Mrs. Toucan's Picture
Mrs. Toucan, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Full-time Research Assistant, Part-time Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Actuary Engagement Date: February 18, 2007 Wedding Date: June 7, 2008 Blogging Since: November 07, 2007 Venue: St. Catherine of Genoa, Jin Asian Cuisine Restaurant About Me: I’m a Gemini to the extreme. On one side, I’m a girly girl. I read countless bridal and fashion magazines, and have an obsession with keeping up with the latest Hollywood gossip. On the other side, I’m a sports fanatic. Despite being a full-time bride-to be, full-time research assistant, and part-time student, I’m also a full-time Red Sox fan from spring training to October, and a full-time Patriots fan from mini-camp to February. I devote almost as much time researching my for fantasy football team as researching for our wedding!
About Mrs. Toucan

On Friday, I had my hair and makeup trial with Lypor*! I was really excited, because I haven’t had my hair done since….err… high school prom?Anyway, here’s the obligatory “Before” picture:

Miss Toucan sans makeup, sans hair product.

Since I really didn’t know what I wanted to do with my hair, Lypor decided to do my makeup first, so that at the end, we could try as many hairstyles as time would allow. I told Lypor that I wanted a mostly natural look, but I wasn’t afraid of eye makeup, and that maybe we could go more dramatic with the eyes.

Miss Toucan is staring at you. (Note: one eye has false lashes and the other eye does not)

Lypor suggested since we were going more a little more dramatic with the eyes, that I try false eyelashes. Despite having pretty full eyelashes, mine are actually pretty short. You can see the biggest difference in the profile shots:

Normal vs Fake eyelash

I wasn’t fully convinced to use falsies because I’ve never worn them before, so Lypor left them on one eye for the entire trial (you will notice lopsided eyes in all my hair pictures!).

After the makeup was done, it was on to the hair!

I am a dork and took pictures of the hair trial through the mirror during the entire trial.

I really thought I wanted to do a down-do or half-up half-down, so we started with the down-do first (plus it’s the easiest to start with).

Hair option #1

It felt really glamorous, but at the same time, for some reason, it felt like too much. Lypor suggested that if I chose this look, I might want to trim my shorter front layer a few inches so that weird curl on the right-side of the picture fell better. Lypor also felt that possibly this do would be too much, and suggested that we pull at least half of it back so that you can see my face.

In between styles, here I am being annoying and taking pictures from the chair again.

Hair option #2

I really liked that my hair was out of my face, yet I still had some of my hair down, but we had one more hairstyle to try…

In between hairstyles again…

The up-do:

Hair option #3

I was actually really surprised that I ended up liking this one the best! The back is a little messy because this was the 3rd hairstyle of the day, but it will be much neater the day of. The other reason why I think I’ll end up going with this style is that both my wedding dress and my qipao have lower backs, and an up-do would probably give both dresses extra drama.

After the trial, I took more pictures when I got home. Lypor didn’t use the zoom on my camera and took pictures literally less than a foot away from my face, so the unkindly light + the flash so close to my face didn’t show what a great job she actually did on my makeup.

Pictures by the window at my parents’ house
(Note: Little Sister Toucan is a goober and loves to pop up into my pictures).

Here in these pictures, you can see that the makeup is much more natural looking than some of the pictures above. All in all I was relieved that I had a great trial! I’m still surprised that I ended up liking the up-do the best since I usually don’t like to wear my hair up. Though, I guess it is kind of nice to look different from how you normally look on your wedding day. :)

What do you think? Which did you like best?

*Note: Lypor’s website only works in Internet Explorer, and not Mozilla Firefox.

first off, i love the fake eyelashes. they really flatter the shape f your eye(s) and make the whole look pop. :)

and secondly, i really really like the half up, half down hair option. i think it’s gorgeous and flatters your face most. but, if you’re really all for the up do, it looks very nice too.

I know it’s like bride cliche, but the updo looks the best. And definately use the false lashes because they bring out your eyes and you will be happy you did it when you get your pro pics back.

I say updo. Totally classy. This look really complements your face and looks more understated/natural than with your hair down.

I love the false lashes on you. They make your eye(s) pop and glamor! My favorite is also the updo. Though you look great in all the pictures!

I LOVE you in the updo. It’s so very elegant, and you won’t have to worry about your curls drooping/falling/getting pastered against your back after a night of dancing. I also love the false eyelashes!

I like the up do…more “grown up”…for some reason I always associate down curly do’s with children… :?

*false eyelashes* DO IT! :) oh and i absolutely heart #3 (similar to what I did and it stayed in place all night even while shaking it on the dance floor) but I think I like #2 on you. Maybe put it out for a vote?

Hot stuff!!!! I like style #2…but then again I could be bias because that looks very similar to my hairstyle on my wedding day! =) But I love the makeup job…not too much, but just enough to highlight your great facial structure! Me like!

I love the updo and definitely go with the false eyelashes, very glamourous! I love the little bit of height in your hair in the profile view.

@jpang: Nope, not looking - I’ve already booked Lypor. :) Thanks for the link though. :)
@V: I, too, liked it because I looked more “grown up.” I think I look pretty young for my age, so I felt a little less “child bride.” ;)
@Emily: I really liked the height too… I’m a little shorty, so I need all the height I can get. Also, the front picture of the updo is actually a really terrible picture of me, and I think the angle of my head is tilted weird, but actually I got a little height added from the front view too!

@GetMarried4Less:hehe, I actually am getting the eyelashes. I forgot to mention that in the post. It just took me some time to get used to. And after seeing these pictures, I was sold! :)

You have such pretty hair— all 3 looks are gorgeous but 3 is definitely the most “bride-y”. You are going to look beautiful!

Option 3 looks incredibly pretty and classic. I tend to think that with a lower back it is more dramatic to have the hair up. But option 1 is pretty too. The false eyelashes definite add a little oomph!

You look gorgeous. I definitely vote for the updo and the false eyelashes (we Asian ladies need all the help we can get in this department). Could you wear the updo for the wedding dress, then switch to a half-down style for the qipao (just to get both styles in there?)?

I love #3! you look great! That’s the problem of being asian, makeup can be tough to get the “wow” factor. Lypor did a great job!

She did an awesome job! I like the idea of half up, but more practically I would go with #3. It’s more classy and you don’t have to worry about your curls getting all messed up. You are so lucky, I need to find someone that good in the Bay Area still!

Love them all! Very elegant! I would say #3 for a more classic look and #2 for a more flirty, playful look. Either way, you can’t lose!

You look beautiful. What a success!

I love the falsies the most. They do so much for you!

I love 1, 2 and 3, but with a low back I would go for 3 for drama too :)

I love love the fake eyelashes and they don’t look fake at all.. Also, I usually love hair when it’s down, but your up-do really really brings out your features. I’m a big fan- question, did you have to pay for several different hairstyles, or was it a one time fee… looks great!

@vailbride: It was a one time fee. Lypor books 1.5 to 2 hours for a hair and makeup consultation. If you do go over 2 hours though, there is an extra charge. I didn’t mention this in the post, and perhaps I should have, but the most amazing part of the trial was the fact that Lypor did 3 styles in 1 hour!

SO BRIDAL! Love the updo! DEFINITELY go with fake Eyelashes! I’d feel naked without! Plus, you dont have to wear as much mascara (if any) so you can avoid smeared mascara!!!
