Psst… New Girl Here!

May 6th, 2008 @ 3:15 pm by Miss Candy Corn

Hey party people! I’m Miss Candy Corn and I’m a self-proclaimed Weddingbee addict. During my lunch breaks I sit at my desk with my mouth gaping open, staring at how beautiful and witty all of the bees on here are. I never thought I’d be chosen to be part of such a rockin’ hive! Consider me flattered beyond words! Since my boy and I are getting hitched in October, I figured candy corn was just the seasonal treat I was looking for! Plus, who doesn’t love the waxy tri-colored wonder? Come to think of it, I suppose I do know a lot of people who don’t appreciate the festive confection as much as I do (and I can’t blame them).

Here is the CliffsNotes version of my life:

I’m a Philadelphia-based artist and magazine editor planning a non-religious, blue & brown, bird-themed wedding with my hubby-to-be, Mr. Candy Corn. Nearly six years ago, Mr. CC and I met as freshmen, several days before classes started at Kutztown University (in the cornfields of Pennsylvania). A circle of friends had been forming outside on our campus’s lawn between the dorms, when I spotted Mr. CC in his death metal t-shirt and barely-still-together red chucks. He was pacing around outside by himself and looked too shy to say hello, so our mini circle of new friends shouted “Hey, come join the circle!”

The slightly-mysterious guy with the goatee and ripped jeans introduced himself and soon we found ourselves meeting on the lawn every night for the next month. Before I knew it, I was dating the guy who would be my first and final boyfriend.

On our two year anniversary, he led me to “our couch” in the Old Main lobby, the spot in my freshman dorm where we spent late nights rambling and sharing stories. Anyone who knows me, knows that when I’m in a situation where I’m feeling excited/angry/embarrassed/shy, my face turns a shade of red that not even Crayola could describe. This was one of those occasions. After pouring out the contents of his wee little heart (I’ll spare you the mushy details), he bent down on one knee as a crowd of clapping college students formed.

As if it wasn’t obvious, I said yes (and nearly peed my pants with excitement).

Two years later I earned my BFA in Communication Design with a concentration in Illustration. Mr. CC graduates from Kutztown University in Spring ’09 with a degree in music education and hopes to eventually teach high school music theory and orchestra.

I’m currently spending my days at Lifestyle Magazine as the fine arts writer and senior editor, where they let me wear jeans on a daily basis and curse like a sailor. During my free time, I obsessively wedding plan, hang out with our pets, work on my illustrations and try to get my work out to local boutiques and galleries. Our constantly-expanding family has grown to include one incredibly neurotic dog, two spazzy chinchillas and three amorous rabbits.

After spending every day with my best friend for nearly six years, I can’t imagine my life without him!

Welcome to the hive :)

That is the cutest engagement story and your bunnies are so RIDICULOUSLY adorable!!!

You guys sound a bit like me and Mr Radish. He also wears death metal shirts and is a musician, and we’ve also been best friends for over 6 years. We would’ve had a non-religious ceremony… but that didn’t quite work out.

Anyway, glad to have you here and I’m looking forward to hearing more about your planning.

Miss Pineapple-I TOTALLY had a bride crush on you before I got accepted as a bee. Yep, I’m a nerd. I heart your wedding ideas and I think we are long lost lovahs…or at least two pretty cool chickas.

Thanks for the happy comments guys! I noticed I have a typo up there. I meant to say that my boy “graduates” in Spring ‘09, not “graduated.” DUR. Must. not. obsessively. edit. eeeeep.

Yay! October wedding. Non-religious. Fellow editor. True arteeste. I think I may have a new favorite bee to obsess over… especially if you can rep for all the indie gals out there! No pressure, that is ;)

The cardboard-like walls at the Cliffs are priceless. As are the Amish men in Kutztown who smell like pea soup…that being said, I still absolutely adore Amish men!

Ok, I’m in London and totally not supposed to be around, but I’m sneaking in a quick hello. You look like Tina Fey, you have bunnies, and you italicized “Cliffs Notes”. I love you?

Miss Candy Corn says:

Mrs. Lovebug!!! Congrats on being a Mrs! Your witty wedding banter got me through so many dreadfully boring lunch breaks, you have no idea. You’ve inspired my typewriter-loving arse in a big way. Have fun in London! Wow, I certainly use a lot of exclamation marks.

Mrs. Radish-Mr. Radish totally reminds me of Mr. CC in some of your photos you post of him. They have the same death metal smirk, I swear…

Mags-Where on the Main Line are you getting hitched? It’s such a beautiful area. The magazine I work for has a Main Line edition, so I’m constantly absorbed in all of the happenings of the Main Line and wishing I lived there :)

Wow! I second Miss Pineapple with the twin thing…I’m from Philly, obsessed with birds, used to have a rabbit (Who was in love with one of my cats, but thats a whole ‘nother story…), I’m not an editor but I am an artist (sculptor) and also curse like a sailor at work ;) Congrats on your bee status and I’ll be looking forward to hearing more about your impending wedding! Good luck!

29.
Darla says:

Jeez…double twins….Just saw on your website that you’ll have some things at Mew Gallery. I have some stuff in Mew too! My collective (The Other Woman Collective) had a show there in Sept 07 and we sell t-shirts there…I also sell vintagey and cut paper stuff with my future mother in law to raise money for the wedding! Philly is so teeny tiny…. Yay!

Miss Candy Corn says:

@Darla:

Darla! I know all about The Other Woman Collective!! I’ve seen your rabbit sculpture series before (AH-MAZING) and I’m a fan of Laura Graham’s photos! I believe she’s myspace pals with my bff (yes I just used the term bff) photo friend, Laura Kicey (www.laurakicey.com).

Holy small world, batman.

We should be dorks and create bunny artwork together one day…it’s nice to know there are others out there :) I’m pretty intrigued by your rabbit who was in love with one of your cats! Our dog is absolutely terrified of everything and everyone since she was previously abused, so when Cadbury comes out of her cage and chases Betty White around and humps her, Betty gives me this look like “WHY DID YOU ADOPT ME FROM THE SPCA, I HATCHU!” and my heart sinks a little. But then I laugh at the rabbit humping the dog and get over it.

The end!

I still have to drop my prints & buttons off to Mew…oi with the poodles, I’m a slacker.

31.
Darla says:

Ha! Philly really is teeny tiny!!! Yay! Glad you like my rabbit sculptures AND Laura’s photos..Thanks!!!! And I love your Laura’s photos too! (Ha! Laura friends who photo…Triple twins!) Our rabbit (Maximus…funny considering he was a dutch dwarf and a little tiny thing) used to just hump any cat he could. He started with Logan, who’s asexual, then went to Georgia Peachface, who’s a bitch, and then found Friday, who at first hardly tolerated his antics, but in time they grew to have a man-tastic love fest on a day to day basis…Brokeback Mountain on the regular… Ah…interspecies love… :)
I vote yes to being dorks and making bunny art together!
Yay! Just let me know when you have rabbit inspiration strike (So long as its after May 25th…thats when I’m getting married….Ah!!! 18 days!)
Anyway, a pleasure to meet you and hopefully will meet you in real live person one of these days!!!
Yay!
