The Actual Hitched-Getting

May 15th, 2008 @ 4:22 pm by Mrs. Tulip

Funny that the wedding ceremony is so often a side note in the wedding-planning process. It’s easy to get caught up in menus and floral arrangements and invitation wording, and forget the part that actually gets you married!

But as it turned out (and perhaps not surprisingly), our ceremony was the most memorable and meaningful part of our day.

My father served as officiant. I ran out of time at the end of our planning process and never got to make programs, so not everyone knew our officiant’s secret identity. But a few guests mentioned that they suspected as much, from the proud way Dad looked at me….

I have a health condition that makes it difficult to stand for more than a few minutes (POTS — postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), so I was worried about making it through the ceremony. Just in case, our attendants pulled up a couple of chairs and we sat through Dad’s short speech.

In his speech, he told the story of an Ojibwa wedding tradition. According to Dad (and paraphrased badly by me), at the start of the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom paddled their canoes from opposite sides of a lake to meet in the middle. The separate shores represented the separate lives they led before, and the two families from which they came.

After the wedding ceremony, the newly married couple paddled off together side by side. Significantly, the bride did not leave her canoe to join his canoe, nor he to join hers. Because when you marry, you do not give up your individual identity, nor the family and personal heritage that came before. Rather, you join up together as partners and companions, traveling life’s journey side by side….

After the ceremony and ring exchange, it was time for the first kiss. This photo always gives me the giggles because of the way I’m grabbing Mr. T’s head. “C’mon, handsome, and give me a SMOOCH!”

And finally, my favorite moment of the day. After the smooch, my father presented us as the newly married couple. The crowd stood and applauded. And the applause was THUNDEROUS! There was hooting and whistling. It seemed to go on and on. The joy in the room was overwhelming.

This photo cracks me up too, because the expression on my face shows so exactly how I felt at the moment: “OMG, we really pulled this wedding thing off!!!”

Greatest feeling in the world, my friends.

your daddy’s story was really good. my dad’s a minister but he won’t be officiating. Did you walk up the aisle by yourself?

So sweet. Your photos are so lovely, so filled with joy.

We’ll be having chairs too as both me and my fiancé have chronic fatigue syndrome and most likely won’t make it through the ceremony standing.

Your venue is just gorgeous too. So unusual and the light is beautiful. I can’t wait to see more!

Mrs. Tulip -
Congrats! Beautiful ceremony! I love the (paraphrased) story you shared and I’m interested in using in during our wedding ceremony. Can you provide more details of the story? I’ve search the internet and have been unsuccessful.

Thanks for your comments, everyone! I must admit, that last photo makes me tear up when I look at it as well…. It was such a moment of joy.

@GetMarried4Less: Yes, I did walk up the aisle by myself. That was the one downside of asking my dad to officiate (he could have done both, but it seemed a bit “much”, especially as my parents are divorced and I grew up with my mother). I was a bit sad to let go of the tradition, but it seemed a bit silly anyway to have a parent “giving away” a 36-y-o woman. And we had our special father-daughter moment during the parent dance at the reception. Plus, of course, it was so meaningful to have him officiate!

@krkoch3: I’m so glad you asked about the story! I asked Dad yesterday, and it turns out there’s a neat story-behind-the-story. We are from northern Wisconsin, which has a large Chippewa (Ojibwa) community. And the story was told to him in college (in the late 1960s) by a friend from the Chippewa community. When Dad married my stepmother (in the late 1970s), he told her the story for the first time, and gave her a statute of a maiden in a canoe to commemorate their wedding. Awwwww,

And finally, @Peonies and Polaroids, I’m so sorry to hear that you both have chronic fatigue. I know firsthand how tough THAT can be! But wonderful that you have each other to get through it together. And I highly recommend the sitting — it felt absolutely natural, and was actually quite nice for looking at Dad and focusing on his speech.
