About Mrs. Tiramisu

Having a huge shower and getting lots of gifts = awesome.
Having to write lots of thank yous for said gifts = not quite as awesome.

Honestly, I’ve never really had a problem with the hand-written thank you note before. I’ve always almost enjoyed writing them, knowing that it’s likely that the recipient will be happy (and maybe even a little surprised) to get one. And I’ll admit, I am that annoying person who is a teensy bit offended when I don’t receive a thank you for a wedding/shower/engagement type gift.

So I didn’t think writing the thank you notes for my bridal shower gifts would be that big of a pain. I started off strong- two or three cards a night for a few nights about a week ago- but then I tapered off. I promised myself I’d send them out by tomorrow, so as to avoid paying the new postage rate (which translates into way more than a penny’s worth of hassle in going to the post office, waiting in line, and then affixing one cent stamps alongside the old ones). But wouldn’t you know I found myself last night with only a handful of thank you notes written. So much for pacing myself, I just wrote the rest of them in one sitting, for a total of FORTY thank yous. I know this is only a preview to the post-wedding marathon- HOW did you people do it?!

tys.jpg
Why of course I took a picture.
(You’ll see I had to use up some of the custom stamps we got in a free giveaway.)

Here are my hard-earned tips:
1. Pace yourself (ha!)
2. Realize that no one is going to compare their thank yous- it is okay to write the EXACT same thing in each card!
3. Follow a formula like this one- my interpretation of the one suggested in my copy of The Wedding Blue Book (thanks, Bee!)

A. Greeting
“Dear Mrs. Smith,”
B. Thank them for coming/Tell them you missed them if they didn’t come (here’s where it’s key to remember who was actually there…)
“Thank you so much for coming to my bridal shower! It meant so much to me to have so many friends and family there.” (*this line was especially useful when I wasn’t exactly sure if the person was a Mr. Tiramisu friend or distant family- they have a huuuuge family and I admit it’s hard to keep track!)
C. The gift
“Thank you also for the beautiful [insert gift here]“/”generous gift card to [store]”
D. It’s use
“I can’t wait to use it in our new home”/”go shopping and choose something fun for our new home”
E. Mention seeing them again
“Hope to catch up with you soon!”
F. Closing
“Love,”/”Fondly,”/”Best,”/”SMOOOOOOCH.”(reserved for certain special recipients),
Miss Tiramisu

Once I figured out the handy formula I whipped these out pretty quickly. Anyone have tips for making the process smoother? Did your groom help out? You better believe Mr. Tiramisu will be writing his fair share of the wedding thank yous!

I actually prefer to crank them all out at once — once I get started, that momentum kicks in and it’s easy to just keep going. Plus, I’m Jewish, so each hour that ticks past since I received the gift without sending out the thank you piles on more and more guilt.
My fiance has made it very clear that he will NOT help with wedding gift thank yous (his family is not remotely formal and wouldn’t care if he doesn’t get one, thus his justification that he doesn’t have to write any — which means I’ll be writing them all for his family). I’ll probably just bring my thank you notes along on the honeymoon and work on them while I’m sitting out on the beach!

We wrote them together in about a week (and wrote them ASAP before the wedding as gifts trickled in). I have much nicer handwriting, so I addressed all the envelops, then we just split them up, kept the list of gifts and a template pretty similar to yours between us, and wrote them while watching season 2 of Arrested Development. It was pretty painless all told, and we had them all done within three weeks of the wedding- which, since I’m pretty guilt-driven, was wonderful.

I wish you would have written this four days ago! I just got done writing my eighty, yes, 80, thank you cards for my shower, and this formula would have been so handy!!!

Thanks for posting! I’ve been writing ours slowly but having your easy formula in front of me will help me get a move on.

I avoided the formula…it was so…formulaic :) I opted to just spend entirely too much time on a note that will just be glanced over but oh well. I think its nice to write about things other than the actual thank you for the gift. Cant say all the hand cramping was really worth it, though!

A formula is a great tool, as long as you personalize it somehow. Real Simple had a good article a few months back on “How to Write the Perfect Note.” I will find it helpful when I start cranking out the thank yous! http://www.realsimple.com/realsimple/gallery/0,21863,1690916-2,00.html

Since I just had my bridal shower on Friday night, I’m right in the middle of writing 100 thank you notes! I totally agree with julieulie…write, write, and write until your hand falls off! Use the momentum and you’ll be finished before you know it!

Such a cute card! Where are those from? I have not yet had my shower…but it’s coming up fairly quickly and I need all the help in advance I can get. Formula has been saved on my desktop. Merci!

Like julieulie, my FI also sees no reason to do thank yous… so I’ll be doing all of them.

But I don’t mind doing them, once I get going. After Christmas and my birthday, I try to sit down and do them all at one time. I typically follow a similar formula. It works, because it’s easy to adapt the guidelines for each note.

It’s good to have a template, but it’s even better to start off with a petite card…that way if you have the bare minimum to say, it will still fill the page nicely. For the inner circle of friends and family I use bigger cards to write like Ms. Penguin says, about things other than the gift and my appreciate for it.

@Miss Penguin: I threw the formula out if I did actually know the person well- then it’s more fun. but oh man my hand cramped just with the short amount that I wrote- how do you do it peng?

@Dina: Paper-Source!

@chi: Very much with you on the small card thing! I used the bigger ones for the people I knew- and they are monogrammed with my maiden initials- had to use those up!

Does any one have any suggestions for how to keep your hands healthy while writing all of these?

I don’t mind taking the time to do them, but I’ve literally had pain in my hand since starting to write the 100 (yes, 100) thank you cards for my various showers. I’ve been doing them in spurts and getting them out within a week of each one, but now I’m concerned. The wedding isn’t until October, so we still have the wedding thank you’s to do and I’m not sure my hand will make it. I play piano and guitar and I work for a hospital where I’m always doing TONS of paperwork…so I can’t lose the function of my hand and I’m kind of concerned.

Is this a common problem?
