With This Ring…

May 2nd, 2008 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

Last January, I met my jeweler to figure our the details of the wedding band I wanted to get made. Basically I wanted a reproduction of a ring I previously had seen, but I was opting for Moissanite stones and miniature diamonds (from an old ring my step-mother gave me).

A couple of weeks later, the jeweler called to tell me that my wax mold was ready. So I went to check it out and approve the model they had made. It looked good I guess (it was hard to envision a beautiful ring with blue and purple wax) but the detailing was what I wanted. (I apologize for the blurriness)

One month after I approved the wax model, I received an email that my ring was ready… oh how exciting! I went during my lunch break because I was so anxious to see it, and let me say that it was absolutely B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Not to mention it was HUGE! - bigger than what I thought it would be.

I love my trinity. It’s made of 2 pear shaped moissanite stones and 1 round one.

I decided to go the moissanite route for two reasons: 1- it’s Eco-friendly and 2- the cost factor of diamonds. A diamond ring like the one I got made would have cost a good 12 - 15K!

Square bottom. I think that’s my favorite part. It’s unique and I love it.

Sides have a slant on each side. Adds detailing to the ring.

I don’t know whether it’s considered bad luck to actually try the ring on, but if that’s the case, I will have lots of bad luck because I keep trying it on and showing the world. Here is my ring on my wedding finger.

When I first told my family that I wanted a Moissanite ring, they all looked at me with this confused expression on their faces. I explained the whole thing and some were reluctant to the idea of buying a man-made stone. Once I showed my family the ring, they couldn’t believe how much it shined. I mean bling bling in your eyes kinda shine. I guess they’ve changed their views on Moissanite now. Hurray!

Did you get your ring made? Were you happy with the results?

Ok - first off - your ring is GORGEOUS!!!! LOVE IT!

My fiance had my engagement ring made - he designed it himself and I love it - it’s hard to explain, but it’s sort of a 3 stone mock-tension setting and it is white gold fading into yellow at the bottom. It also has a design on the front (what ever you call the part that you look down on if the ring is flat on a table)
I know it sounds weird… but it’s absolutely perfect and I love it.

I think we are going to have our wedding bands made by the same guy

I think it’s beautiful! What a great way to avoid the possibility of a “blood diamond.”

I’m very intrigued on the man-made stone. I love the shine of diamonds, but hate the cost. My FH got me a beautiful diamond set in platinum, but I hate to think how much he spent on it. I’d really like to get a platinum band for my wedding band, but with diamonds it’s way out of our price range. This might be a great alternative. Thanks for the education!

My center stone is Moissanite. It is beautiful and everyone comments “wow” when the see it.

when we started to look at rings, my fi’s co-worker suggested Moissanite. His wife has a Moissanite. I was really suprised at the quality of a “man-made” diamond. I fell in love with it and made a huge impact.
we did not tell our family or friends about the Moissanite. Diamonds are REALLY expensive and I didn’t want us going to debt just b/c he wanted me to wear something on my finger forever. i’d rather put that money towards an investment like our house.

I complete recommend Moissanite!!

i have an asscher asha diamond
http://www.betterthandiamond.com/
and i love it. it’s gorgeous and NO one can tell the difference, not even jewelers unless they look. We didn’t tell anyone either.
The only reasons we got the asha instead of the moissanite was it was less expensive and at the time, i couldnt’ find and asscher cut moissanite. months before, for christmas, my husband had bought me a moissanite 1/2 carat necklace that we used to check out their stones– it’s gorgeous– i wear it all the time.

Wow! It’s beautiful, but seriously, it better not be bad luck to try on the wedding band before the wedding. I try mine on way too much. I just love how it looks with my engagement ring… we didn’t design ours, at least not from scratch because I have no creativity of my own. =) But I love my rings, so it’s all good!

you were extremely smart to go with Moissanite! That is one of the most beautiful rings I have EVER seen! I don’t think my DH had heard of it at the time and when you mentioned how much it would have cost had you gone the “real” route, well, yup, that’s about what he paid. He designed it himself (that’s the part I’m most in love with), it’s a tension set brilliant with three stones on each side for a total of 7–the month were were engaged. I think that the cost was upped considerably because he purchased conflict-free diamonds. they are great politically, but poor on the pocket.

wow. i love it!

ever since i learned about moissanite i have really liked it.

buying retail diamonds is ridiculously expensive and i would never feel safe wearing one in this city or anywhere else for fear or losing it somehow.

smart choice.

I have a similar (but not too similar!) setting, except the pear shaped stones are emeralds. Congrats on your beautiful ring!

Yay for conflict free diamonds! I am so happy whenever I see brides who realize that you don’t have to prove how much love exists between the two of you based on how much money you spend on the ring. No one will ever know that a starving child in Africa didn’t dig it up, and if you ever want an upgrade, you will never feel guilty!

We went with a center stone moissanite for my engagement ring to avoid the issue of conflict/blood diamonds. I could not be happier. Most people we encounter (including jewelers) don’t recognize a difference between moissanite and diamonds, and after being told what the stone is, they seem to get excited about our choice. So much sparkle with it too.

I applaud your choice of moissanite! i have a beautiful moissanite engagement ring and honestly wouldn’t go for a diamond one (for similar eco-friendly and humanity-friendly reasons) any day. everyone has commented on how beautiful the stone is - no one has been able to tell the difference. highly recommend it.

My fiance just bought me a moissanite engagement ring. At first we were looking at other gemstones because of the eco impact of diamonds but i secretly still wanted a diamond. I was sad, like i dont want to be broke or get a gem i dont want or hurt people in the process. First, we looked at canadian diamonds and read how exploitative the diamond mining industry is regardless of conflict or not. Then we looked at lab created diamonds and they were almost as expensive and I felt like, “why are we going into debt for a ring?” Plus we already own a home together and have a baby. Not the conventional couple. So i would rather spend money on a vacation or catching up on bills. Plus the price is ridiculous. I would feel real superficial with an expensive ring and a whole lot of debt. Honestly even the few hundred for the Moissanite made me feel guilty. I almost had an anxiety attack when he was placing the order.

I didn’t get it yet but i’m worried it may look green. Does it have yellow or greenish tint? I don’t know if i ever seen a moissanite, it seems like everyone is trying to pass it off, but i would rather tell people. I honestly don’t want people to think i contributed to the blood diamond trade. Does it really sparkle? I love sparkle!

@cherry: Hey Cherry… to answer your question, I compare my moissonite ring next to a diamond ring and there is rarely a difference. If you have no light - it may have a yellowish tint - but diamonds have that too…

And sparkle - oh my… YES it really does. As much as a diamond. My step-mother was really impressed. I think you will like it. Really.

I didnt pass it as a diamond. I told people the real deal and they seemed impressed. Especially when I told them that I did want a blood diamond. (I mean I have small ones on my ring - but they are for an old ring my step-mother gave me.) I love my ring so much. I cant wait to wear it… officially

Your ring is beautiful, no doubt about it. However, you said you can’t see a difference, but clearly in the last photo your stones have a yellow tint compared to the diamonds next to it. Moissanite does have a yellowish tint to it, always. Regardless, it’s beautiful and eco-friendly. I applaud you.
