Cakes Galore

May 1st, 2008 @ 2:14 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

While looking for images of cake ideas, I came to the realization that I like almost everything. You’d think that would make it easy on me, but try to mesh everything together and it’d look horrible.

I know I want a fondant cake because I think it looks stunning.  I’m aware that not many people like fondant, but luckily my baker adds flavor to the fondant. As for the colors I will most likely go with brown, pink and ivory, or maybe just brown and ivory. I haven’t even started to think about the rest of the cake, but I think it’s time now with the wedding less than 2 months away.

Here are some of the images I’ve collected throughout the wedding process:

I heart all sorts of bows and not to mention cute dots - source
I love contrasting colors - source

Floral patterns, lines, dots, embellishments… I love them all . -source

Having edible lace on a cake is such a great idea. It looks stunning too.
I also love the mixture of simplicity paired with a bold piece. -source

You’ve probably seen all these cake designs before. source

I love the idea of having shapes made with fondant. source

Do I want a round cake or a square one? A pattern or simple? Embellishments or no? 1 flavor or 3?

In order to get all the elements I like into one cake, I think I will attempt to design the cake… wish me luck :)

Did you design your cake? For those of you who are married, did it come out like you envisioned?

I love the cake that is in the 3rd group, top right. I like how it has a different design detail on each layer. Probably because my cake had the same thing. I think it provides for an elegant contrast. You could add color to it too.

I loved my cake design, way more than I thought. I didn’t put a ton of thought into the cake, but when I saw it at the reception I couldn’t get over how beautiful it looked!

One note about stacked cakes is that they make it a lot harder to slice correctly and people end up getting mangled pieces of cake without frosting. I ended up having a tiny amount of space between each tier instead of stacked.

I LOVED my cake. LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVED it! I too didn’t think I would care that much about the cake, but it was one of my favorite parts of the day. We semi-designed our cake. We saw different pieces of designs that we liked in pictures at our bakers and put them together. I gave her some direction on the color and she really made it amazing. It was absolutely perfect and SOOOOO tasty. We had three tiers, square, fondant. Beautiful. There are plenty of pictures of it on our website. :)
One note on fondant. I too loved the look but wasn’t a fan of the taste 1) flavored fondant is MUCH better, our baker used that too and 2) there will still be a crumb coat of buttercream, or whatever, underneath, so it people don’t like fondant it’s not like they won’t have any icing. Totally loved my cake though. It far exceeded my expectations!

The cake in the top left of the “Floral patterns, lines, dots, embellishments” group is the inspiration for my cake, I LOVE it! We’re using top two of those tiers (the diamonds and stripes) and another tier from a cake my baker has made in the past. It’s going to be in purples, blue and gold. I’m SO excited.

we’re having a scalloped shaped cake that i seen in martha stewarts’ weddings (she has a lot of good designs). we’re actually having two cakes b/c we couldn’t decide on the two designs we liked. so one is a whimiscal earthy design and the other is a beachy/ undersea design. satisfy our love of the land & sea =)

Wedding cakes are becoming more and more stylish with a beautiful array of pastel colors. They all have their own identity. Gorgeous!

The cake that is on the top right in the third group was made on Food Network Challenge last night! It was one of the entries for the “mystery couple wedding cake” challenge! :) But it didn’t win.
