About Mrs. Pineapple

My New Housemate!

May 14th, 2008 @ 5:56 pm by Mrs. Pineapple

Just 3 weeks after I purchased my gown from David’s they called to say it had arrived! I went to the store with my Bridesmaid Katie to try on and take home my gown. (** Don’t you dare click that link Mr. Pineapple **)

It was a size smaller than the one I had tried on in the store. When I first put it on it was too tight in the boobs. Luckily though, not way too tight. The dress has built in boning and such that allows you to go bra-less. Initially I thought I would feel really uncomfortable without a bra. However, once I took it off I couldn’t even tell and the top of the dress fit perfectly. Losing the bra (which went down to my hips) made the waist too loose, but nothing alterations cannot fix.

The dress ended up with a failing grade though. Katie noticed a light spot on the front of the dress. It looks like some sort of discoloration in the fabric rather than a stain. So, David’s said they would “fail the dress” and order me a new one.

I was worried that this was a sign of bad things to come. Since David’s has such a poor reputation I assumed something would have to go wrong. However, they were super accommodating and said “of course we wouldn’t want you to take a dress home that wasn’t perfect!”

Two weeks later I got another call, that my new dress was in! I went solo this time to inspect it and pick it up and it was perfect!

After a 20 minute ride home in the passenger seat, my dress is now in my hands! I was worried, because that is what I do, that my dress would be somehow delayed or the order lost.

The only place I could hang it was on the back of the door to our guest room. Our closet is much too full and the guest room closet is too short. So there it hangs, at least for now.

Anyone else have a snafu with their first gown?

You could stuff it in a closet, it doesn’t have to hang as it will likely have to be pressed anyways closer to the wedding. hehe, I got my dress already for a 2009 wedding and it’s currently stuffed in my closet.

Aren’t you not supposed to hang it? My sister was told it could stretch out the dress — even just a bit — and put hers, in protective tissue paper, in a box under the *dust-free* bed.

Oh yes. I got my first dress from DB as well, and the dress came in THREE TIMES and all three times it was wrong. The first time it fit, but had a discoloration. They sent it back and ordered a new one. Second time, came in and it was way too tight - turns out the dress was mis-labeled. They sent it back and ordered a new one. THIRD time, it came in and fit, but the bottom layer was about two inches longer than the lace overlay!

Luckily all of the horror stories I heard about DB was not true in my case (other than the faulty dress). They made sure I found a new one I loved and gave me a discount to boot! Turns out I love this dress even more than the last one, so I’m considering it fate :)

Going off of what Dimples mentioned about pressing: my sil just had her last fitting at DB and asked about bringing the dress in for pressing closer to the wedding (she’s getting married in August). Her consultant said that it’s not DB policy to press the dresses for free, so my sil will have to pay $40 for them to press it again!

I was really surprised by this considering that DB doesn’t store dresses in their stores, so every bride has to have her dress hanging in a closest or stashed under a bed for up to months on end…seems kind of silly to me.

I got my dress from David’s, and they were fabulous. I actually bought it off the rack because it was being discontinued and they had it in the size that fit me perfectly. The deal with pressing it is that you shouldn’t have them do it when you first take it home. Wait until after your alterations. Although, if you are planning on having it altered by someone else, you will have to find another place to have it pressed - David’s won’t touch a dress if someone else has done work on it, which I can understand - they don’t want to be held liable for someone else’s work.

Anyway, I just had to state that I love David’s. They called me when the dress I loved went on the discontinue list (even though my wedding was over a year away), and they have let me exchange both my flower girl dress and one of my bridesmaid’s dresses for other sizes they had in the store (none of my maids or FG live in the area, and most don’t have access even to a DB, so 2 of the dresses were ordered in the wrong size). They are getting a huge THANK YOU from me after the wedding, with a picture. ;-)

Sorry for the book, I just had to let people know that David’s Bridal doesn’t always deserve the reputation they get. It probably depends on the store, but I’ve had only great experiences there!

I did the mail order program with RK Bridal, and got a call around when my dress was supposed to arrive that it had come in, but had stains on it. Luckily, they had already taken care of everything and had called Watters and requested a new one. Last week it arrived (about a month and a bit later), beautiful and stain free! So, two thumbs up (more if I had them!) for RK Bridal and Watters! But, whew, would I have been a mad bride if I’d gotten the stained dress.

@Becky: I’m glad you had a good experience. I haven’t had it pressed yet, they will do that after alterations. Your positive review of them, continues to give me high hopes that they will come through :)

I found the perfect dress at Jessica McClintok. Unfortunately the store in my area didn’t have my size and when we looked into it only 4 were left in the ENTIRE nation! My mother and I quickly ordered the gown in my size from another store.

The next day, the salesgirl called me saying there were only two left… and they both had stains! Luckily they offered to bring one in and let me decide. When it came in, the stain was hardly visible and I got 15% off! I still need to have in taken in and dry cleaned but I really feel like I lucked out.
