Fakies Flowers for Flower Girls

May 13th, 2008 @ 4:02 pm by Mrs. Toucan

I really, really love the look of flower girls carrying pomanders. But with 6 flower girls (and 7 children total in the wedding party), having the girl carry pomanders with real flowers might be asking for it… (I’m totally picturing these flower balls being thrown in the air, all around the room, and ending up all squashy). So, the solution was to have the girls carry silk flower pomanders. My uncle in Hong Kong, who works with silk flowers, offered to make us our centerpieces, so I also asked him to make us some pomanders as well.

Here are the ideas/designs that I sent him:

The came in a couple of weeks ago, and here’s how they turned out!

And finally, modeled by Daddy Toucan (he’s such a good model, isn’t he?)

Pretty good, huh? :) I’m really happy with how they turned out, and I’m pretty confident they’ll survive the hands of 6 little girls… though just in case, I ordered a couple extra (you never can be too sure, right? ;) ).

Do you plan to have your flower girls hold real or fake flowers?

The pearl handle is SUCH a good idea! I like the way it looks, plus it seems so much easier to carry. The ribbon loop is kind of awkward to hold.

These turned out great - good thinking, and how kind of your uncle!

Daddy Toucan makes an awesome flower girl and Uncle Toucan rocks!

Any chance the Toucan family needs a Cousin beanchar? Because every time you post about all the amazing goodness coming out of Hong Kong, my longing to go there increases exponentially!

I made a very small bouquet for my flower girl - it was the same size as the little nosegay that my mom carried. It made it through the ceremony, barely. She ended up picking the petals off and by the reception, it was pretty much bald. Oh well…

my 2 nieces will be my flower girls, and will be 2 and 4 by the time the wedding comes around. The now-3-year-old is so excited about being a flower girl, but she is insisting that she will carry a basket of flowers … these pomanders are so cute i might need to get her to change her mind!!

I was thinking about pomander for the pictures.

I was a flower girl when I was 8, and I was so disappointed that I didn’t have flowers in a basket. So my little 3 year old will have a basket with dark red rose petals.

Now, if she will only walk down the aisle…..

I am actually considering having my 3 bridesmaids carry pomanders! Fake and hand-crafted, of course :) We won’t have any children in the wedding, so there won’t be too much comparison to flower girls… plus they hold them for what, the 12-second stroll down the aisle and then a few pics? So I’m all for it (and with bouquets costing $75 apiece, its a far more affordable option!)

with “fake” flowers like those, who needs to pay for real ones :) seriously, will Uncle Toucan mind doing some long-distance business?

They look great! And I think that’s partly thanks to your instructions — what a good job of making everything that you wanted extremely clear.
