small enough to fit in your purse. Just in case you get caught in the rain.

Definitely bring a Tide stain-stick - those things are life savers!

I also usually bring toilet seat covers and one of those travel rolls of toilet paper whenever I travel. They don’t take up much space but can be very handy.

Oh yeah, and you are bringing a camera I hope! ‘Cause I wanna see some honeymoon pics when you get back :)

Bali is awesome for shopping (and super cheap) so I wouldn’t bring too many clothes at all. A lot of the Australians I met there said they don’t pack any clothes and buy everything there. Also I found that the best exchange rates came from ATMs and they are much more convenient then finding exchange places.

hi just a random stranger from singapore! you could always walk around in birkenstocks, even in town, i it’s fine. you could always walk around in jeans or a simple skirt, as mentioned above. be warned, though, singapore’s been somewhat hit by a heatwave recently, so be prepared for really hot weather unless you’re just going to be shopping in the malls most of the time! your hotel looks like its in the town area, so you could reach the main shopping areas by train in less than fifteen minutes. of course if you’re looking to have a nice dinner do pack some nice clothes, though you could always buy since i assume you’re going to be shopping.

have you ‘firmed your plans in singapore? i’d be more than glad to share the best places in town to shop and dine!

have fun!

I second what Erin said. Make 3 copies of your passports, ID’s, credit cards, etc. Keep one copy on you, leave one at home, and the last set with a trusted person you can call just in case.

I also recommend the smallest size (2 oz.?) of Dr. Bronner’s magic soap- this stuff is super concentrated and works for EVERYTHING- shampoo, body wash, detergent, etc. The scents are pretty strong and in the heat w/bugs I recommend the baby/sensitive skin version without fragrance. It’s a little hippy dippy but it’s really fantastic for trips. You can find it in health food stores like Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Sprouts.

Enjoy!

contact lens solution does not need to fit into your 1 qt. bag. i have carried it many times in my purse through the airport. when at the security checkpoint, make sure to take it out of your bag and make it visible. otherwise you will get held up for not declaring it.

The list looks great!

My only caveat about travelling with just a carry on is that Bali has a TON of absolutely gorgeous and reasonably priced things to buy and if you bring an already jam-packed carry on you won’t have room to bring anything back (I speak from experience, having travelled there as a backpacker a few years ago and having to ship a bunch of stuff home).

On that note, if you do decide to ship anything home, ship it through either: the Bali post office (NOT one of the many shipping stores, which will charge astronomical rates and by the cubic meter rather than the weight of the box), or, if you’re passing through Singapore on your way home, ship it through their postal service, which is significantly cheaper.

Have a fabulous honeymoon!
