So Long, Long Hair!

May 13th, 2008 @ 5:38 pm by Mrs. Radish

I did it … the post-wedding chop!!

I went to the fabulous Art & Science salon in Chicago (the Wicker Park location) where my stylist, Kim, cut off over a foot of hair. I’m really happy with it, but I still feel a little naked!

I had some seriously long hair before this. I’ve been pretty much growing out my hair since 2003. Not really for the wedding (although that may be part of the reason I didn’t cut it sooner), it was more a combination of being too lazy and cheap to get it cut, and being in some kind of personal contest with myself to see how long I could grow it out.

But my hair was just SO unhealthy and frizzy, and it’s naturally curly/wavy and thick so it was always in tangles and totally messy. I just couldn’t take it anymore. Not to mention I was shedding more than my cat!

I had similar hair when I was a little kid, and my little pet parakeet actually DIED in my hair. True story! I was playing with the bird and it was sitting on my shoulder when it got startled for some reason and flew into the rat’s nest that was my hair. It totally spazzed out, and got all caught in my hair. It worked itself up into a tizzy until it somehow choked itself (or maybe broke its neck) in my own hair! So you see, clearly this head of hair can be a hazard and I certainly don’t want to harm anymore pets or wildlife ;)

And by the way, apparently, it’s not good to brush your hair out while it’s still wet because it will give you split ends everywhere! Am I the only person in the world that didn’t know this?! I just learned this the last time I went for a trim. The stylist was so perplexed at how I could possibly have so many split ends all over my head, and after some hair-detective work, she figured out that is what I was doing wrong. I’m so embarrassed…

Anyway here is a photo-montage tribute to my old, long hair. We had some good time together… (cue some sappy music)

So who else has, or plans to, cut it all off after the wedding?

I’m crazy and cut mine all off BEFORE the wedding. I’ve had long hair all of my life. Long, straight and boring. Then back in February I saw a bad ass short wedding hairstyle that pretty much required bangs, which I haven’t had for 15 years. So in March, with 11 months left until the wedding and feeling really antsy about my hair, I went to a really nice salon, explained my situation to the stylist and my rationale of “if I don’t do it now, I won’t have time to grow it out if I hate it!” Luckily, I love it and am sooooooo happy that I’ll be rocking short hair and bangs on my wedding day!

I love the new haircut! That parakeet story is sad, but hilariously told :)

I’ve contemplated getting it cut THE DAY after the wedding — the day before leaving for our honeymoon…I am so sick of long hair, but not willing to part with it till after the wedding. Cute cut :)

SKM says:

Oh, and i LOVE your collage! :)

furelysse says:

I love it! Looks so chic. I recently went to my stylist for a trim and came out with a cute bob. I love it and not once regret my decision. My fiance proposed about a week later and now I’m trying to grow it out enough to have a low bun for the wedding. Once the wedding is over, I’m cutting it again…or do whatever is chic at that time.

Kaci says:

ME!!! In fact 2 days after the wedding (we are having 2 days of pictures) I am already scheduled!! Am I more excited for the wedding or to have my old haircut back? hmmm.

I love it! Looks fabulous! I go to the Art+Science in Wicker Park too. ;)

LOVE the new cut!
(BTW, I’ve never ever heard that it causes split ends to brush out your hair while it’s still wet. I can’t possibly do anything else. .. if I let my hair dry before brushing it, I’ll pull every last hair out of my head b/c it’s in complete snarls after I wash it and towel it dry. Or am I missing something here??)

Me! I was contemplating chopping it off during our layover at LAX before we leave on our honeymoon. Anyone know of a nearby LA salon??

Your new hair looks great! I’m actually growing my hair out. I’ve had it short for like 8 years, and it’s only gotten semi-long in the past year, so I have no plans to cut any time soon. But I had to comment, because I have that same shower curtain that you’re standing in front of in the first 2 pictures.

12.
Mary says:

i think of heard of that before but I have really fine hair and I always brush it right after I get out of the shower and no split ends for me.

You look very cute with the short cut.

birdie says:

I am definitely cutting off my long hair after the wedding. I can’t wait!

14.
Nstar says:

You are supposed to comb it with a wide-tooth comb when it’s wet instead of brushing :). Very cute cut Mrs. Radish!

dani says:

I don’t have crazy long hair, but I am planning on growing it for the wedding. I have really fine hair so i need LOTS of length to help volume.

On a side note, I killed my pet hamster by accidentally sitting on it. So i feel your pain.

16.
Amy H. says:

Nstar, aha — thanks. I use a really wide-bristled brush with not many bristles at all. Maybe I’ll switch to a comb, even . . . . :)

Tea says:

i love the cut and style on you. very nice :-)

i did the short hair cut after having long hair and i will never do that again. i really missed my super long hair. i now keep it at a good medium length that i absolutely adore [as does the bf] so i have no plans for chopping my hair. ever. lol.

blondebride says:

I will most likely chop my hair after the wedding next summer. My hair is very damaged right now, but it’s long and I want long hair on my wedding day! My stylist is trimming little bits at a time and I am using some EXPENSIVE shampoo that’s supposed to help with the damage…we’ll see.

But I’m definitely cutting it after the wedding!

tamara says:

I like the new cut — I am kind of cracking up because the second photo from the left on the bottom sort of looks like there are two of you–one standing on each side of mr. radish.

JangerToBe says:

I’m doing the post-wedding chop the day after we get back from our mini-moon. I cannot WAIT to cut off some inches of my way too long hair.

Your cut is adorable, by the way! You have great bone structure and the shape of the cut really shows it off.

Mrs. Lovebug says:

You look gorgeous. I’m not sure I could do a full chop…but I’m definitely contemplating bangs…

Linda says:

I cannot wait til after the wedding to chop it off. My hair’s about as long as your was. I love my long hair but I’m ready for a change.

missopie says:

I love, love, love your new haircut! So stylish! I will definitely be chopping my long hair off after the wedding… it has not been easy growing it out… my mom’s a hairdresser! I have two days between the wedding and the honeymoon and I’m even thinking about trying to squeeze the cut into that timeframe so I can have it done before the honeymoon!

26.
KatyStardust says:

That look fabulous with the texture of your hair! Lucky you!

I’m in the “Cut Your Hair After the Wedding” Club. I’m all for it. Growing out my hair has been extremely tedious and almost painful so far. Egh.

When I cut off that much hair, I donated it to Locks of Love, which is a really cool charity that makes wigs for children with cancer or other diseases that cause them to lose their hair. Did you save any of it? You could still donate it…here is a link:

tberry says:

If I can hold out until the wedding i will be cutting it. My FI loves my hair short but it really limits styles for the wedding because I don’t just wear it short , I wear it boy short. I am growing it out to give me some options for the wedding. i can always cut it right before if I want but i can’t grow it out in the month before.

30.
Lani says:

Shorter hair looks great on you! I can’t wait to chop all my hair off. I’ve already booked my appointment and have instructed my hairdresser to chop it ALL off. To the chin anyway. :)

31.
beanchar says:

Your chop looks great.

I cut about two inches off BEFORE the wedding and have been growing it LONG ever since (our one year anniversary is in six days!).

My hair is super thin and fine, but with it really long, I have more options for pretty updos for special occasions and it’s kind of fun seeing how long it will get. Mostly it just looks like a hot mess— LOL.

But in my next life I swear I’m going to have your gorgeous hair, Mrs R!

32.
goteamgo says:

I have (and love my) short hair already.

Your hair is gorgeous- before and after!

33.
Cyd says:

I cut mine off right after my best friend’s wedding last summer. She really wanted all of us girls to have our hair up and plus I figured if I hated it, I would hate to look like crap in all of her wedding pictures. The week after the wedding I cut off 14″ and went from long locks to an inverted bob I am still rocking nearly a year later.

Right now my debate is whether or not I want to grow it out before my wedding…I told my future husband I might, but he loves it short and asked me to swear I would cut it right away (preferably before the honeymoon) after the wedding. Which makes you wonder…if you love it short and your guy loves it short, why grow it out just to have the typical wedding up-do?

34.
Arivechi says:

If I get desperate I’ll get it chopped somewhere in Spain on the honeymoon… it’s already driving me crazy so I don’t know if I’ll last till AFTER the honeymoon.

I sorta wish I liked my hair when it is longer than shoulder-length but it does better at ear-length or shorter.

35.
chibride says:

The RIP photo collage of your long hair was funny. I used to go to Art + Science in Evanston, but then I had 3 different stylists move out of state. I’m growing my hair out so that I can donate it to a charity. I’m already sick of growing it out. I can’t wait to go back to short hair, but I’ll need a new salon.

Sue Walsh says:

Your hair looks beautiful!! I chopped mine off after my wedding to-7 inches! I spent nearly two years growing it out so I could have a fancy updo for my wedding. I keep it just above shoulder length now and love it. So much easier to deal with and it looks much healthier!

HCB says:

I have cut mine BEFORE the wedding with 2 months to go! I am sick of long hair, and I think a short sassy cut for a July wedding is definitely the way to go.

Yes, I’m going to get mine cut after the wedding… I have a feeling I’ll be in the mood for a change by then!

Uhm, did no one else comment about that horrific bird story?? Omg, you must have been so traumatized!! To have your pet die IN your hair… eeks =T

You look fabulous. I did a similar thing — actually on our honeymoon. I cut quite a bit of hair, but didn’t go quite as cute and short as you didn. Here is my “chop” photo: http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/09/24/ive-got-a-new-attitude/

That was 8 months ago and I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t cut it since. Again, it got quite long. I FINALLY made an appointment for this Saturday for a cut. I’ll be sure to post photos.

Maegan says:

I love your new cut and the photo board!

Today is our 2 month anniversary - I have an appointment tomorrow at 5:15 for a cut. Good bye 5 inches of irritation! :)

Sara says:

Oh sad….I love my long hair and I can’t get rid of it. I tried short hair after I graduated college. It was fun for about three days then I hated that I couldn’t do anything with it and it would not stay in place. It is now not as long as it used to be (mid-thigh then, just hits waist now), but no way will I go back to short hair. I don’t understand how shorter hair is better. I don’t have to do anything to my hair to make it look good except wash it twice a week and brush it once a day.
