Red Hot Lensbaby

May 13th, 2008 @ 3:07 pm by Miss Candy Corn

My fantabulous friend, Miss Laura Kicey, aka the girl who took my profile photo, is going to be our wedding photographer. I tend to be a total spazz when strangers take my photo, so it is a huge relief for me to have a friend photographing us. I would have tortured her and made her be one of my bridesgirlies, but luckily for her, she gets to hide out behind the lens all night.

Here are some examples of her wedding photos:

Laura’s packages for (local) weddings start at $1,700 for 6 hours of shooting, with all of the digital images on a CD. Even though I’m a tad bit biased, I was immediately drawn to having Laura shoot our wedding because she is more affordable than the photographers I had previously contacted, and her prices include a second shooter (plus she kicks arse…just sayin’!). I think the second shooter is important, because what if Laura goes to drain her wookie and misses something memorable like my Grandma doing the “Jump on it” Carlton dance or something completely random and awesome? Yes, these are the things I obsess over.

Anywho, if anyone was interested in contacting her, further inquiries can be directed to lk@laurakicey.com, or you can visit her website. I promise she won’t bite.

Are any of you having a friend photograph your wedding?

All my photographer friends were in my wedding!…so I had to go out and make another one! Mr. Hibbard Nash will be doing our photos and he’s an all around awesome guy, both behind the camera and when there’s one not around…. Yay to supporting friends who do stuff!!!
And I vote yes to Betty White! So cute!

We have very good friends, and former coworkers, shooting our wedding. They do amazing work and have tons of experience with beach weddings, so they were the perfect fit. And to top it off - they’re doing the photos as a gift to us!

We are lucky to have a friend who is a professional wedding photographer. The FI was a bit hesitant at first, as things might get a wee awkward if things don’t turn out, but we absolutely love her work and are excited. As an added bonus, she knows the entire wedding party, so no wondering who is who, at least for that!

Thanks for the tip! I’m a Philadelphia bride myself (getting married next April in Center City), and I just e-mailed Laura to ask about more details. I’m sure she’ll do a fantastic job for you!

I am the photographer among my friends, so no friend photographer for me. I am however interested in possibly having your friend be my photographer. :) After looking at her website it I’m intrested to see what she has to say and I am actually only about 20 min from Kutztown Univ. and about 50 min north of Phila. Any idea if she’s available 4/25/09?

I think we’re going to have one of FI’s friends photograph our wedding (still have to ask him). He’s a pro photographer, and although he doesn’t usually do weddings, he does a lot of other event photography and I know he’d do a fantastic job. However, I’m jotting down your friend’s name, just in in case he’s not able to do it, because I’m also a Philly bride and her work looks fabulous!

We’re tentatively (that is–if he’s not already booked for the date we haven’t picked yet) having a co-worker, turned friend, do our photography. His work is really amazing. If you’re in Chicago you should check him out at http://www.rastallphoto.com/
We were hesitant to ask someone really close to us because we wanted them to be able to enjoy the celebration.

My good friend Emily, who is a great photographer, and was my friend in art school, and she’s amazing. I can’t wait to see the great photos she will take, even though she’s not a pro. wedding photographer! It means more to have a friend involved in the process.

This is a tricky subject because of expectations all around. When I first started doing wedding photography I was touched and excited that acquaintances everywhere loved my work enough to start the conversation about having me do their wedding, but it got sticky really quickly when I realized part of the draw was that they thought I’d just do it for free or super cheap. As a wedding professional, that’s how I pay my rent!!! On the east coast where the winters are ugly, there are only a certain number of working weekends, so when someone I barely know wants me to shoot their 06-07-08 wedding for free…. um, no.

The flip side and the place where I have seen the most disappointment is when I see brides who choose to go for that “uncle/friend with a camera” who offered to do it but who is not actually experienced enough in wedding photography to get the right kind of look or deliver the stunning images. Photography is one of those things where you get what you put into the research and hiring of an outstanding and experienced photographer :)

Anyway, sorry to get ranty and it’s great that you have truly talented friend-professionals who are gonna give you rockin photos - friends always give their best and as long as they have experience with weddings specifically and you like that work, you should be good to go!

Oh I completely understand, and no worries, I insisted on paying her the standard rates because I really respect her as a photographer, and wouldn’t have it any other way, even if she is a good friend.

I’ve had a lot of people ask me to do illustrations or murals for them for free because we’re friends, so I totally understand where you’re coming from. Sometimes people don’t quite understand the time it takes to do what you do.
