About Mrs. Pineapple

Temporary Engagement Bling

April 30th, 2008 @ 11:08 am by Mrs. Pineapple

My engagement ring was custom made to fit the diamond Mr. Pineapple picked out, so we had to send it away to have a wedding band made to match. This makes me sad. I have been without my ring for over 4 weeks now. You would think that being engagement ring free for 4 weeks after being engagement ring free for 23 years would not be so bad. I just love being engaged to Mr. Pineapple and having the ring remind me of how lucky I am every time I look at my hand.

So, I went to Claire’s and got 2 sweet cubic zirconia rings for $6.50. I purchased 2 because they were all fairly ugly and because I wanted Mr. Pineapple to be able to have a hand in the choice. For a while, I wore the first one, but it felt kind of ridiculous. It is so big and there were definitely clouds in my stones.

Here is the first ring:It’s huge! Look at the pseudo bling! My honorary bridesmaid Jacki said “oh wow, look how it has no sparkle!” She was obviously impressed.

Here is option number 2, smaller stones which is good but there are more of them:
This weekend we spent some time with folks we haven’t seen for awhile. All the girls were excited to see my ring. At which point I had to go through the explanation of where my real ring is before they told me how beautiful the fake was. Both rings are too big, they spin and slide around. I cannot wait to get my ring back. It also feels weird to be wearing a ring that is so not me.

Did any of you brides to be have temporary engagement bling?

No temporary engagement ring, but my fiance got my ring sized to a ring I used to wear on my ring finger…. when i lived in 100% humidity Hawaii and was 15 lbs heavier! whoops! I had to take it to the jeweler to resize it. It took 2 hours! My hand felt so NAKED and LONELY!! My sympathy for you for 4 weeks!! Mad props to you for having a sense of humor about it. Any of your rings that are sentimental to you fit that finger?

When I first was engaged, I would take off my ring every night and once I forgot to put on my ring before I went to work and I didn’t realize that I didn’t have it until I got there. So I made a ring out of paper clips so my hand wouldn’t feel naked. :P

Yes! I have a temporary ring because my real ring was custom designed and backordered, so I haven’t even seen the real ring (but I will soon). I like my fake ring, and it’s white gold and white topaz, but it’s obviously not a diamond, so when people are trying to be polite and compliment the ring, I rush to tell them it’s my “fake engagement ring.” I guess I want people to know that I know it’s not a diamond.

Not that my real ring is even diamond. We didn’t like the idea of that, and it’s just not me. I can’t wait to get my REAL ring.

freshman year, we went to a halloween party on beeler and he asked me to marry him with one of those plastic spider rings. =) super cute. 5 years later, we were at a bar (we’re really a classy couple, let me tell you) and he asked again with another one of those plastic spider rings. i wore it around the house until he replaced it with my real one — but i still have my first two engagement rings!

My ring is also bespoke and when we had to send it away for her to make the band to match, it was gone for 5 weeks. I didn’t have a replacement, just was naked! It wasn’t fun. :-)

My FI proposed on Christmas Day– the day before we left for Egypt! It was about two sizes too big and I was worried about losing it in a land far away before he even had it insured, so I switched rings in the airport and wore my silver purity ring (my parents gave it to me several years ago) while we were overseas.

I’m used to having something there, so the other ring helped, but it was so surreal to have to give it up the day after! I think sometimes I forgot I was engaged, hehe :)

I’ll be leaving my ring at the jeweler next week for at least (?!) two weeks to have my wedding band made as well. I joked to my fiance’ that I would like a fake. I thought he’d go on down to Claire’s and get me a fake similar to yours. But then Zales was having a 30% off of the 50% off price on tons of stuff and he picked me up a diamond and sapphire ring marked down from $130 to $40. I looove it! So then I started wearing it on my right hand….until I figured out that I was going to go through right-hand-sapphire-ring withdrawals, so I put it away until the time comes I have to give up my pretty engagement ring. I’m so glad to hear I’m not completely abnormal for “needing” a fake! haha :)

We shopped for a ring for 5 weeks after we got engaged, so I was completely ringless. When I told people I was engaged, they looked at my finger and exclaimed “but you don’t have a ring!” As if that is required for being engaged. :)

I should have bought a humongo CZ fake ring!

I did something similar… we got engaged on Christmas Eve and we flew to Thailand for two weeks on December 27th. There was no time to get my ring sized so I couldn’t take it with me, but I wanted a ring on that finger, damnit! So, I wore a toering on my finger! (It was all I had and there was no chance to go shopping over Christmas.)

Glad it’s not just me who hated the idea of that finger being bare!

When he proposed he had already ordered the ring but it was not made yet, so he proposed with a ring pop. I didn’t wear it though. Needless to say I will keep it forever.

husband proposed to me with a ring that was a half size too big and once i found out that it would take 5 days before i got it back, i went straight to walmart (classy… ha!) and picked up a cz. no way was i going to deal with a lonely naked finger! :)

My ring was also custom made, and as my fiance wanted me to have a part in designing it, he proposed with the paper info sheet on the diamond he’d picked out, and a beautiful sterling silver and double black pearl ring (he said they reminded him of two peas in a pod… like us… AWWW!). He said he thought about getting me a CZ stand-in, but they were all so big as to dwarf my (not small) real diamond, and he also wanted something I could wear again in the future. And he picked so well! I loved my first e-ring so much I almost hated to see it leave my hand. But my real e-ring is pretty darned awesome too! I’m just glad we had the matching wedding band made at the same time, so I don’t have to give it up now that I finally do have it. :)

i was without my ring for a week while it was being sized, and i HATED it! my fiance joked that he was so worried that our relationship was tied up in a piece of jewelry, but we both agreed that the ring means a lot to us - we’re on the younger end (21) and so we feel like people don’t take us seriously. A real ring seems to make people realize we’ve thought this through, and are serious about our relationship. i didn’t want to talk about the wedding while my ring was gone, because i didn’t want to explain where my ring was!

I bought the same exact ring at Claire’s when my ring was being fixed for 2 weeks. I had a really awkward moment at work when someone grabbed my hand and started going on about how gorgeous it was… eeek!

@Michelle: I don’t wear a lot of jewelry and the only other ring I have is from my ex, not sure Mr. P would appreciate that ;)

@rebecca: That’s so cute! If it was a party on Beeler between 1999 and 2003, you were probably at sister Pineapple’s house.

@MissBanana: I would have felt strange telling people too sans ring. My ring finger is the very first place people look when they hear I am engaged.

@futuremrswecker: you should have it preserved in an airtight box like they do with bouquets ;)

I just bought a fake one this weekend! The first time I had to go without my engagement ring (while the wedding band was being custom made) I just sucked it up, and actually enjoyed wearing some of my old jewlery again. But this time (yes they messed the wedding band up so I had to send it away AGAIN) i couldn’t stand not having it, especially since we are going to a wedding this weekend. I am so glad I am not the only one!

Thank you proving that I am in fact sane.

Everyone looks at me crooked when I tell them my fake BLING plan.

I did have a fake engagement ring for a while, because I used to have to walk to work in a very sketchy part of town, and would always have nightmares of being held up… It was the same as the second one, as it’s very similar to my real engagement ring. But I wore it a lot, so it changed color, and I had to get rid of it, because it just looked way too fake lol.

I’m now spending the semester in Spain, and I just left my engagement ring at home, because I’m too afraid something will happen to it here. My mom gave me a fake engagement ring she had for me to bring here, but it made my finger itch… so I just go bare now. I can’t wait to get home so I can wear my ring again! I miss it! It’s been like 4 months now! Eek!

Eek, I just went through the same thing. We went to have a custom band made and in the process discovered the original custom ring had some casting flaws. A month later I finally have my ring back but it felt so strange without it. While the original was in the shop I wore a skinny little silver and gold band I already owned in its place because I didn’t want to buy anything new to fit that finger. The entire month we had strangers addressing us as husband and wife because they just assumed it was a full wedding band.

i saw these: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11430785

and thought of you with all your copper stuff. obviously it would be very expensive to use them on napkins for all of your guests, but i thought they might be cute for your wedding party / immediate family / just you and mr. p? they could double as gifts, too.

just a thought. (i figured it would be best to post this on a more recent post instead of the one with the etsy copper stuff so you’d be more likely to see it)
