Trying to plan a wedding in a new city, not to mention a new country, is tough, but the fact that we can get legally married here more than makes up for it! The wedding will be an opportunity for most of our family and friends to see our new city for the first time so it will be both a wedding and a reunion. Besides my future wife, I am also madly in love with a good bargain, Swedish pastries, Tivo, and my two dogs and calico cat (in no particular order).

Paradise Found!

One of the best things about being a Weddingbee blogger is getting suggestions from fabulous readers. I feel like I hit the jackpot when Weddingbee reader, Sam, who got married last month, gave me some advice on my honeymoon post. She suggested that I consider Curacao!

Curacao, which is part of the Netherlands Antilles, is actually trying to attract gay travelers! They have a website to prove it: http://www.gaycuracao.com/. According to Sam, most of the tourists are Dutch so they are used to seeing married gay couples. Many hotels on the island are members of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association. So this means we can have sun & sand honeymoon in a place that will welcome us. SOLD!

Other great things about Curacao is that it lies outside the hurricane belt, it’s known for its eco-tourism, and has more than 30 white sand beaches. Plus, the average temperature in the winter, when we plan to be there, is 81 degrees F.

Our honeymoon will be several months after our wedding. This way I can stick around Weddingbee and keep blogging well after the wedding ;) More importantly, we’ll be able to save up for some sweet resort living. Oh and this will help stave off any post-wedding blues since we’ll have the honeymoon to plan and look forward to long after our guests depart.

Is anyone else planning a delayed honeymoon?

We’re still planning, and we got married two years ago. We’ve had no money and no time since then.
But this August is it for us. Whee!
I’m so glad you found Curacao, I have several friends who studied there, and love it.

We’re getting married in December, then going on a honeymoon to Spain in March. It’s a way to save money, but also allows us to spend the holidays with our families.

We are! Since Mr. CC is taking forever to graduate (I tease, I tease), we’re waiting until May of ‘09 to head out to Italy, which is when our good friends (who are part of our bridal party and getting married two weeks after us) are going on their honeymoon! So we plan on going together and making the best of it :)

Curacao looks amazing! Those photos are so striking.

Saving up money for the wedding and the honeymoon is completely impossible. We’re postponing our honeymoon too. I’m dreaming of Greece and Turkey and probably will be for a number of months after our Oct 2008 wedding.

Too funny- Curacao was our second choice right behind Hawaii. Seems random, I know, but we had to work with a location that was available in the summer with my sister’s timeshare points. SO we’ll be traveling a month after the wedding in August, which I am thankful for as we won’t have to run around like crazy trying to pack AND do wedding stuff at the same time.

We will be planning a delayed honeymoon as well. The reasons are several; I definitely want something to look forward to after the excitement of the wedding, my future hubby is a teacher and we will look to work our honeymoon into the school calendar, and the finances will likely need to be replenished. I think we’ll do a long weekend out of town immediately following the wedding, however.

Sounds perfect - I haven’t been to Curacao but I have been to Aruba and loved it. I would think Curacao would be nicer as it’s less well known.

That is so awesome - glad to hear you guys found such a perfect spot to go! You must be so psyched. And I’m mad jealous about your destination. Been home for exactly one day and we’re already fantasizing about laying around on a beach…

we had our honeymoon cut short after about 12 hours due to a family emergency - so yeah, it’s gotta wait until next year. i think it’ll be better, we won’t be as constrained by budget.

Miss GB! We’re going to Curacao too for our delayed honeymoon! We’re going in November, and our wedding is in July. We’ve been there before though, and you won’t be disappointed! We loved it so much we knew we had to come back for our honeymoon. Get ready for beautiful sandy beaches, perfect temperatures, and lots of fun :) If you and Miss GB 2.0 are into hiking/recreational walking at all, I really recommend going out one day and touring the island. It’s so beautiful.

@LaurENors: Ooh, I can’t wait! Where have you stayed? What other recommendations do you have? I’d like to plan my entire honeymoon off of the advice of Weddingbee readers :)

We’re going on our honeymoon about 2 months after the wedding. We wanted to go to the Caribbean, and decided it would be best to go the week after Thanksgiving rather than in early October. I’m a little annoyed that the resort we’re staying at probably won’t give us the free honeymoon package (they require proof of marriage within the previous 30 days), but we got a good deal so we’ll probably splurge on spa treatments and such anyway.

The best part, I think, is that our first Thanksgiving as a couple will also be the first Thanksgiving that we’re not traveling to visit family. We’ll have a nice dinner for two at home and then head for the beach the following day!
