My Last Minute Bouquet Change

May 8th, 2008 @ 4:54 pm by Mrs. Hydrangea

When we first met with Bella Flora to talk about our flowers, I wanted something modern. I’m still sticking to my guns about the florals for the ceremony and reception … except for one item … my bouquet.

Included in our floral package is a smaller version of what I’ll carry on the wedding day to use during my bridal portraits. As the portraits crept upon me, I realized that I just wasn’t in love with our initial idea of all white calla lilies for my bouquet. In my head, what we had planned looked something like this:

Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful bouquet. But, all of a sudden, I decided that I wanted something a little more romantic and traditional for this one particular item in our wedding. Immediately I thought “Peonies!”

(Image from here)

I e-mailed our wedding coordinator to see if this would be a possibility for my portraits, since the likelihood of having peonies in our late-September wedding didn’t look so hot. Luckily, the florist said he could definitely do a bouquet of all white peonies. I can’t wait to pick it up tomorrow and see the final result with my bridal cross that I purchased for the bouquet.

My next task is to find a similar type of flower that we could use in September for my bouquet, it just has to be the color white … any ideas?

I love Peonies - or any other full-headed flower for that matter. I don’t know if they will be available, but what about Ranunculas? They look very similar to Peonies.

English roses are what I am using, too look like peonies but a little more cost effective, and just as lush and romantic.

English garden roses- they look so much like peonies that I even was fooled looking at them.

Although you’re not making them- fifty flowers.com has like 20 different varieties- giving you a good example across the board.

Yeah - I wanted Peonies but they won’t be around for my July wedding. So my florist suggested ranunculus and Cabbage (English) roses. They are very full and soft just like peonies!!

I echo Miss CherryPie - my FSIL substituted white dahlias for her October wedding since peonies weren’t available. I love dahlias!

You’ll have to copy and paste these links or go to yahoo and search for “white lisianthus” but these flowers are avaliable in September, are not too pricy and are simular to peonies. I am actually having them in my bouquet with peonies. :)

My favorite flowers are peonies, unfortunately like you they will not be available at the time of year of my wedding. My florist suggested garden roses and rosita vendela roses as a substitute.

Sorry one more thing, make sure you tell the florist you want a double lisanthus, the single variaties look more like tulips. This flower is avaiable all year round, FYI.

Mums! I used a bunch in my bouquet and they looked beautiful, very full and fluffy. I would be a little wary of Dahlias. They do very poorly in the heat out of water (I really wanted them for my bouquet but it just wasn’t happening in July) and if you accidentally smack them they can shatter. Like, a million flower petals all over!

I think ranunculus would like really pretty. I’m not sure when they are in season.

Big, fluffy, white hydrangeas.
But I just had to say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look of the calla lily bouquet!

I’ve seen some florists bunch together carnations, the bane of the bride’s existence, and they look remarkably like peonies! Worth a try… very cost effective!

@Domino: Domino, your florist was right. I am having peonies only for my bridal portraits, in May. They won’t be available in September, so I’ve asked the hive for their suggestions for alternatives!
