Something Old and Blue

May 14th, 2008 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Gingerbread

On Monday I posted about someone else’s grandparents and on Tuesday I posted about mine, but wait, there’s more. My grandparent-themed posts aren’t over yet.

One of my favourite pieces of jewelery is an aquamarine ring from my Swedish grandmother on my father’s side. I only met my farmor (that’s “father’s mother” in Swedish) a few times and I was too young to remember her. From what my mom tells me, she gave me a toy truck once. Then when she died many years ago, she left me a few pieces of jewelery in her will.

Aquamarine is my birthstone. It’s definitely something old and something blue. Maybe I’ll wear this for my wedding.

I don’t know the story of farmor’s ring, but I do appreciate that she gave her granddaughter a toy truck and a pretty ring. Thanks for not pigeonholing me, farmor :) And while I don’t plan on keeping my wedding dress for future generations, maybe my granddaughter can wear this ring at her wedding.

Are you planning to wear any “family jewels” for your wedding?

As a shower gift from my paternal aunt (who has no daughters), she passed down to me a pearl necklace that belonged to my great-great-grandmother. She received it for her wedding as well, as did my grandmother and great-grandmother before her. I feel so special to have received such a storied gift, and will use it as my something old for our ceremony!

I am tying a gold locket my grandmother gave me to my bouquet, with pictures of both sets of grandparents (they are all deceased). That way, I’ll feel like they’re with me.

I am wearing the first gift my grandfather ever gave my grandmother. It is a two toned bracelet with a blue stone. My grandmother passed it down to my sister. It will be my “old, borrowed, and blue”

I will be wearing a 3 strand pearl bracelet that was my father’s mother’s. I will also be wearing a pearl necklace that was my mother’s mother’s. The necklace was a wedding gift to my grandmother on their wedding day from my grandfather and she wore the necklace that day. It was originally a 2 strand necklace. When my mother and her sister grew up, my grandmother had the necklace separated and gave one strand to each of them. They will be my somethings old and borrowed.

That’s a beautiful ring! My engagement ring is an aquamarine which I chose because it brings luck to marriage (http://www.gemstone.org/gem-by-gem/english/aquamarine.html).

I’ll be wearing my grandmother’s pearl earrings and necklace at the wedding, as well as using my other grandmother’s wedding band during the ceremony.

I’m incorporating a broach of purple rhinestones into my dress that belonged to my great grandmother. It’s a beautiful, delicate little circular broach that has an amusing story behind it - my grandmother gave it to my mom one day when she thought the shirt Mom was wearing to work was too low cut and all of the boys would be looking down her blouse! So from humble beginnings it’s now going to be my “something old”

No, I don’t have anything…but I wish I had your ring…it’s freakin’ GORGEOUS! :)

I haven’t decided yet, but I may wear my late grandmother’s blue topaz ring as my “something blue.” One of my great-grandmother’s necklaces is also a possibility as “something old.”

I love this tradition! Your ring is beautiful! I will wear a pair of diamond earrings that have been passed down 5 generations of oldest daughters on my Dad’s side of the family:) Maybe if my sister is nice, I will let her borrow them for her wedding someday too;)

I haven’t decided what piece I will wear yet but my mother and I have several pieces from her mother and grandmother. I will probably wear one or more of them and perhaps I will wear something from my grandmother on my dad’s side if she offers.

My FI’s grandmother (who he was close to) passed away last year and I may wear a piece from her collection as well.

That ring is stunning!

I wore all my own jewelry, but it included an extremely sentimental piece that was a birthday gift from my deceased grandmother.

I also have an aquamarine, an heirloom from my mother’s mother’s mother (my great grandmother).

That is such a pretty ring!

I wore a bracelet that was actually a pearl necklace that my mom wore as a flower girl in my great aunt (who I’m pretty close to) and uncles wedding over 40 years ago. I just looped it around my wrist twice.

That ring is so gorgeous and unique, and it looks amazing on your hand! My maternal grandmother, who died when I was 7, used to make flowers from seed beads… I had a basket of them in my room when I was growing up. I actually just e-mailed my mom this morning to ask her if she’d send me some so I can incorporate them into my headpiece! Not exactly jewels, but “pretties” nonetheless. :-)

Sadly, we don’t have anything heirloom-y in my family, and I didn’t have the cash to start the tradition with my own generation. But YOUR ring is just wonderful. Love the fact that it’s also “something blue”!

How fantastic! While we don’t necessarily have old passed down pieces like that, my grandma did give me one of her jade rings that my mother is getting reset in a more updated setting so I can wear it to my reception. And my mom has a plethora of jewelry for me to pick through =).

Desaray says:

When my dad died, I found a lot of turquoise jewelry among his things, including a turquoise pen knife and the most unique turquoise safety pin. Now that I write about it, it might even be a diaper pin. I was really touched by his little collection — dainty and cheap, but beautiful. I’ll find someway to work it in. Lauren said she will carry the knife.

Your post felt eerie because I have exactly the same plans. My Norwegian grandmother (who I also called Farmor!) left me an aquamarine ring because we shared birthdays in March. I am so excited to wear it and think of her sprit being there with me.
