Tables Need To Dress Up Too…

May 3rd, 2008 @ 10:28 pm by Mrs. Flamingo

When I checked out our venue we only had one option for our table linens - white tablecloth with a classic ivory overlay. At first I thought it was fine. Ivory matched our wedding colors, but having a white tablecloth, ivory overlay, ivory napkin and white plates… I have a feeling it might look washed out.  So now I’m looking for table covers to add that extra glam.

I looked at some local rental companies but they are charging ridiculous amounts (15$ per table). At that price I might as well buy them myself. Now I don’t know if I should DIY them by buying yards of material and cutting it myself, or if I should buy them already made.

There are several types of table linens (and I was quite surprised):

Taffeta - Dupioni - Sheer Patterned Overlay

Pintuck - Satin

I’m looking either for actual table cloths or table overlays to go over my white linens. I think having a brown accent will really bring out the colors of our theme.

Do you know of any website that offers inexpensive table linens/covers?

I found relatively cheap linens from Dove Linens (http://www.dovelinen.com/). They were shipped to my house and then after my wedding I just shipped them back. You don’t even have to clean them!

Man I wish that it would only be $15 here. I’m in Ottawa and they are $26 each!

Miss Flamingo - are you planning on using the brown table cloths with chivaris or are you using chair covers?

I am using ivory chair covers and am debating if it would look “off” if I have brown table cloths. Of course, if you’re lucky and have chivaris, you don’t have that problem!

I wont be having Chivari chairs… just the chairs that are provided with my reception site. I wont be covering them because the chairs are pretty - which is rare.

I have a piece of advice, that comes by way of my MOH’s wedding not my own. She DIY’d linens, found them cheap, sorry that I can’t remember where. The only problem was making sure they were pressed. I have nightmares from the night before her wedding, where we turned her suite into an ironing factory sweatshop with every ironing board and iron we could round up (it was a pretty big wedding). Not fun, and way too much stress on the bride. Do it well in advance, or factor in the cost of getting them professionally pressed when you do the rent vs. DIY cost-benefit analysis.

That said, she found gorgeous brown linens, and the benefit of DIY is that everyone in the wedding party got to take one home.

I’m crazy so I made mind of that same pintucked chocolate fabric above. I added pink ribbons that trailed down the sides of the table. It was easy and fairly cheap. But then you’ve got to organize getting them to/from venue.

Making full 132″ round tablecloths would be pretty expensive (7+ yards of extra-wide fabric) and time consuming (round edges are harder to hem). I considered doing it anyway, since I couldn’t find rental linens that were what I wanted, but in the end, I decided it wasn’t worth it and I plan to rent plain colored linens and make a square topper to add texture or pattern.

For an ~90″ square topper, you would need about 5 yards of fabric for each cloth. If you have 45″ fabric, it will end up a little less than 90″ square after hemming, but you wouldn’t have to do as much cutting. Basically, you would just cut two 90″ lengths of the fabic and sew them together along the selvedge, then hem the edges up a little, so you don’t have raw ends. And if you can find a fabric less than $3/yard, then you would come out less than $15 a piece. If you find a wider fabric, you will have to cut the width as well, or buy more yardage and make the squares larger.

In terms of buying them, 132″ round tablecloths aren’t cheap, but look for places that sell wholesale to the industry. Here’s one: http://www.wholesale-table-linens.com/index.html

Try Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Linens n Things, or Crate and Barrel for smaller squares and rounds. You can also look at places like Marshall’s/Homegoods or TJ Maxx, but it is hard to get enough pieces to match.

And for those of you with deep pockets, here’s a place that will custom make tablecloths for you: http://www.customlinen.com/index.cfm

Hope that helps!

Just a thought, chocolate brown table RUNNERS are less fabric and thus cheaper! (and also DIY-able). =)
Or maybe chocolate brown place mat types to bring in the color.

BBJ linens seems to get great reviews on The knot. You may want to check them out.

If it ends up being cheaper to buy them, maybe you could just do that and sell them on here. My wedding is in September and my color palate is similar to yours so if you have enough table cloths I would be interested in purchasing them and I’m sure there are others who would feel the same.

Unfortunately, linen is going to cost about the same no matter where you get it. If you find a cheaper price online, by the time you add in shipping, it’s the same as a local place. The best thing is to plan early for linen, which most people don’t, and save for it. It really does make the difference in the room.

$15 per table? in CT linens like that would be closer to $50 per table. the boring cotton ones are $20.

Hello, hope you’re doing well. Now, I couldn’t tell you a place where you can get cheap linens; however, I can tell you that it is cheaper to buy them yourself but consider what you will do afterwards. I see someone already offered to buy them from you. That’s awesome! You might also want to consider selling them to another rental company or share them with friends soon to be newly weds. Honestly, my mother bought the majority of our linens, so I can see where you’re coming from. She’s kept them to share with others. We have plenty of quincineras in our family. Also, I’m having a meeting with a linen company this week; perhaps, I can ask her to help.

2 suggestions:
the cheapest would probably be to DIY–I would skip Fabricville and go to those super cheap fabric shops on St-Hubert (near all the wedding dresses) or on St-Laurent (I’m sure there are others, I just can’t think where)–and i agree w/ fatafelice that smaller square overlays will be easier!

Otherwise, you might want to check some of the local restaurant supply stores–the one I know of that seems to be GREAT is on Parc just above Mont-Royal–it’s amazing!

I didn’t rent linens, but I did get chair sashes from this online company:

http://www.fabulousevents.info/

Like Dove Linens, mentioned above, they Fed Exed the sashes to me a day or so before and I sent them back a day or two after. The company was very easy to work with and happily sent me fabric samples. They have a pretty good selection =)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I guess I forgot to mention that yes, I want to make a smaller square overlay… otherwise it will be too expensive.

As for the price, i never realized that linens would be more expensive than the 15-20$ per table. I guess in a way Im lucky, though I still think its expensive I will diy them.

@musingsfromhere: I love having a montreal person to help me out… thanks so much for the help :)

I used linentablecloth.com for our rehearsal linens. The purchase cost about the same as renting, but now I can re-sell them afterwards. I’m really happy with the weight and quality.
