About Mrs. Jasmine

So Sari I Punned

May 2nd, 2008 @ 9:25 am by Mrs. Jasmine

Mr. Jasmine and I decided very early on that we didn’t want a bridal party. For one, a bridal party is not usually customary in South Asian weddings (although they are becoming more and more popular). We were also having a difficult time deciding who we would choose among our family and friends. It just seemed easier to go without one.

But I did want a way to recognize some of my dearest friends on my wedding day. I decided to offer some of my closest friends custom made saris to wear to the wedding. Each girl chose a color and emailed me her measurements. My aunt in India custom ordered the saris and they arrived last week with matching bangles for each girl. I also ordered one for my wonderful wedding coordinator.

They are so beautiful and I think my girls are going to be absolutely radiant in them. I’m also happy that I can share a special part of my culture with them.

Are you doing anything special to recognize your friends or introduce them to your culture?

Those are beautiful Jasmine! That’s so great of you to share a part of your culture with your friends. We’re not doing anything very special except having a Chinese banquet for the rehearsal dinner to introduce Mr. C’s side of the family to traditional Chinese cuisine. Though I would take saris over food any day. :)

The sari material looks absolutely gorgeous! Once your closest girlfriends are all wearing the same thing, aren’t they your bridal party? I think that’s how any American guests (if there are any) will interpret it.

That’s a great idea! I would be so psyched to wear a beautiful sari like that in a friend’s wedding.

Horrible pun ;)

I’m probably doing something similar - my tentative plan is to have my bridesmaids wear matching saris for the ceremony and then coordinating dresses for the reception (because I’m wearing a sari for the ceremony and some kind of designer dress for the reception - I wouldn’t feel comfortable in a lehnga, and I don’t want to wear a traditional white wedding dress, either.)

i have a couple of different outfits (sari, lehenga, salwar kameez, etc) that friends have brought back as gifts from India and I love them all. Your friends will be thrilled and I think they will look beautiful.

What a lovely way to incorporate your culture and your best friends at the same time. I wish American culture had something a little more exciting than corsages to honor important people.

Ok, that’s weird, I clicked into comments to write “That is so lovely!” only to find the last two commenters already said that…

But really: lovely. Beatiful fabrics & a very sweet idea.

These saris are so beautiful. What a wonderful idea. I wanted my friends to wear saris in the colour of my theme but one of them had already bought her outfit. My family however matched beautifully with shades of torquise and blues and greens to match my peacock theme.

Miss Jasmine -
Would you happen to know of an area in Los Angeles where there are a lot of indian shops? I’m looking for Sari fabric, but can’t find if there’s a “little india” here or not….
xoxo

@danathebride: You want to go to Artesia, which is the “Little India” of Los Angeles. There are tons and tons of sari shops there. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM or email me!
