The Best Details

May 14th, 2008 @ 12:31 pm by Mrs. Ant

Well, the secret’s out now. Our wedding totally degenerated into an episode of “Wedding Gone Wild“. Classy, eh? winky08

I couldn’t imagine a better way to kick off our marriage than with a fantastically fun celebration with our closest friends and family. Vacation + Vows = Wondrous Weekend

It’s actually been a year and a half since our wedding. During the interviews with Modern Bride magazine, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could still remember that weekend so clearly. Or at least the moments that made me overwhelmed with unbridled joy.

To be completely honest, most of the details that the article featured were things I had trouble remembering or things of very little importance to me. I had to dig into my files to find out what dishes we chose to serve and what specialty drinks they made at the bar. They devoted several lines to describing our wedding cake flavors and our floral arrangements, but I confessed to the interviewer that I didn’t care much about these details and had mostly left them up to our coordinator.

I can understand why the editor chose to feature those details. They are the most useful to other brides because they are the only things that can be replicated. But one unfortunate consequence of bridal magazines focusing so much on material items is that it gives brides-to-be a wedding-industrial complex.

For me, the best details at our wedding weren’t monogrammed or meticulously arranged. As cheesy as it sounds, the best details were truly the tears, the hugs, and the laughs that Mr. Ant and I shared with our loved ones. heart2

thank you so much for sharing all these details. i rushed to see the article in modern bride and was so pleased for you! but you’re right — the best part is the experience with your loved ones. that gets lost freuently which is why a community like weddingbee where we can share, not just the DIY details, but the emotions from the day really put some perspective on the wedding to brides to be.

will you be able to make the potluck picnic on sunday? i’d love to meet mr. ant! mr. onion and i will be there.

its funny how the very things that most brides stress over end up being the least important thing after everything is all said and done.

Loved reading your posts and seeing those stunning pictures, Mrs. Ant! (The impromptu pool party sounds like it was so much fun, and what great photos they got of the event.) And I totally agree with your final conclusion!

This IS refreshing!

When I read the spreads in bridal mags (which I do with great intent, so this isn’t to say I’m against them), there’s a part of me that always thinks “THIS is what was important to you? Getting the perfect shade of (trendy color) table linens?” It’s so wonderful to hear that it’s the magazine and not the brides! You are so right, that it’s just too hard for a magazine to describe the emotions and meaning of the wedding. After all, haven’t we all attended touching weddings where we couldn’t remember the centerpieces?

Congratulations on your wedding that was not only beautiful in detail, but beautiful in sentiment!
