About Mrs. Toucan

I Ate French Fries Today

May 15th, 2008 @ 5:55 pm by Mrs. Toucan

I think I should first start off by saying, I don’t think I need to lose weight. However, as the wedding gets closer and my stress level gets higher, I’ve found that I also have a never ending appetite (hello stress eater!).

I don’t exactly want to gain weight either. So, instead of limiting my food intake (I seriously feel ill, like I’m going to pass out if I don’t eat when I’m hungry), I’ve been watching what I eat.

I’ve been consciously trying to:

  1. Eat more protein so that I get hungry less often,
  2. Increase my water intake (I didn’t drink nearly enough before),
  3. Stick to low-fat and low-cal foods.

I was doing really well… until today. I caved. I ate my favorite food in the world - FRENCH FRIES.

This is a pretty accurate representation of Miss Toucan
and her love of french fries in cartoon form. [

Most women like sweet treats, but I’ll pick a plate of french fries every time.

What’s your weakness and how do you keep from caving?

my wedding caker baker is just across the street from our apt. Ever since our tasting, I regularly craaaaaave cake! I have never been much of a cake-eater. So strange. I so crave crave crave that cake. I let myself have it every once in awhile. And whenever I want to have something else I shouldn’t, I think of the cake and how that can be my one indulgence. And then I think of how long you have to work on the elliptical to burn those calories. But I still cave. Mmmmm….cake.

i’m not a sweets gal, i’m a french fries gal too!

i’m a salt addict as well. fries, chips and salsa, queso get behind me. the truly unfortunate thing about being a salt fiend is that unlike sweets, salt makes you bloated and water-retainy!

Peanut Butter & Jelly Cupcakes! They are my latest obsession!
There is a bakery here called Susie Cakes (http://susiecakesla.com/) and their Cupcake flavor of the season is Peanut Butter & Jelly, I don’t know what I am going to do when the “season” is over.

If you are trying to maintain your weight - it seems like you are being very smart about it. Its about healthier choices…. MOST of the time! No big deal.. just don’t do it daily!!
Any you’ll notice that the more water you drink, the less severe your craving become. Since you are a salt fiend instead of a sweet toother - i’d make sure that you keep small things of pretzels around; and whenever you crave the fries, try to see if pretzels curb it. If not - order the smallest size of fries and eat them SLOWLY! Try an make sure that even still you have a few left over that you don’t eat. Those little bits can really help.

Oh, I’m totally going to print that picture you posted and wear it on a T-shirt! My FI and I were just talking about my fry obsession (as I was eating them) last night :) I find that if I don’t have them for awhile I actually don’t miss them too much so when I’m trying to be good I really have to abstain. Seems like you’re doing all the right things to maintain!

hahaha…so cute….it’s ok to eat fries….if it will help you relieve stress then it’s well worth it…shoooooot…I’m drinking coca cola….my vice~ What can u do…I just don’t drink the entire thing…oh what a world it owuld be if we could eat and drink whatever whenever…………….

Natalie says:

If you are eating healthy most of the time, it is ok to eat french fries once in a while, just not every day. Make sure to drink extra water and maybe try to eat low-sodium, low-fat for the rest fo the day.

Also try making your own baked fries or even baking the frozen kind you can buy at grocery store. Both are better options than eating out versions.

I sure do feel you! Fries are my weakness… extra points if they’re from McDonald’s! I KNOW there are better versions of fries out there and I know that there are many other restaurants that serve fries that supposedly taste better, but for me, nothing beats a carton of hot and salty McDonald’s french fries.

My other vice is Pepsi. Pepsi with so much crushed ice it’s like drinking a slushee. :)

I wish I had advice for you on how to curb your cravings, but I have to be honest, if your obsession with fries is anything like mine (and I’m guessing it is, seeing as how you went and found a cartoon for it!) then the best I can offer is to say keep throwing that water back too! It should help with the salt induced bloat.

Oh, my! That is so me and my mom! *lol* Burger King or McDonald’s? I say Burger King fries all the way! My husband says McDonald’s- but what does he know? Carne asada fries might be my favorite way to eat them right now though.

i also have a thing for bread. its got yeast? i’m game……

i definitely get you on the stress eating. my wedding planning has put 9 lbs on my frame. not good. so now i have the stress of needing to lose it to get into my dress…..yeah…..

my weakness? you mean besides food? haha. i’ll have to say king hawaiian sweet dinner rolls. those don’t last long at the house. probably because i have this habit of eating them for dinner. lol. obviously i don’t do much to keep myself from caving.

but it warms my heart to know that my bf’s mom always makes sure there’s a pack waiting for me whenever i come to visit :-)

The best advice I can offer–ADD IN VEGGIES!!!!! Seriously! Here’s how I’ve been doing it:

–having a generous serving of either sugar snap or snow peas in my lunch–it FORCES

16.
bellethellama says:

@bellethellama: Ah, nuts. My computer decided that I was ready to post my comment when I wasn’t.

Anyway, what I was saying–eat veggies! My fiance has made them so much more palatable and here are some of my favorites:

–Fresh peas in the pod are a great addition to a lunch, because they FORCE you to eat more slowly.
–Spaghetti Squash–one of the best veggies ever. Ever! Make it the same way you make your favorite pasta recipie (be forewarned that it takes in some water when it cooks, so if you have a watery sauce, it will become a little runny) but with a fraction of the calories and a high filling factor.
–Lentils: not technically a vegetable, but an amazing protein source. Lentils are amazing, and unlike beans, don’t make you feel…ehrerm…gassy afterwards. But they also fill you up.
–Sweet potatoes: Used sparingly, baking sweet potatoes with a little olive oil, balsalmic vinegar, rosemary and thyme (added after they bake at 450 degrees or so) are a wonderful everyday substitute for fries

gaudior23 says:

Soda - pepsi exactly… No diet here.. The only way to avoid the cravings is to abstain completely for me. If I drink one - I want one the next day. I go through swearing off for a month or so and after the first day or two its not too hard. But eventually I fall off the wagon and its soo hard to get back on…

I have the horrible curse of loving sweet and salty foods. I’ll eat something sweet, then crave something salty to offset the sweetness, then crave something sweet to offset the saltiness. It’s a horrible, vicious cycle! :)

Miss Toucan says:

@Miss Jasmine: haha, me too! In college when we had buffet meals, I used to eat a whole meal, have dessert, and then go back to starchy foods. I was lucky then, because I used to swim a zillion laps a day on the swim team so I could get away with doing that. Now… not so much. ;)

Cara says:

Totally love the salty crunchy things !! French Fries, chips, and like Peng. I’m a BIG fan of cheese too…. My biggest weakness, Cheese Fries (with real shredded cheese, not like cheese sauce) YES PLEASE !!

Just don’t have a burger or sandwich with your fries, then you are ok as far as total calorie consumption. =)

I knew I was stress eating, but I had ice cream last night. Sheesh….

McDonalds McFlurries. I basically can’t drive by a McDonalds, cause I *will* cave. I also can’t walk by the local cupcakery because thye’re almost entirely made of butter but they suck me in every damn time. I’m definitely a sweet-toother.
