Clay Flower Samples

May 19th, 2008 @ 12:26 pm by Miss Pineapple

Yesterday, Mr. Pineapple and I had to work all day for Carnegie Mellon’s Commencement. After shooting several hundred photos of happy grads I was tired and grumpy. Then, I checked my e-mail and got a wonderful treat. Diane from Dk Designs Hawaii had my clay flower samples ready! She wanted to show me the colors and types of flowers she had created to get my feedback before proceeding with the actual bouquets, boutonnières and corsages.

You may remember, a few weeks back I sent her some photos of bouquets that I liked, as well as a possible color palette for inspiration and Diane totally hit the nail on the head. She gave me two different options for the large center flower, a gardenia or a peony. Which do you like better?

Here are the bridesmaid’s flower samples, the colors are slightly more saturated:

That peony is just incredible, the petals are so delicate.

Here is a shot of how the two work together:
The colors are soft and romantic. The flowers are classic and a bit rustic. I love them. I know I must sound like a spokeswoman for Diane, but I cannot think of anything I would change about them and she is a doll to work with. After the wedding, I will have them forever and that makes me very happy.

What do you think?

Gorgeous! I can’t believe they’re not real flowers!

I vote for the gardenia in the center.

Holy cow, these are amazing! And she knocked those out so quickly! I love them both, but I think I love the peony one a little bit more :) I still can’t believe those are clay. My mom frequents weddingbee.com and was ooooh-ing and aahhh-ing over her work. It’s so unique and original, I love it!

These are beyond gorgeous! I like the peony, but both are beautiful. This is such a neat idea and it’s exciting that you’ll get to keep them forever. Any chance you can give us some more specific price info?

I prefer the peony, but the gardenia’s great too!

I have to agree with others on the peony. These are absolutely beautiful. How fragile are they?

I love the peony, but if you want your bouquet to have a different flower than your bms, go with the gardenia–i swear these look so real i think i can smell them!

@Miss Tiramisu: Her prices vary depending on the type of bouquet and flower. You can e-mail her and request a specific quote or check out her etsy shop where she has smaller arrangements for sale.

@HC: From Diane’s website, “Items are susceptible to water and sun damage. Do not expose to direct sunlight or get the item wet. These flowers are made of a light-weight, air dry, polymer clay.”

So, they are not titanium, but they are certainly less fragile than real flowers…

@Mrs. Emerald: Well, they are clay, but I believe (don’t quote me) that they clay is a bit softer and more mailable after it dries than other clays. I don’t want to say for sure what would happen if I dropped it, so lets just say that I won’t… haha

fingers crossed.

I’m a sucker for gardenias and I think it stands out more amongst the roses than the peony. All the work is absolutely incredible though. What an awesome idea.

Annie says:

Wow!!! I adore the gardenia. Just different enough to stand out, and I think the smoothness balances out the ruffliness (is that a word?) of the peonies in the bms bouquets. I am impressed with her work!!

these are gorgeous. honestly, either one you go with would be incredible.

funny thing- my fi is a post doc at CMU and i was reading your post while on the phone with him….i blurt out “Oh! i forgot to tell you that Ms. Pineapple works at CMU too!”

he’s like…”Whuuut?”

me: “Nevermind.”

i’ve only JUST got him to understand the concept of “wedding boards” so trying to explain that all the “main characters” are named after fruits, vegetables, or bugs would be a bit of a stretch at this point…lol

I like them both. My flowers for my hair trial from Diane arrived over the weekend as well. (Boquet and Bout for wedding to follow) If anyone has a chance to get their flowers done by her, I would highly encourage it.

For anyone who was wondering about the weight, no worries. They are light and I my cymbidiums for my hair are lighter than trying to put a car key in my hair!

Jessica says:

My vote for the peony too! They seem so soft and romantic to me! :)

32.
Kat says:

Those are absolutely gorgeous! I’d say to go for the peony

Angela says:

…peony. WOW~

Miss Hibiscus says:

Peony is the way to go.

The clay can be dropped and won’t break, I had mine made by another instructor,
(who is also on etsy now, http://www.petalbypetal.etsy.com). They will only get ruined if you crush them or get water on them. Mine have lasted over a year now.
