Choosing a first dance song was one of the toughest decisions Mr. Tiramisu and I have made so far. We are both really into music, and we wanted to choose the perfect song for the occasion. There is no “our song” in our relationship, although there are a lot of songs that have been important to us over the years.
Here we are dancing the night away at a wedding last summer. I shortly after dumped that martini down the back of some poor unsuspecting wedding-goer. Mr. Tiramisu now makes me finish my martinis before hitting the dance floor ![]()
We started tossing around ideas almost as soon as we got engaged. My first instinct was to go classic. “At Last” by Etta James was my earliest suggestion. This was the first dance at my brother’s wedding in 2002, and was sung by my cousin then and once more at my Aunt’s wedding. Sort of a family tradition, and my cousin has an amazing, show-stopping voice. We thought it might be nice to have a song all our own though, and also nixed it because at the ripe old age of 26 (ok, ok I’ll be 27 by our wedding), we didn’t think the sentiment of finding love “At Last” was really all that fitting.
Next on the list of traditional suggestions was “It Had to be You”, sung by Frank Sinatra. This one is frequently sung, by me, off key into Mr. Tiramisu’s ear. When actually trying to dance to the song though, we found our classy “high school prom sway” didn’t really do it justice.
Since traditional wasn’t cutting it, we next considered a couple more recent songs. One that holds special meaning for us is Bright Eyes’ “First Day of My Life”. The title is very fitting for a first dance song, no? Here are some of the lyrics that I just love:
“This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They’re spreading blankets on the beachYours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go”
But one of the next lines is “I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you” which is a little bit morbid. I still love this song, but Mr. Tiramisu wasn’t as into it, and I wanted to find something we both loved.
We thought we had struck gold when we heard “All I Want is You” by U2 when we were out this past St. Patrick’s Day- we both looked at each other at the same time with the same thought when the song came on. We both love U2, and have been to two of their concerts together. As soon as I got home I googled the lyrics to over-analyze them in my usual fashion. Here they are:
You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you
(the rest of the lyrics here)
Beautiful, right? Or is it? Is it in fact about some diamond-ring-wanting, secret-story-keeping girl whose simple boy just wants to love her? A sweet song or a rant against a crazy lover? You decide- we couldn’t. (Sidenote: Turns out there are a lot of U2 songs that raise similar confusion… the ever popular “One” sounds nice, but what about this line- “You ask me to enter/But then you make me crawl/And I can’t keep holding on/To what you got/When all you’ve got is hurt”?) I’m really into lyrics, and so I just couldn’t sway with my new husband to a song I wasn’t sure about.
We came thisclose to using our runner-up song: “We Got Love” by Ryan Shaw. Never heard of it? That’s actually one of the reasons why we decided not to use it. Ryan Shaw is a new artist that Mr. Tiramisu and I both love. We went to see him play at a small venue in Annapolis recently. This song is perfect, but it’s maybe a little too upbeat for our first dance. We’re hoping to get our band to learn to play it for the second dance… the one that gets the party started.
The winning song was suggested by Mr. Tiramisu (and ignored by me!) very early on in the process. It didn’t stand out to me at first, but we kept coming back to it, and as is custom in my wedding planning ways, if Mr. Tiramisu feels strongly about something (since he lets me make pretty much all of the decisions), I’ll go for it. And now I think this song is just perfect. No questionable lyrics, and it’s so beautiful and classic like I originally wanted. We didn’t start out with an “our song” but we’ll have one now: “That’s How Strong My Love Is” by Otis Redding.
If I was the sun way up there
I’d go with love most everywhere
I’ll be the moon when the sun goes down
Just to let you know that I’m still aroundThat’s how strong my love is, oh
That’s how strong my love is,
That’s how strong my love is, baby, baby,
That’s how strong my love is.
(the rest of the lyrics here)
We’ll be sure to finish it off with a big dip… the best part of a first dance
Anyone else without an “our song”? How did you choose the one for your first dance?
