About candycorn

Our wedding ceremony & reception will be taking place at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology Philadelphia. Mr. CC and I chose the UPenn Museum after browsing several nearby mansions and hotels because we fell in love with the Chinese Rotunda and the Buddhist elements that run throughout the third floor of the museum. Plus, we get to ring the gong before being introduced as a Mr. and Mrs. Candy Corn. And by we I mean Mr. CC, after all he is the music major and I can’t even play the triangle without hearing dogs cry tears of extreme doggy disappointment from miles away.

A large portion of the galleries and exhibits will be on display for guests to explore on their own throughout the evening. These galleries include: Mesopotamia, ancient Israel, India, Tibet and their newly reinstalled classical galleries.

The ceremony itself will be taking place in the Chinese Rotunda, a majestic setting for the Museum’s Chinese collection, where our guests will be seated under the largest unsupported masonry dome in the United States:

Our reception will be located in the Upper Egyptian Gallery, which is adjacent to the Chinese Rotunda and filled with loads and loads of mummies.

The mummy room looks like it’s right out of a Goosebumps book (Return of the Mummy was the shiznit). Hopefully our guests won’t run away in fear…

For the smokers and nature-loving guests, the elegant scenery in the Upper Garden will be available for perusal. The historic garden has been restored to its original 1899 Italianate style and features a reflecting pond, a bronze statue of the satyr Marsyas (aka the statue with the exposed peenie that makes Mr. CC and I giggle every time we visit because we are secretly fourteen at heart), dramatic outdoor stairs to the third floor, and expansive views from one level above South Street.

Did I mention there’s a gong? And yes, I’m easily amused.

How did you guys know when you found the perfect location for you and your mister?

OOH WE HAD A GONG!!! We used it to get everyone to walk from the ceremony/cocktail hour site to the reception site. It was great fun. Gongs rock.

And the museum is absolutely gorgeous!!! (And welcome if I haven’t welcomed you yet??)

Oh WOW! What a gorgeous venue!! I love that your Reception is in the Egyptian pavilion! Guests will be eating their dinner next to thousand year old desicated corpses! (I’m not being sarcastic, I really do think that’s cool…I’m an armchair egyptologist..goes with the bellydancing I guess).
Our venue isn’t nearly as awesome. We chose it mostly because of cost and it was the only place in my FH’s hometown that can fit everyone…but I’m making the very best of it.

@Mrs. Bluebell:
I plan on taking full advantage of the gong. Maybe I should use it to announce whenever I have to pee to the guests or something really ridiculous (since I have pee fright haha).

Yay gongs!

We chose our venu because we got lots of great stuff for a relatively low flat rate (helloooooo five hours of open bar! And complimentary champagne, fruit & cheese in our complimentary bridal suite for the wedding night!). There’s also a long staircase into the reception hall for our grand entrance. The room we’re renting for the ceremony isn’t nearly as cool, but the party space is top notch for the price.

Your venue is sooo gorgeous! The mummy room is really cool, talk about good conversation pieces… We are getting married at the Crosley Estate in Sarasota and when I saw the outdoor staircase where I would make my grand entrance i KNEW that I had to have it! We unfortunately don’t have a gong.

Your venue is strikingly beautiful- and so unique!

Just one question… yesterday va-jay-jays, today “peenie”… how are you going to keep up with the trend you’ve set for yourself?!
I’m excited to see…! ;)

That is seriously the coolest venue!

This is so beautiful, I wanted a museum wedding so bad being an anthropology major but in Chicago they are just too expensive. And I used to love those Goosebumps books!

i love that venue - i live in philly so i know it well… congrats on finding such a unique place to hold your wedding! any other philadelphia suggestions??

GetMarried4Less says:

lol @ Goosebumps….i had quite a few back in the day!

(man i miss having free time to read)

my very first thought was, “WOW, she doesnt even have to decorate!” i am sure i am getting ahead of myself here (since you got a systematic purge going on and all) but are you planning to decorate your venue???

how cool are mummies at the reception!? i can imagine all the older prim, proper ladies, looking midly disturbed. HA!

hubandwif says:

Ha! I used to chew up baby carrots and spit them out to feed the fish in that pond with a friend of mine! (Classy I know ;) It was totally a major bonding expereince for my friend and I.)
BEAUTIFUL VENUE! LOVE the mummys!
My soon to be hub and I found our place when attending another friends wedding at Ridley Creek State Park. He swore he’d never get married where someone else we knew did but after going back to visit the space again he fell in love with it and said it was perfect (I was like “HELLOOO! Thats what I kept telling you!”)
Boys never listen!

Sharmeen says:

The pictures of the place are beautiful. I’m sure you and your guests will have the coolest time …

I do, however, have to giggle over your choice since everytime the Museum comes up, all I can think about are the hours I spent doing research there for a freshman course. Oh the horrific freshman trauma! :-P

Very cool! I’m getting married at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts this November, in the historic building, and we don’t get a comp suite! I’m jealous :). And no gong.

lunapark says:

Wow…I’m having serious venue envy! I’m getting married in South Jersey (thankfully NOT in a wedding factory but nowhere near as neat a place as the museum!) and this makes me want to scrap it all and start all over again in Philly! (or not since we’re just a few months away…and because I think several people might kill me first…)

@Miss Tiramisu:
I think you’re right…soon I’m going to run out of naughty body parts to talk about…hrmmm something to think about hehe.

@camille:
Philadelphia is a great place to have a wedding! Our runner up was the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but we just couldn’t afford it. We like a lot of the old mansions in the area too, like Fonthill, but ended up with Upenn because we just couldn’t resist the mummy love.

@GetMarried4Less:

As far as decorations go, we plan on decorating the tables with centerpieces, but other than that we’re going to keep it pretty basic because of our budget, but also because there are so many things to look at that I don’t think it’s really necessary to decorate too much more :) We’ll have an aisle runner, but other than that it will be pretty simplified.

@hubandwif:
That is the cutest story haha…I didn’t realize fish were fans of chewed up carrots. Good to know! :) Mmmm Ridley Creek State Park is gorgeous.

@Sharmeen:
That’s too funny! I always see freshmen there filling out papers and looking dreadfully bored and in pain haha…poor thing :(

@design-phan:
PAFA is so so pretty, I’m totally jealous of you! hehe That was our back-up option but we just couldn’t afford it there…but I heart everything about PAFA :)

I would love to get married at a museum, mainly the Getty (here in LA) but I’m too afraid to look @ the cost.

Miss Candycorn-
I love your venue! Two questions - (I already have a wedding spot, but have a friend in Philly looking)- where will the band be? And how many people can it accomodate? I wish I had known about this place when we were planning our wedding- it looks fantastic!

24.
elizabeth says:

Holy moly! I always would see the signs for the museum on the R5, but I never thought to go visit. This is something I must correct quickly on my next visit into the city! My dream wedding/reception venue would be the Art Museum (or at our alma mater and then at the Barnes), but we’re sadly getting married way out west of Philly (between it and Lancaster among the McMansions and corn fields) so I compromised and instead we’re having it at the Mendenhall. At least the gorgeous southern Chester County environs will sort of make up for the bustling city…and folks can hang at Longwood Gardens while we get our pictures…or go get a glass of wine at Chaddsford Winery, right? Right? :-)

@spruce08:
Thanks so much! There’s going to be a 6 ft. table right by the mummy entrance where the DJ will be set up (a band could fit there as well). I’m pretty sure they can accomodate several hundred guests, depending on which section of the museum the bride and groom choose. You can get married in the gardens or a variety of other places, like the lower egyptian galleries on the first floor, which are very cool.

I haven’t been to Weddingbee in a couple days, so I just saw this post. First of all, I have to say that I’m VERY JEALOUS!! I love the Penn Museum and would have liked to hold our wedding there, but it’s a bit too rich for our budget. It’s simply gorgeous, though.

I can’t wait to see what you post about other Philly vendors. Our wedding is still a long way off and we haven’t booked a single vendor, so this could be helpful!

Some bees have posted about the venues they didn’t choose — do you have any plans for this? I’m asking for purely selfish reasons because you probably looked at a bunch of places I’m considering but haven’t gotten around to seeing yet, and I’m always on the hunt for opinions :)

Anyway, it’s great to have you here and I can’t wait to read more about your fab wedding-to-be!
