NOT My Smartest Move…

May 5th, 2008 @ 11:15 am by Miss Hydrangea

Sunday was my FFIL’s birthday, so Mr. H and I spent the day at his parents’ house. While Mr. H worked on his car, FFIL H and my FBILs worked on a playground for Mr. H’s nieces. I took over and played with Heidi, Mr. H’s oldest niece (who is two), outside all day so that her mom could get some things done around the house. We rode around on the wagon, rode around on her bike, chased each other in the yard and had a really fun time, just the two of us. While I wore a long sleeved light jacket so I wouldn’t get tan lines for my bridal portraits, I completely ignored my face. Not a good thing.

I now look somewhat like this:

(Image from here)

Ok, it’s a bit of an exaggeration, except for the tip of my nose. I’ve always been a person who tanned in tanning beds (horrible, I know) but for the past year and a half I have quit the fake baking to save my skin for my future. I had realized how bad it was for me, how much it was costing me, and, finally, got use to my paleness and really started to embrace it.

Unfortunately, because I used to tan, I was also used to going in the sun at the beginning of spring/summer and not having to worry about the burn. I haven’t learned my lesson yet.

My main concern, now, is, what in the world do I do to prevent myself from some major peeling before I have to take pro pics in four days.

Any suggestions?

Ocean Potion! I have sworn by this product forever…. it is a lotion with a TON of aloe vera in it- lather up and stay out of the sun… you should be tan and burn-free soon.

(And in the future… use a tinted moisturizer with a high level of SPF…. and don’t forget to REAPPLY thoughout the day.)

Good luck

I burn very easily even when sunscreen is applied so afterwards I always use the bottles of aloe that you can get by the sunscreen in stores. The one I use is green gel but you might want to get more of a lotion one for your face. Also a few days after i grease up I start to use luberderm instead of the the aloe, the one for sensitive dry skin. I usually get alittle peel but I lube up so much that my skin is to hydrated to peel a lot. Also drink a lot of water.

also, fyi…I have sensitive skin and had an allergic reaction to the after sun cooling gels that you get at drugstores.

growing up in Florida and being Irish makes me very familiar with the burn and peel. I don’t have a favorite lotion, but I do hate the gels. Just make sure when you put the lotion on your skin is cool to the touch. If it isn’t you will make things worse, sealing in the heat by clogging your pores with lotion.

I second that plug for Ocean Potion. And you can use vinegar to take the sting out (although doesn’t smell the greatest…). Good luck!

Tons of aloe vera

Vitamin E Oil is very moisturizing and healing for peeling or skin that seems like it might peel…you can get it at the drugstore. It’s very soothing.

i’d suggest the real deal aloe vera plant. All the gels are just a derivative with large water content. I’m a redhead who grew up in southern california, so I had my share of awful burns. get the actual plant, slice the leaves and rub that on. it’s not pleasant - pretty slimy and dries oddly, but i swear it takes the red out in under 24 hours and i’ve never peeled after uing that. good luck!

You need to hydrate. However, beware of slathering on lotion–this will lock in the heat and slow the healing process. Aloe Vera is the way to go. Light moisturizer and water.

Boil a pot of tea and then put a washrag in it and put it on your skin. It feels warm in the beginning but it cools down, which is nice, and the tea has some kind of therapeutic property.

I’m a “ghost” so I know all about those nasty burns. [Irish skin] I use tons of Aloe Vera gel or lotions. Since your pics are in a few days, go with a lotion and be sure to bring it with you.
Aloe Vera will speed the process of peeling or prevent peeling all together. And in the future, invest in a face cream with SPF 15+ that you’ll apply in the morning. Many liquid foundations will come with this. Saves you from needing to remember to put sunscreen on your face!

I’d like to second the “go straight to the plant” option if you can. I’m in the “always burns, never tans” category and there’s really nothing better than the pure gooey goodness from the aloe plant itself for a sunburn.

Aloe vera! If you can’t get it from the plant, buy a bottle of the lotion and keep it in your fridge. It’ll be nice and cold that way, which is soothing and brings the temperature down a little.

Also - hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Kind of gross, but plain yogurt. It is cooling and soothing and will take the red out fast.

Noxzema and aloe! I first apply the aloe, and then noxzema. Do not wipe off! It works as a heavy duty moisturizer. This combination has worked more then once for me!

Lotion, Lotion, Lotion, to keep the slightly damaged skin from being dried out and expoliate to get rid of the damages, pealing skin. Use several types of expoliants. A large particle one (you will find this in a lot of cleansers like Nutregena and Oil of Olay) and a fine particle such as the micro dermabrasian type that you see with the little massage like tools. You don’t need the tool, just the product.

Also, Tropicana’s aftersun is great because it hydrates really well adn helps repair the lightly damaged skin to so that you keep your tan and don’t peal.

i’m going to suggest skII mask. it smells like poo, but it does wonders. you can find it at saks & bloomingdales. for a cheaper option, try extra-virgin olive oil– leave on skin for 2 minutes. or honey, leave on for 20 minutes. also, using glycerin & rosewater to wash your instead of your normal facial cleanser may help. good luck!!

After this, definitely get in the habit of wearing a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen every day!! ( I love Laura Mercier or Creme de la Mer Tinte). Put it on as part of your morning makeup routine, or when you brush your teeth so you can’t forget it! Your skin (and future hubby!) will thank you!

Moisturise a lot (like, every few hours) and drink lots of water. Good luck! :)

my bro is extremely fair and not diligent with the SPF. He uses a Burt’s Bees lotion for after-sun and it always makes him look and feel better sooner.
