Reception at Glen Foerd

May 14th, 2008 @ 5:00 pm by Mrs. Tiramisu

As promised, here are some more pictures of Carolyn and Josh’s wedding in Philadelphia. The reception was held at the beautiful Glen Foerd Mansion on the Delaware River. Carolyn and Josh arranged a bus that made two trips from the Omni Hotel in Philly out to Glen Foerd- first to take them and the bridal party, then to bring the guests. During our extra time we took pictures on the grounds of the mansion.

This isn’t them, but we also got to take pictures in the boathouse:

Glen Foerd is a really neat venue because of all the different locations within the house and the grounds. As the guests arrived, food and cocktails were served in the main foyer and the drawing room. The bridal party and the newlyweds were announced towards the end of the cocktail hour, and we all came down the huge staircase as we were announced. Here’s me with one of the two best men:

And here’s the new Mr. and Mrs! It was quite a grand entrance…

Josh is beaming in this (sorry, blurry) photo for a number of reasons. First of all, he just married that beautiful lady to his left. But second, that lady just pulled off an awesome surprise. Carolyn had arranged for sports announcer Harry Kalas, “the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies” to record the wedding party introductions! Josh, being the hugest Philly sports fan I know, just about died when he heard the voice come on, and I heard one of the groomsman say that it was the best day of his life, because “Harry Kalas just said my name”. Needless to say, it was a huge hit.

After the introductions, Carolyn and Josh went right into their first dance, in the drawing room:

The staff at Glen Foerd was really great at smoothly moving the crowd from one room to another as the night went on… after the speeches we were all moved into the dining room, and dinner was served at two stations. The food, done by Conroy Catering, was all fabulous. Here’s the dining room:

(not from their wedding, sorry)

and here’s me with the aforementioned yummy food:

After dinner the crowd was moved again into the conservatory. This was such a cool space!

I hope you can tell from this picture that there are three different levels in the conservatory- the ground floor had tables set, a dessert table, and a coffee station. The elevated level you see in the center was surrounded by candles and was a great dance floor, and the highest level served as a stage for the band. It was a really unique space that gave plenty of room for those who wanted to dance and also a spot for taking a break or just watching the action with a slice of cake.

We had a great time as the band played until midnight when the bus arrived to take us all home.

Here’s Jenny, the maid of honor, catching the bouquet!

This one’s for reader “June2008″, as requested, a close-up of Carolyn’s bouquet:

Carolyn and Josh had Philly soft pretzels and bottled water (adorably personalized of course) waiting for the guests to grab and take on the bus ride home.

It was really fun to go to this wedding and try to see everything from a guest point of view. It was refreshing actually to see everyone so excited about the little details that I know took Carolyn so long to plan. Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. who are no doubt enjoying their honeymoon in South Africa right now!

Does the way you look at weddings as a guest change now that you’re planning your own?

Oh my god, how did Carolyn get Harry Kalas to record the wedding party introductions?!?!?!?!? My fiance would just about die if I could arrange for that to happen!!!!

And yes, I definitely have a much more critical eye to weddings now that I’m planning my own. But to be honest, I’ve always had a fairly critical wedding eye, knowing that I would *someday* be planning my own; the good news is that my fiance now has a more critical eye as well — it’s nice to see that he notices the details and then wants to discuss them later!

Did you all like the Omni? My FI and I are considering that hotel for ourselves — and guests who want to treat themselves to a night out in Philly (we’ll have the Holiday Inn as our other option for guests).

To see some of my sister’s pics, go to http://www.cpatrickphoto.com and click on Tamara & Jeff under weddings. :-)

OMG…I love the announcer idea. Sigh, all the announcers I grew up with and loved are all passed on.

I’m so glad to see these photos, and to hear that the food was yummy! I’m considering Glen Foerd and will hopefully be going to look at it in the next couple weeks. Did you notice anything in particular I’d want to be on the lookout for?

How did she manage to get Harry Kalas?? My FI would love to have him say his name just once in his life. He wouldn’t even be able to go on with the rest of the day after that but it would be worth it since we would already be married and it would be one of his greatest memories ever 1

Tiramisu,

Follow-up q: Did you go to St. Joe’s? I know many SJU alums get married at Old St. Joe’s, so I’m just curious…

Hi everyone!
I know Carolyn will love to read these comments when she returns from her honeymoon! Glad you liked the pictures. I’m not sure exactly how she managed to get Harry Kalas, but I know it required lots of phone calls to his office. She will be happy to share the details when she gets back home later this month!

@Mags: The Omni was nice, and the guest rate was pretty decent for downtown Philly- $179.

@HL: It was gorgeous! The best part was all of the different areas where guests could be- although it did mean that sometimes people were pretty spread out, so it’s probably best for larger weddings (I’d say 100+ anyways).

@MagPie518: Nope, neither the bride or groom went to St. Joe’s. They both went to the University of Richmond with Mr. T and I :)

Such a gorgeous wedding! Thank you for sharing:)

I am definitely looking forward to attending a few weddings this summer as a guest.

If I may ask, where are your bridesmaid’s dresses from? Very cute!

Miss Tiramisu says:

@ErinMarieMack: The dresses are the Karen Crossdye Dupioni Silk from Ann Taylor.

awesome, we got married at the knowlton mansion, which is also owned by conroy catering! glen foerd was a little too small for our guest size, but it is sooo beautiful! their service is great and the food was mostly delicious - apparently a bunch of people had overcooked steaks on one side of the room, and the other half had perfectly done steaks.

i looked at glen foerd and the setting was amazing but i was concerned about people not really dancing because it was in a different room than dinner so no dancing could even begin until the meal was over. one of my friends is looking for a venue now though and is considering it but she has the same concerns– did a lot of people dance?

Miss Tiramisu says:

@spruce08: Yes! A lot of people danced! I think the key was the catering people being so good at moving everyone from room to room as the night went on. So when dinner was over and the band was about to start, they came table to table in the dining room and asked us to move into the next room for dancing, coffee, and dessert. They also moved all the centerpieces into that room. It was also important I think that there were tables in the conservatory so that non-dancers had a spot and everyone could be together there. Good luck to your friend!

I am getting married at the Glen Foerd next June…is there any way I could see some pictures of your wedding…anything you didn’t like about it???

Miss Tiramisu says:

@Noelle: Hi Noelle! It was actually my friend Carolyn’s wedding, and these are most of the pictures that I have right now that show Glen Foerd. If you want to shoot me an email at tiramisu@weddingbee.com I can send you some more pictures or Carolyn’s email address when she gets back from her honeymoon. I loved the reception venue though, the only thing I can think of is that it’s a pretty big space, so if you had a small wedding it might be a little spread out with all of the rooms. Carolyn had 111 and it was perfect.

loved the harry the k intro! i definitely want that for my wedding! my fiance and dad would be so delighted!! any details on how to get that would be great. anyway, we are set to marry at the GF in July of 2009. We are having a “stations” style wedding and am curious if anyone has had this yet. we are also having the wine tasting in the cellar. we plan to have the max amount of guests (155) and am concerned about space for eating. has anyone had stations style wedding at GF?? i absolutely love the grounds and the mansion. OH! any insight on bathrooms?? i am concerned because there is only one fully accessible women’s room and it is in the mansion (away from the dancing) and then men’s room is in the basement. With 150 guests and some elderly this worries me… any thoughts? thanks!!!
