How to Use a Bonefolder

May 8th, 2008 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Penguin

I bought a bonefolder about a year ago, misused it a few times, and forgot that I had it.  I couldn’t really figure out how it worked, and I kept making these shiny creases in my paper, so I gave up on using it.

What is a bonefolder?

A bonefolder helps you create perfect creases on cards and helps smooth out paper. Notice when you try to fold something by hand you get kind of a “jagged” crinkly crease? Bonefolders will create a professional looking fold at home.

I made some personal stationery cards for the girls at my MN shower, and I decided it was time to REALLY figure out how to use a bonefolder. Here’s the step-by-step!

1. Place a ruler along the line where you’d like your paper to be folded. With steady pressure, use the pointed end of the bonefolder to create a score mark. Press firmly, but not TOO hard, as pressing too hard will just cause your paper to rip in half when you fold it.

2. Remove the ruler, and now your paper is perfectly scored!

2. Fold the paper over, and feel free to use the flat side of the bonefolder to help give a perfect fold.

That’s it! So simple, yet I could never figure it out.

Happy Folding!

Thanks so much for this — I was just going to take my programs to Kinko’s today to be scored! What a coincidence!

would that work with vellum too? I’m wrapping my invitations in vellum and want to try to get nice, crisp lines.

Thanks for this post … I’ve always been intimidated by the bonefolder!

At the campaign I used to work at, we did a lot of folding.
We just folded everything in half, then ran a highlighter (a thick one) down the side to get rid of the jaggedness.

i have been thinking about how i needed one so i am glad youo posted this.

i thought it was something you put against the paper and then folded the paper against it….if that makes any sense.

i would have given up…lol.

PERFECT timing! I bought a scoring attachment for my paper cutter last night, but it’s cutting through all of my paper! I might have to try this if I can’t get the scorer to work!

HAHA! I bought a bone folder months ago, never got around to using it but was wondering “Hmm, I better find it and figure out how to use it.” I would have definitely used it wrong. You just saved me a lot of time (and paper). Thanks! :)

I have the same white bone folder and sometimes it leaves white marks on the colored paper I’m scoring. Does this happen to anyone else?
